That makes no sense. There was reason enough for the Federation to declare war on the bugs. They have been attacking colonies well before the meteor strike.

No they hadn't. We only hear about the Mormon slaughter after the rock strike, they had been specifically warned not to go into that area either.

Depends if you really like the book or not. Verhoeven really took an older script about young nazi kids in 1930's germany finding themselves and dealing with an uncertain future and transplanted that idea into a book he found depressing.
To be honest I think the book and film have their own merits and I'd rather they go for a book retelling then do the satire terribly like the Robocop remake

>>
The reason why the critics bashed this movie was because it appealed to male teenagers and young men.

It is a well made movie don't matter how you slice it, the special effects still hold to this day and the battle scenes are awe inspiring.
>>
>>79485403
I still can´t believe how good it all looks.

most have something to do with the fact that the aliens all have very basic designs that seem believable and because it has a good mixture of probs and cgi

>>
>>79485403
The special effects were all around pretty great, but I can't help but feel that ship models would've been a way better choice. I guess it would've been hard to capture the sheer scope of the fleet?

More nighttime battles would've been great too. Still impressed that the visuals don't look like ass in stark desert light.

The Bugs were definitely goaded into a fight by the Federation and war's been going for ages, the "Mormon colonists" are in a Feddie military outpost. Also there's a defense grid full of ships and conveniently they missed the bug meteor.

Also all the adults are scarred and injured horrifically, implying the whole previous gen's been fighting, and the law itself demands military service for the right to even procreate and tons of other important goals.

The Federation saw an enemy, made them mad, and threw troops into ground combat to keep their regime going.

>it's another 'lel wasn't this such great satire of fascist propaganda?' thread

Reminder that 99.9% of wartime propaganda during the second world war was capitalist and communist. Hitler's speeches are heavily labelled propaganda because if you listen to/read them with a mind that is not already made up, you will find they make logical sense, and are in fact not propaganda.

Also, Verhoeven is a closet Nazi, so the propaganda/satire angle is as retarded as the commies/Jews who devised it.

"Ethno-national bonds are essential for the proper functioning of a worthwhile high-trust society/nation-state, and should be defended at all costs no matter what the odds" isn't propaganda, it is simple truth, which is why it is going to come around again and again until either it catches or everyone is bred down to be logically retarded, which is what the "rootless international clique" are trying to do.

Capitalist propaganda makes emotional pleas, communist propaganda uses materialistic/moral pleas, they are not the same.

The average military man doesn't fight in a war.

Heinlein glorifies war and idiots gobble up Starship Troopers thinking it justifies their poor life decisions and then seriously advocate that in order to vote you should have to serve in the military. Thankfully it easily outs them as morons so you can disregard everything else the retarded welfare queens have to say.
>>

Yup, fascism is great and works.
>>
>>79489319
>being this edgy
wew lad. within the past 16 years in the US, the average military man has been deployed to a combat theater. Heinlein doesn't glorify war but more so describes the inner workings of the military machine and one man's journey from civilian to soldier in this utopic society. IIRC, in the book you didn't have to serve in the military to vote but had to perform some sort of federal or civic service.

There's also the argument that having leaders and politicians who have never served a day in their life as a soldier running the military and making sweeping decisions regarding all servicemembers isn't the wisest option.

War is inherently bad for humans because PTSD and other mental health problems caused by it.

Additionally, killing is a sin but the state justifies it, so soldiers have to deal with moral and ethical contradictions, damaging their brains further.

A militaristic society perpetuates the hurting of its own people. It's evil. War should be avoided at all costs and never glorified or celebrated. Soldiers are victims and should be treated as such.

sin is something defined by a religious book, which should not be relevant to modern law. however, what some consider to be sin will happen to overlap with the law a lot. but if you're judging an act whether or not it is defined as a sin, you're gonna have a bad time.
>>
>>79489571
No, I'm not making a straw man. Saddam Hussein posed no threat to the American people. It was a war for oil plain and simple.

Neither was Afghanistan self defense. If anything it was retaliation, but even then it doesn't really make sense seeing as all of your hijackers from the September 11th attacks were from Saudi Arabia.

War is bad. Look at all the damaged veterans that have come back, the instability in the Middle East, and corruption and bribery involved in the wars. The two wars in the Middle East have solved nothing.

Soldiers are welfare queens by and large. Seeking massive benefits for doing a job. I work in a dangerous field and industry and I don't get a killer rate on a mortgage, free education, and any of the normal benefits that many military men demand for sitting in offices and polishing floors.

The military does jerk it to Heinlein to justify their service seeing as it is often required reading material for officers. Your argument is weak shit, compadre.

Former soldier here. You're right in that a lot of poorly educated lower class people join strictly for the bennies. But if you look at the starting salary of an private, it equals out, especially if you take into consideration that some of them will be wounded or gain some sort of mental condition due to service.

You chose to work in a dangerous field knowing the risks and rewards, I don't thin you can fault other people for what you have or don't have.

And Starship Troopers is on the USMC reading list, which is recommended, not required.

Anyone who clings to the historically untrue and thoroughly immoral doctrine that violence never settles anything I would advise to conjure up the ghosts of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington and let them debate it. The ghost of Hitler could referee and the jury might well be the Dodo, the Great Auk, and the Passenger Pigeon. Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and their freedoms.

You post is filled with ignorance.

First of all, Japan wasn't just nuked. There had been a MASSIVE fire bombing campaign that has destroyed most of the major cities in the country. Hiroshima and Nagasaki weren't really unprecedented in the level of destruction, it was just that it was done with a single bomb. Both cities could have just been bombed the normal way and the level of destruction would have been similar. Further more, Japan had offered surrenders before the nukes, it was just that America didn't accept the terms.

Secondly, Japan didn't really need to be changed culturally after WW2, only politically. Japan had been adopting western values and ideas for decades following the 1868 Meiji restoration. Japan had modeled itself around countries like pre-WW1 Germany, basically a scientific, modern, industrialized military dictatorship with a largely decorative emperor. This had turned the country into a juggernaught as most other countries in the region still clung to traditional forms of society.
