Do Americans really bring their laptop to lectures, isn't it overkill? All you need is a pen and some paper to take notes.
>>
>>79446881
yeah but nobody pays attention in lecture
>>
>>79446768
Please tell me they were forced to use those "machines".
>>
>>79446881

Yeah but they can't browse facebook with just pen and paper.
>>
>>79446881
american students are the dumbest people on the planet
>>
>>79446768
>apple

Wow, lots of jewcock swallowing went on in that room.
>>
Why all the apple computers?

They are over priced for what they do and surely there is no fashion statement to be made when EVERYONE has one. Coming in with something alternative and then autistically boasting about its superior specs and how Apple Man was a huge unlikable faggot might actually make you the cool guy.
>>
>>79446881

The majority of kids on laptops during lecture aren't even following the professor. In my classes at least half of the people on laptops are either or social media or doing work for other classes.
>>
>>79446768

>All those macs

Gee, i wonder why they are americucks
>>
>>79446881
Sometimes when the jew bitch teacher required me to bring the latest edition of the 300 dollar textbook to class I'll pirate the last edition of the ebook and bring my laptop to class because fuck jews and fuck professors who contribute to the textbook system. Most of the time we never needed it in class. Fuck college. my fucking boomer dad payed for my tuition before I was even born. I know I shouldn't complain but I would have rather been a plumber or electrician I can't deal with these constant deadlines.
>>
>>79446881
Depends on the subject, some really help to have a laptop with. I always brought mine to my project management class since I wrote copious notes, just paragraphs and paragraphs every lecture and my hands would cramp if I did it by hand while it's effortless on a computer. And of course any computer programming or CAD course would be better with a laptop. For anything math heavy though it's a bit dumb.

macbooks are god tier.
PC manufacturers have VERY recently nearly reached 80% in manufacturing quality. I've seen laptop after laptop fail in the time my faithful 8 year old macbook pushed on and was still running photoshop and illustrator while watching videos. I only updated because i wanted to. The trackpad has never been matched and the lack of any bothersome elements in the OS make it god tier in terms of distraction-less and glitchless operating. After all of that I STILL have windows installed for various non-compatible programs.
>>
>>79447081
Yeah but then you have to listen to the lecture twice. My shit professors can't even fill out the hour class period with enough relevant information so they just ramble about stupid shit mostly.
>>
>>79447081
>implying all professors let you do audio recordings
>implying that's not a waste of time as most of that lecture isn't worth listening to twice
>implying taking good notes during class isn't far more time efficient for studying
>implying that won't make visual segments more or less pointless
>>
>>79447054

Depends on the class.

While I was taking English and Psychology requirements for my campus (every one has to pass these courses to graduate regardless of major) I remember filling up an entire 1 subject notebook nearly full during a semester.

I agree that endless paragraphs wouldn't the best thing for chem or math courses. Hell I'm predominantly writing chemical structures during my organic chem class.

Isn't the point of writing notes to plant the idea firmly into your memory? The physical act and the need to transcribe in your own words makes learning the topic easier. Maybe handwriting notes -then typing them up- would be the best for actually getting the most out of your stupidly expensive university experience.
>>

Macbooks are the best laptops.
It has nice built in features that helps you type fast as shit.
>>
>>79447439

Film school isn't about becoming a director there are shitloads of jobs in the media industry and a good program will teach you at least the basics of most of them
>>
>>79447917
>Isn't the point of writing notes to plant the idea firmly into your memory?

Actually I think there's no difference between typing and writing when it comes to note taking and memory. The reason why those who typed did shittier in the study is that they kept using their laptops to look up shit and distract themselves from the lecture. Despite looking up things related to the material, the kind of "switching" the brain does from listening to researching just distracts it and impedes learning.
>>

>>79446938

As someone who had had to work a job where I fixed people's laptops and listened to them bitch and moan about how awful their computers perform when they have web browser toolbars 10 deep and somehow manage to fill their computers up with malware and bullshit I am extremely grateful for apple computers. They are the computer equivalent of bowling with the bumpers on and I recommend them for anyone who isn't interested in putting in just a basic amount of effort to learn their computers systems and how to keep them running.

They are overpriced, but they are simple to use, reasonably well made, have direct support from Apple, and they aren't as easy to load up with malware by clicking on everything online as your average windows computer.

I have a dell myself, but I know wtf I'm doing, I would never in a million years let my parents use something other than an apple.

youve never used a Mac. Believe me I was same. Fact is, Windows laptops are clunky as fuck to type or use a trackpad.

Writing notes on physical paper is objectively better for memorization than typing on a laptop. People who use their laptops for notetaking are morons. Most people who bring their laptops are just doing something else and not actually paying attention.
>>

why the fuck does it have to be a mac? these are adults, but they're still acting like middle-schoolers who need the newest shoes to fit in. what makes me sad is that there are probably a dozen of students who couldn't afford it, or even their tuition but bought one anyway so as to not be looks at weird.

I agree that there's only so much you can learn from film school, and that most of what you gain is intuition to benefit the talent you already have. You can't teach a talent for film.

However, I have learned a huge amount of what goes into making a film, as well as gained hands-on experience. Also, at least here, the school funds your film for each year (1st year is two 3-minute scenes, 2nd year is 7-minute short, 3rd is 10, 4th is 15), and the budgets are pretty generous to say the least.

The connections made are also invaluable. I am surrounded by a community of people, any one of which could get work and then recommend me.

you fund the film... the school takes your funds and lets you use equipment they have

the tens of thousands you're spending could be used to shoot a feature film that gets you a real job

when you graduate you're going to have exactly the same portfolio as your peers, the only difference will be if someone wins an award for one of their shorts

how are you going to get ahead when you're all the same?

consider that maybe, just maybe, film school is a business with a sole objective to turn a profit for its stakeholders, and after learning the basics you can go out into the big scary world yourself

this is the biggest reason to go to film school.

your career is made by your connections. I have none so I'm starting from scratch. reading books and articles and watching youtube videos are cheaper than film school, but being around people with the same interests is a real motivator and you'll get work and credits much easier and faster.

>professor actually stops for students in America
why yes :)
You have to put yourself in a mindset of an equal to him, just lacking in experience, how else are you gonna discuss and learn anything if the expert just goes on a monologue, there are supposed to be questions, comments or point out some alternatives to the methods being taught, sometimes trivial, sometimes non trivial depends on the class, or sometimes even mistakes, but yes, the professor will typically ask if there's any doubt or someone could just raise their hand. That's an average classroom in a decent uni.
That is the norm but honestly my preference is just to let him finish with his lecture and ask questions later, in writing if I could, because I would be able to formulate my problems more precisely, to ask a well defined question and even partially resolve it, also think about other students, sometimes some guy's questions could just be a waste of time to many others. This happens a lot especially in gradschool in a class where almost everyone has publications, each is an "expert" in their subfield and their questions are both difficult and distracting from the main topic.

I was able to flick through the different chapters of my notes using word with no effort whatsoever, building a contents page that took me immediately to a topic and its cases/legislation

With handwritten notes you'd have to leave space at the beginning of the book for contents, then randomly compile all kinds of writing, and it'd be on probably 500 pages instead of 250 because nobodies handwriting is as small and readable at font size 11 of a computer

Because prior to the internet you didn't have the answer at your fingertips

Do you think the Greeks would have required everyone sit around and debate if they had the internet? Socrates wouldn't fuck with anyone

Learning has changed but the businesses (college/university) has not immediately adapted because they are still turning over incredible profits. They don't need to change yet.

I've asked experts before questions of law and they can't even answer them because it's the kind of questions where you'd need to know the intentions of the authors, which can only be theorized, so I stopped trying to learn the motivations of some laws and just started focusing on learning the law and getting the answer right.

In practice nobody gives a fuck about why a law was made, and if they do question it hansard will define it, not the actual theoretical basis of the law.

So your therapy group sessions with questions and alternatives seem adequate.

>you're supposed to ask questions and interact with your prof

while that is true, to elaborate further, it is not about being friendly with the prof, it's more about problem solving skill and actually learn something actively. The most important part is not asking questions to the prof, but the questions the prof asks the class during his exposition. It's like a mini quiz, sometimes he would even stop for 5 minutes to let you figure out the next step, how to resolve a problem he posed. (I've seen this style of teaching from functional analysis to nonlinear optimization class, basically to make adjustment if the class can't follow and make sure the professor is not wasting everyone's time).

These are the most important part of attending a lecture. It will reveal a lot about your own ability and also about other guys in the class, where you stand, etc. If your class doesn't have this, then yes you can just stay at home and watch youtube videos.

Get a part time job and buy a good laptop that'll last you for the next few years.

Go ahead and name the university you attend and state your major. Let's see how hard the coursework is.

>you are expected to be able to understand shit if people simply tell you about it
well then it's clear that what you are studying isn't non trivial.

Because it's easy for most people to use.

They don't care about privacy or control over their machines. Just as long as it runs and lets em watch memes on facebook while sharing the same things over and over again with their facebook friends.

Yeah I've had some asian kid do that
>>
Am I the only one who reads the literature and listens during lectures? No computer, no pen and paper just ears.
>>
>>79458172
i did that when i "studied" media, but now in law you can't just remember all the sections and cases relevant
>>
>>79458172
I'm sure you remember what was said in the first month of class when you are preparing for the final at the end of the year.

Its Mizzou's journalism school ironically one of the better journalism schools in the country. Back around a decade ago Apple became a major sponsor for the UM system so the schools shilled the fuck out of them and students got pretty great discounts.

As long as their are bullshit electives students are forced to take that has nothing to do with their majors, there will be students fucking around on laptops not paying attention.

I'm majoring in geology, why the fuck do I need to take art classes? That's highschool shit to justify tuition prices.
>>
Psych/premed major here

During my lectures everyone seems so uninterested and I noticed a lot of people were even playing games on their laptops in front of me

If they don't pay attention then why go to the lecture?
>>
>>79457934
American universities are some of the best in the world though, its just our public education that sucks ass.
>>
>>79458251

The lectures are usually uploaded but even if they are not you always have the readings to go back to, nothing will pop up on an exam that you haven't read already.
>>
>>79458292
Often you'll be asked a question about something that was only mentioned by the lecturer for the exact purpose that it's not in the readings and you'd need to attend/listen to the lecture to know the information

Word to the wise Chrissy...

Maybe you'll like Arts so much you decide to study another degree goyim :^)

It's like you pay us for the opportunity to upsell you

One prof at university told our class people can only use macbooks if they blocked out the glowing apple.
>>
>>79458276
I did that for a chemistry course I had because the online teaching system was better than the professor. There was no attendance policy or anything, but I still showed up often enough because he didn't announce tests in emails or anything, and having a general sense of how the professor teaches is useful because you get an idea of how he's going to ask the questions on the exams, and you don't need to be paying too much attention to pick up on that. So the online shit and textbook give you the knowledge, and popping into class now and again gives you the context you're going to have to use the knowledge in.
>>
>>79458313

Never had that, lectures are optional here.
>>
>>79449863
lmao this. People forget how much the few inventors and shit carry the rest. Same with when you see faggots talking about how great the British empire and shit was, you had nothing to do with that shit.
>>
>>79458453
I had it happen this week and lecturers are optional here too. They just do it because they can.

Luckily I listen to the lectures cause they always drop exam hints, but the only reason I knew anything about that question was from the lecture. Checked my notes and textbook and not 1 sentence addressed the question.

I hope everyone in my class didn't remember or watch the lecture cause fuck em

I mean just because you're successful it doesn't mean you lose that shit. Doesn't matter how rich you get if you're ugly you're still ugly and everyone sees it/knows it.

As someone else who had to work fixing computers I can tell you that they WILL break and then you are fucked because the entire system is locked down and impossible to fix with anything but a factory reset. They do get malware and because of their reputation of never getting malware there are really very little resources available to fix it once they get infected. There isn't even a surefire way to close down non-functioning programs, even with command line, all you can do is "ask" the OS to try to close it.

Pen, paper and your brain...why do they bring the most expensive computer around then ?
Try do that shit in Brasil.
>>
>>79446881
First year I used to write down on paper my notes and attend everyday.
Second year I started bringing a laptop and fucking around half the time.
Third year I didn't attend lectures.
I passed everytime with flying colors, and I realised what I remembered of those classes was more tied to how I studied for the exam than what I did in class, exception made if something emotionnaly engaging was happening as the teacher spoke.

Tell me, why should I take the path that requires the most efforts with only marginal gains?
