being a ghost is pretty OP
He became a part of the living force.
He achieved a state of being that Darth Vader, at that time, couldn't comprehend.
What was the original plan for Obi Wan? Did they even have one or was it just random dialogue to fill some time?
He's the reason Luke was able to blow up the death star.

Mainly exposition. He exists to tell Luke (and also the audience) about the force and Darth Vader.
In the book, Obi-Wan actually lost to Vader fair and square. He didn't sacrifice himself to buy Luke time.

Couldn't he just have talked Luke through it over a radio or something?

probably the exact same as we got just not a dead ghost
He entered a higher ground of existence

Mentor who dies. His voice at the end of New Hope is a film version of a character remembering a line without just saying it out loud.
In Empire he was probably written in just because Lucas couldn't come up with another reason for Luke to find Yoda.

>His voice at the end of New Hope is a film version of a character remembering a line without just saying it out loud.
Now that's just plain fucking bullshit and here's why:
1 - Ghost Obi Wan says things to Luke in the X-wing that he had never said before
2- The tone of his voice implied he was communicating with Luke, not that Luke was having flashbacks
3 - Luke acts surprised when we hears Obi Wan's voice, implying he was hearing things, not remembering what Obi Wan had said
