What is his masterpiece and why is itMagnolia?
Inherent Vice just because the source material is so great,
It's impossible to say what is "his" masterpiece, considering all his films are incredibly derivative, consciously ripping off other "masterpieces". He changes style like he changes shirts. And when he makes something more personal, they fell like comfy small movies but certainly not masterpieces.
magnolia is flat out shit though, even pta has said he was unhappy with it, has made jokes about it, and said there were things he'd do differently. even david wallace who tuaght him english in college dirted it, kek
There Will be Blood is his masterpiece, followed by The Master.

Agreed, it's like a dream come true as a pynchon fan, and the movie is just beautiful
boogie nights is incredible
magnolia is ambitious, and still very good, but it's a bit of a mess

He said on Maron it was too long. Other than that, he still regards it as an intensely personal film about his fathers death that he could not write or direct today.
>Following the film's release, Anderson said: "I really feel... That Magnolia is, for better or worse, the best movie I'll ever make."
It's Boogie Nights.
The Master is his most overrated.
