Literally one of the worst biblical movies I have ever fucking seen.
Mel Gibson is a childish director.
Instead of keeping it a down to earth solid experience, he decided to add in this heavy handed and extremely cheesy symbolism.

The only actual value the movie even has a hope of providing is in the shock factor of the gore, but even that is shit.

that's the entire point of the crucifixion, are you not aware of the lore of christianity? jesus takes on the sin of humanity and is tortured physically on earth and spiritually after he dies before he resurrects in 3 days. these actions absolves humanity of original sin if you believe in him and his message as the son of god etc etc.
it's not supposed to be pleasant.

It is a modern "passion play" explicitly made to garner sympathy dollers from Christians in the most gore-infested way possible. This movie doesn't deserve a nuanced criticism, it is literally a Christian propaganda film that if it had nothing to do with Jesus (meaning, if you took the religious guilt out of it) it would be a Middle-Eastern torture porn about a religious nut.
The whole thing was a marketing ploy targeting Christians and exploiting them. Fuck off. Not many modern films are actually propaganda...this one is.
