It has more than enough mass to retain a thick atmosphere, it lost the bulk of it due to it's core cooling and robbing it of it's magnetic field, which allowed solar weather to strip away it's atmosphere over the course of millions of years.

Realistically, if you get Mars back to an Earth equivilent atmosphere, it would take hundreds of thousands of years for the atmosphere to deplete to a human-lethal level, something a space-faring civilisation would easily be able to counteract by topping up the atmosphere with the same techniques used to thicken it in the first place.

Realistically a Mars colony would be completely reliant on Earth. There are so many resources that they'd constantly need which they can't get there. Moreover I can see Belters being somewhat healthy if they can live in 1G in their ships but there would be serious complications to anyone living in Mars for extended period of time, let alone being born there.

Show should have used Venus instead, sky high cities there are an actual possibility as it's the most Earth-like place outside on Earth in the Solar System. Mars is just a meme.

I'm guessing it would also be cheaper to terraform Venus instead of Mars, as well. Instead of having to practically make an atmosphere and all the potential travelling costs of that, it would just be stripping away the excess atmosphere that Venus has. You might have less control over it, but you'll certainly be in a better starting position than if you're terraforming Mars.

Craft some sort of mechanic supertree that could reverse what's constantly called and has almost become a cliche at this point Venus' "runaway greenhouse effect" while you hover over the clouds monitoring it.

while on Venus you have a huge gravity well to deal with that you somehow have to remove atmo from.

Not really, they're too small, too far from the Sun, iceballs and have even less atmosphere than Mars.

Mars is easier to live on than Venus. Venus might ultimately be a better candidate for Earth 2.0 but the technology you'd need to make it habitable is harder to develop and maintain, compared to Mars where you can just drop nukes on the polar regions or chuck rocks at it to release all the frozen Co2.

You could have people walking outside on Mars with just oxygen masks within a century or two by just thickening it's atmosphere, compared to Venus where you're going to need to confine people to sealed bubbles floating in the upper atmosphere until you can stop it raining concentrated boiling acid, both of which require advanced technology and a lot of it.

Depends on budget and costumes. Blue screen still works better in higher budget (where the digital does not need to be compressed) and for color correction. Green is better for cheaper productions and if you are filming compressed.

Since Expanse is filming in uncompressed and they have some pale/blonde actors, they went with blue screens.

Anyone else drink/smoke while watching this show? I drank right along with Miller last week and it was good. When I marathoned S1 I got a little high which made it pretty disturbing especially with everyone fucking suffocating every other episode.

Greenscreen is cheaper since digital cameras have good green sensors.

Bluescreen produces a better product, but requires uncompressed digital or film and 2 f-stops more in lighting. Thus is more expensive. Blue Screen still comes off as a little darker so it doesn't quite have that digital effect most people think of with CGI with Live action.

One reason why the expanse effects look good is the fact that they are spending money on blue screens over greenscreens.

You can still get good results with green screens (For example, BSG work on TV that 15 years old still is passable) but the producers of the Expanse decided to use blue screen.

3d is easier to do in green screen, and with the hobbit, it was due to using compression on the digital film due to the fact they where in many cases merging two shots seamlessly (They had two sets, and slaved the camera's so they would match the actions so they could be added together, and thus have the set for dwarf and hobbits, and another set for human sized folks.

There's really no reason to terraform Mars - it has no magnetosphere (meaning the surface would be permanently irradiated and extremely vulnerable to solar storms, even if there was breathable air). Also, the low G would eventually create a subspieces of humans with serious immunodeficiancy problems, non-functioning eyes and a myriad of other problems.

Geosynchronous cylindrical space stations are the best way to explore Mars - you could rotate people on-off planet like roughnecks in the oil industry in order to avoid longterm damage
