Opie was a baby. No one wanted to shit on him or ignore him hecause he'd take it personally and simply not come to work on the pretense of a family emergency. For the sake of the show they let him steer the ship. Jimmy could have been booted off the show if Opie complained that he was screwing up the dynamic so Jimmy had to be extra nice. Opie would interject with fake stories or go to the phones even when the other guys where on a roll. The way he kills the Wesley Snipes in jail conversation is painfull. The made up jury duty story where he grills the prosecutor or all the times he pretends he grew up poor just pisses me off. Opie should never have been behind a mic, he should have been a program director but his ego wanted more.

Not him, but I always thought the Nopie shows were fine, Ant and Jim did just fine and there was always a significant decrease of jokes being stepped on.

Don't get me wrong - Opie wasn't a bad producer/conductor/whatever you want to call him(just bad at shutting up and realizing his limitations in the comedy aspect), but Ant and Jim weren't any worse either far as I remember.
