Ridley Scott is a horrible filmmaker for everything but aesthetic/cinematographic/costume reasons.

Commodus wasn't a particularly horrible person, he just wasn't good enough to be Emperor of Rome, there was a reason hereditary inheritance fell out of favor in comparison to adoption of a suitable heir, Rome was a massive complex being and needed a certain kind of ruler to remain feasible as an administrative unit.

Ridley Scott or whoever wrote the screenplay did half-assed research and then shit all over established, viable history with nonsensical characters and dialogue.
