I think of SS joker as joker during the off-season, when Batman's off busy with other shit. Since he's not always plotting to take on batman, he's running the criminal underworld, probably making money for weapons and equipment to use on batman. His penthouse is probably his fuck pad for Harley.

Hopefully when he tangos with the bat he'll be a bit different. Hair all disheveled, maybe dressed down to just the purple coat and something practical. Not all that lavish shit.

While Joker has been depicted as a gangster before in comics, having Leto shown to be a literally crime lord in this movie doesnt really fit the characters personality. Nightclubs, making arms deals, thats more Penguin's or Black Mask's shtick. All Joker cares about is fucking with Gotham, and more importantly, Batman. He's self-dubbed the clown prince of crime not because he runs the largest criminal organization in Gotham, but because hes done every illegal thing imaginable and takes what he wants when the mood/need arises. Joker isnt a crime boss, hes a twisted performer, and thats what feels wrong about this take for me. Also Joker going out of his way to retrieve Harley is bullshit. Harley is supposed to be a tragic tale of what some will do for what they think is love, and Joker only sees her as an ongoing gag

It was easier to notice that Joker isn't happy about loving HQ since it makes him vulnerable. Too bad they didn't film a Red Hood flashback.
