I know what's coming later, but that's not what I'm referring to. In the episode the only reason he stays on Eros is cause they need a finger on the trigger to keep the bomb from going off. It made for a better character moment the way it was done in book.

>>79479209
To keep anything from inside of Eros from crawling out and trying to make a last ditch escape on it's trip sunward while also preventing anyone from landing and trying to get their hands on protomolecule.
>>
>>79479268
is that how the belters always speak in the books?

To prevent entry as it entered the sun.

Very good.

as if she a main - Yes and no, and it hard to explain. She is the character that 1 1/2 seasons of plat have been about, but she mostly shows up in flashbacks and security cams and so on.

>>79480725
Welcome back. Seems like the main big VFX for this ep was the little ships that guided the Mormon ship out of the dock, which confused me at first. I thought maybe the Mormon ship didn't have engines of its own. But that makes sense I guess to have tug ships like that. It reminded me of the prison break scene in Guardians of the Galaxy.

This ep was heavy on CGI. I have a quibble with building a giant metal ship in the middle of nowhere in space, makes no sense to me. Seems like you would build it in orbit of a planet with the resources to construct it.
>>
>>79480896

it isn't that there isn't other religions but that they're the ones trying to leave to get outside of the sol system and basically humanity being stuck in one system is dangerous, so the idea to setup on a paradise world is kind of like how they went out west to setup away from civilization.

Kind of a similar idea.

I know, I've read the books but the missles the opa stole, the ship, the colony, none of it really kills him, him deciding to join julie is what 'kills' him. or you know..not really but yeah.

"Hey, kid."
>>
>>79481432
They wanna leave because of human birth restrictions on earth, or at least that's part of it.

Birth restrictions are also why Holden has 7 parents or whatever, children and property are expensive on earth so communal families are more common. The birth restrictions also played a role in Amos' life but I don't think they've covered his backstory yet.
>>
>>79481487
[spoilers] I hope the next book really advances the alien plot some more and Miller returns as their default way of communicating with Holden. I know he can't show up all over cause Holden got the bit of proto molecule off his ship but maybe he goes back inside the alien station or activates some alien ruins [/spoiler]
>>
>>79481516
Mormons want to leave for a few reasons.

1. Have more kids
2. Mormons like to be Pioneers, and being the first to Mars or first to the next system would be awesome to most Mormons
3. Mormons get shat on constantly, and we have left places all the time only to have non mormons come and say "well you are with us again"

Also, this episode was noteworthy as Holden wasn't punch-able.
>>
>>79481424
Costs too much to lift the materials out of a gravity well. Ergo it's cheaper to build the big ships near a very metal-heavy asteroid or two. I'd imagine the Tycho is located close to some of the largest rocks in the asteroid belt.

most resources are in the belt though mate.

central concept of the show is that earth exploits the mineral wealth of the belt by controlling their access to food/water/air.
>>
>>79481424
Gravity is a bitch. For example, any lunar colony of any size will require water shipments. It will be cheaper to ship water from Ceres then earth. Same with Ceres to mars. That why in the series Ceres water had been stripped away for other colonies and Ceres depended on water shippers from Saturn to supply water.

Tycho is known for doing crazy feats of tech - they "spun up" Eros and Ceres after they had been mined out so people could live there easily, and then started to build the Nauvoo before they ripped off the Mormons.

>For example, any lunar colony of any size will require water shipments.
Doesn't make sense, tons of water on the moon
>It will be cheaper to ship water from Ceres then earth
Garbage
Earth -> Moon is a short trip, meaning you'll be able to do it hundreds of times in the space of one Ceres -> Moon run
Earth -> Moon is not much less delta-v than Ceres -> Moon anyways
Going back from the Moon to Earth is also way way less delta-v

Overall round trip 2 orders of magnitude faster, less delta-v needed

The idea that there will be some shortage of water anywhere people settle is madness, ESPECIALLY if you are no longer splitting water for your hydrogen & oxygen to fuel your ships....
>>
>>79484731
>Earth -> Moon is not much less delta-v than Ceres -> Moon anyways
Bullshit. Escaping Earth's gravity well is far more expensive.
>>
>>79483793
Except the boring af filler s02e01. WHat were they thinking? They killed the ratings.
>>
>>79484784
What do you believe "expensive" is supposed to mean

Because the fuel cost of a 9km/s delta-v burn to escape Earth is negligible compared to letting your ship coast for years
All irrelevant anyways, noone will be shipping around bulk resources like that

If you are gonna say they use a magic propulsion technique, then launching from Earths surface will be even more trivial
>>
>>79484831
>Because the fuel cost of a 9km/s delta-v burn to escape Earth is negligible compared to letting your ship coast for years
Strawman. Shipments take weeks not years.
You're the only one who has decided that time is the most important factor.

Easy.
>>
>>79484862
lol
If you can fly from Ceres to the Moon in weeks burning HUNDREDS of km/s delta-v, then launching from earth is nothing

There is no magic cost in "escaping Earths gravity"
It is just a question of delta-v & thrust

Well, they do. The Epstein Drive is at the very, very edge of what is even remotely plausible scientifically but it also doesn't work in atmo.

The Nauvoo is being built out at Tycho Station because it's the only place in the system willing to get involved in a project that ambitious any way. Everyone else was like "Haha, generation ship so you guys can go to live around another star. Fucking nope, can't be done."

Whereas Tycho was like "Interesting. Go on..." and then figured out how to do it.

Are mormons fucked? Is there ship going into the sun?
>>
>>79488014

Nauvoo is going to keep burning into an orbit. Read on if you want to be spoiled. Mormons are pissed about it but nothing much develops on that point. However, the OPA salvage the vessel and turn it into the system's biggest, but not best, warship.
>>
>>79488014
No I don't think so, it wouldn't make sense for the trajectory of the ship to send it into the sun. Plus they can just turn around since the ship is fine. I have a feeling the Martians or someone is gonna blow it up soon though.

Mormons are the most enthusiastic proselytizers of all religions. I live in Asia and see those creepy white shirt fuckers from utah all the time.

They would definitely be the ones to try and convert space aliens or whatever.
>>
>>79488106

If something's not on an extra-solar trajectory with enough speed it will eventually settle into some kind of orbit around the sun.

>>79488053

Ship was running on autopilot and burning way harder than it was ever designed to so they could get it to Eros fast enough that nobody would be able to stop it and it could knock Eros into the sun. It's gonna keep going on that vector until the fuel tanks run dry.

Granted on both points the TV version hasn't said much about it because it's got a show, don't tell philosophy.

Mormons not shown as being evil is a nice respite from the usual. Also, many Mormons are science fiction fans, so it a good idea when writing a book to be nice to Mormons.

Also, I will go on the record, not all Mormon's are nice. Orson Scott card is a asshole.

>>
>>79489383

It was never going to be the breakout show that BSG was, they committed first by building an awesome mini series that acted as one long pilot.

Same reason they didn't go with Blood and Chrone.

They tested the waters first. I love Miller but in order to have a strong show you either need a hook or a strong cast and besides Jane and some guest actors..

Cast are newbies and not strong at all and they were never going to elevate the material.

at least Moore understood you need a lot of fucking cheese cake and fan servicy shit and he just built that right into the fabric of the show by putting tons of women everywhere.
>>
>>79489436
>>79489449

Just hoping for a 3rd season at this point. The Bad news is that only about 700k people watch it. Which is not much for it cost.

The good part is the 700k are the types that Ad people want to get to, so they can charge more for ads then the number would indicate, and it gives them tons of buzz unlike some of there other shows like Dark Matter.
>>
>>79489383

None of their sci-fi shows have had really great ratings but they keep doubling down on them. My guess is that one of the top-level suits has decided to rebuild it as an actual sci-fi network and is giving shows like Dark Matter, Killjoys, and this multiple seasons to work towards that goal. How long they'll continue is anyone's guess though.

>>79489449

Shoreh Agadashloo is fucking badass (especially now that she's allowed to swear properly) and the guy playing Fred has been in a few other things, usually as a heavy similar to the one he's playing. Half of the Roci crew is also awesome but unfortunately that half is Amos and Tex, and they're the supporting act for John Snow and Naomi so... welp. I honestly think they're going to keep Miller around to avoid their book fate and that's why they introduced Adam Jensen last season.
>>
>>79489627
To be fair, if they keep miller around I would be totally okay with it. The Show will be much weaker without him and bobbie actress is weak
>>
>>79489627

His entire charachter is a noir death wish, it wouldn't make sense for him to live like that and if you read the books, they might do something with his 'new' self but the old one is as good as Miller time.

and we're going to have to agree to disagree, the old woman, bobbi are much weaker than their book counterparts and rest of cast is one dimensional.

only person that has really filled their roles more for me is Tex and naomi and that isn't enough.

Shoreh is literally majority of book 2 along with bobbi and either they just don't know how to write political intrigue and make it interesting since what colors your viewpoint of the intrigue is the internal dialogue, I just don't see how they can make it better than book.
>>
>>79489675

With Bobbie they basically had to decide whether to get a ~6-foot Pacific Islander woman or someone who can act. I seriously don't think there's a Pacific Islander actress alive who's like six and a half feet tall, massively jacked, and equipped with DDs like book!Bobbie so they did they best they could. The actress playing her is actually an IRL boxer and has fought professionally so she may be able to bring it if given time to develop- Tricia Helfer wasn't that great at first either but in the end could hold her own with EJO, after all.

On the other hand she might turn out to be Gina Carano-tier.
>>
>>79489812

They got helfer because she knew how to be a sexy woman by instinct and even director is like, I can teach you how to act, you just be you.

That can be engaging because a woman that knows how to do that can hold an audience. Bobbi's actress is none of that, her internal dialogue was a good chunk of her view point..and now they're going to not only need her to speak but..shit did you even watch her scenes so far?

that is doa already.
>>
I know nothing about Mormons, what's their deal with space?
Is it like scientology where god is an Ayylmao that came on earth with spaceships and created us?
>>
>>79489863

Yeah, so far Bobbie's been shit and the training sequence was fucking retarded. The armour wrestling shit too, Frankie is nowhere near ripped enough for that to be even vaguely believable. But eh, she hasn't had much to do so far and might still develop. Gonna be shit if she can't get it together for when she works with Shoreh though.

>>79489866

The original writer of BSG was a mormon, BSG story has always been mormon, and allegorical, and R.D Moore = mormon.

Which is why religion is a prevalent theme from the very beginning, people just didn't notice because space ships and hot chicks and gaius being gaius.

The entire story of BSG is allegorical, and makes complete sense. Strangely a lot of S.F writers are mormons, since they can wed political philosophy, allegorical/metaphoric settings with their past and ideas. A lot of writers are either shitting on mormonism or enabling depending on the one. Modesitt Jr is one of my favorite authors for theistic breakdown.

Mormons do not have "Space Jesus".

(warning - Mormon theology incoming)

Mormons do not believe in the Trinity like most Christians do. They think that there is God, Jesus, and the holy ghost who are separate beings united in purpose.

Mormons believe that everyone is a literal child of god spiritually, and that the heavily father at one time was much like us, and after living a life became God. Thus Mormons think that we as humans come to earth, live our lives to grow, and then after death return and the 2nd coming and so on. So it not "Space Jesus" but our spritual father came from another world. (Mormons use the term Kolob for that world as a placeholder.) So it not space Jesus, but Space Elohim.

>>79490014
>>79490116
>>79490145
BSG has a LOT of mormon elements - the orignal series was choke full of it, and the new one still had a lot of carry over.

The New BSG had some greek stuff as padding to make it less heavy handed, but everything from veil experiences at the temple, What happened to starbuck, that the five didn't remember their previous lives, that without death there is a limit to spiritual growth and so on is all Mormonism. Let alone stuff like the Quorum of the 12 , kobol/Kolab and so on.

Just as a note, RD Moore is not a Mormon, you are thinking of the producer of the first version.

And yes, there are a LOT of Mormon writers in SF

The show itself is okay. Nothing more, maybe a bit less. It's your typical SyFy channel tale where they were given a golden goose on a platter, and then smeared it all over with shit.

The book series itself? Fucking incredible, and one of the most enjoyable things I've read in years, but the show diverges so goddamn hard from it, and in ways that make zero sense at all, that I can't stand to watch it.

>>
>>79492874

>>
>>79492762
If you mean elaborate on the shows failings, here's a few from just S1E1 alone:

-The entire Scopuli start? Totally fucked. In the book, the Captain wants to avoid going near it, but Holden tells the crew they can't do it. It's one of the major early things that establishes him as a highly moral character.
-The guy on Ceres that Miller questions about the filters? In the book, that's Miller telling a story about a guy who didn't do the filters right. He was tossed out of an airlock, because you just don't let people fuck with your air/water/food in the belt. In the SHOW? Miller takes a fucking BRIBE from him, going directly against the entire idea that it was trying to establish with that scene.
-The pointless scene of the guy getting his arm crushed at the beginning, which was done in the background in the book
-There are some minor errors with Julie at the beginning, but those aren't generally TOO bad, but if you've read the book it's mildly irritating
-The ENTIRE fucking scene with the military engagement and them evading the missiles didn't happen at all. It fucks up the explanation INCREDIBLY hard, and in the book, it's part of the start of establishing a lot of the rules of how shit works in space. In the show, it's just some shitty generic, poorly done action sequence.

On it's own, as a completely unrelated standalone, the show is alright. It's nothing particularly special, but it doesn't fuck up too hard. It's entertaining enough to be acceptable.

As something related to the Expanse series? It's... irritating. It tries in some ways, but then it fucks up collosally in others, and it does it in a way that if you know what's actually going on, it's this giant, glaring fucking sign of "Dude, what the FUCK"

Here, this is the first two books and a good reader that'll let you access them. See for yourself, don't just take my word for it.

>Like the atmosphere, but the third book has some sloppily edited parts. Also they could cut back on imitating GURM.

The third book was the weakest for sure. 2nd was my favorite. I think 4 will be cool on TV though... if I'm remembering it correctly. 4 is the one set mostly on the alien planet right? its like a wild west type story almost + lots of Miller time
>>
>>79494822
I think you are projecting the exaggerated "waifu" culture of 4chan onto him.

I think the only "love" he has for her is for the kind of person that lives for something. Cheng is Miller's role model now. She inspired him to live and possibly die for the Belt.

How many episodes this season? I wonder if they're gonna try and cover all of book 1/2. I feel like there's not enough time...

Wikipedia says: A 13-episode second season premiered on February 1, 2017.

I meant this guy (though perhaps he only seems like that because the others are ugly)

You didn't like Miller at least in the 2nd half?

>>79496359

I really like that even if he's fucked in the head, even he's not as fucked in the head as magnetically massaged brain guy.
>>
>>79496496
He kind of grew on me in the last 2 eps of S1 but I only started liking him this season.

I've never read the books, but I am a heavily disabled bloke who still works in the UK.

If you basically imagine a man with dyspraxia, dyslexia, dyscalcula and dysgraphia, ADHD, aspergers and autism.

Combine High function with aspie rage, a moral compass but a high need for an external guide and you have Amos.

Originally I took one look at the guy and thought he was a shameless rip of Tyrol from BSG - as I watched the series and then listened to the audiobooks, Amos is one of the few characters who will carry the series.

Also, Miller will /always/ be our guy, even if he ends up becoming fucking weird bullshit protomolecule gate bullshit with his waifu
>>
>>79485236
Also, the book is gay.

I hate almost everyone in this show.
Why are the martian squad guys such shitheads?
What's up with the awful hair cuts?
Why is everyone so ugly?
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THE LINES OF THE MARTIAN SHITHEADS IT SEEMS LIKE A TEENAGER'S DRAMA.
Captain of the ship can't act to save his life god damn.

They messed up mars.
Belters have weird styles, it's there to stress that they have their own distinct culture.
I'd fug Miller desu don't know what you're talking about.
Again they messed up mars.
He's boring in the book too, the other characters are the interesting ones he's really just "the good guy" that's all there is to him.
>>
This seems too minority focused for my taste.
>>
>>79499756
yes, it is, if minority means audience with higher than average IQ
>>
>>79499610

Dude.

The Martians are space Isreal - 9 out of 10 of their intelligence operatives stare at the writing on the wall - the 10th guy dropped the ball.

As for Holden?

They hired the guy who could most look like Jon Snow on their budget. Plain and fucking Simple.
>>
>>79499919
I have no idea what you mean by the martian thing but their lines seem like straight out of the 100 show or vampire diaries or some shit like that.
>>
>>79500012

Okay, gonna fill in the gaps for you.

The Martians are space Israel - so high tech but low population.

Modern Israel uses the Mossad for their intelligence ops - they train 9 out of 10 of their agents to see the "writing on the wall" and act on that - the 10th guy is the one trained to think "fuck that shit" and think of off-the-wall /x/ level shit.

Now imagine that dude dropped the ball and their shitty arse half braindead Marines have been sent in to fix the shit oh Pheobe.

That is basically where Mars stands now - Hence why their crews/dialogues/orders are so fucking stupid
>>
>>79499653
>Syfy can't really cancel it.
Why?
>>
>>79499032
Do we know how much netflix pays for distribution rights? Maybe that call fill in the gap.
>>
>>79500230
Pretty sure syfy is paying to air the show in the US Alcon is the one that's actually funding the show
>>
>>79495595

>his last line wasn't a really long and drawn out..

"I didnnnntt asskkkk forrrr thisssss!" as protomolecule whisked him into the sky.
>>
>>79494794

>anyone before miller, ever.

dawes is a political animal and corrupt to his soul.

Miller was completely right about him.
>>
>>79486758
After getting used to Reddit's shitty, too small interface, I'm gonna have to agree. It's mindblowing to be able to discuss things on the Internet with people who actually want to enjoy things and aren't just trying to be tryhard edgy contrarians 24/7.
>>
>>79500842
Then, why are you still here?
Go home.
>>
>>79478079
so the plotline is

>everyone is infected with the space techno alien aids virus
>and the alien virus makes them see stuff
>or helps them in combat (the reason why that fag pilot couldnt deal with the combat simulation not lining up with his victory)

So the experiment colony is remotely controlling those members? Or perhaps just using them as sensors for intelligence gathering?
>>
>>79500883
Because I don't have fake Internet points to lose by shitposting on here.
>>
>>79500950

which means you don't believe your own bullshit and are a hypocrite but at least you're honest about being a piece of shit and a crossposter.

So since they keep repeating in this season how Martian muhreens are 20x better than Earther muhreens, and the OPA doesn't have professional soldiers, have they ever explained who the boarders who wiped the floor with the Martian marines on the Donager were?

The guys with the blue visors and self-healing space suits?
>>
>>79499704

>he's really just "the good guy" that's all there is to him

He's not though, all of his moralfag decisions so far have come from his totally arbitrary self righteous moral compass that only makes sense to him, and has gotten his crew into shit and people killed. He got better this episode though, let's hope he doesn't relapse

They're mercs that corporations bought and upgraded with better tech.

only people that have better tech than mars is corporations that make the shit and sell it to governments.
