They simply did the best they could in the situations they were put in. Janeway just did the worst job because the writers wrote the character into a corner. Over and over again.

I don't want to watch Evangeleon because I'm not a fan of the Japanese propensity for tragedy. They seem completely obsessed with that them over since they read Shakespeare. I mean they were already into it but once they were introduced to western literature they seem to have gotten obsessed with it.

I mean, we're obsessed with triumph and victory in north america so it's a bit of a culture shock.

I get depressed just reading about it but, I might give it a try some day. You grow up on Disney stories where triumph and prosperity are the norm? You see these Japanese stories and you're like "what the fuck is wrong with these people?"

I mean, suicide is so normal to them that there's a real forest for it. It's what inspired that forest in Mortal Kombat, quite literally. I've been to Tokyo, Osaka and Sapporo among small towns and I just don't get it. The whole "you have to be born Japanese" thing might have something to it.

Well eva is very much a show about depression, by and for people who've struggled with it. but, i never felt it was just trying to make the audience feel bad or leave them with negative feelings just be memorable. If anything I thought it ended on an incredibly resonating positive note, but your mileage may vary.

Nadia is by most of the same team but it's out and out youth adventure, so that might be worth checking out too

On it's own it'd be a very good monster of the week show, because unlike other shows, you don't just pull spiral power out of your ass and wallop the aliens. You have to think, because some are defeated by dancing, others, you can't even use robots, some just let you kill them, and whatever, each week is a new puzzle to solve. But even if you took all that out, it'd still be the best anime of all time based on character drama, the awesome fights are just icing on the cake.

Like breaking bad. The episodes where he concocts crazy schemes are great but the ones with Shakespeare drama are what make it high art.
