Despite not being impressed with the Director, Screenwriters and ScarJo, I need my futuristic Sci-fi robot fix and GitS isn't a bad choice for adaptation, HOWEVER, let's not forget that although beautiful, well animated and full of interesting concepts and ideas, GitS is a bit overrated and esoteric.

The trailer looks good, love the cinematography and based upon the shelling sequence I've seen, this will be a first day theater trip for me.

Still the big problem this movie has is with Section 9. That organization isn't the problem, the story is fundamentally about the surrounding hackers, NGOs, and foreign influences that produce a high amount of subtle interference in Japan. It's almost undetectable sometimes, but it's there.

One big problem with posting the anime screenshots versus the live-action screenshots is the discrepancy in depth of field.

An artist has full control over how shallow or deep they want their focus to be. Whereas a cinematographer, no matter how great, is at the mercy of optics.

It doesn't matter how much you stop down your aperture. If you have a closeup shot of a subject, the background is going to be blurry unless it is within 2 feet of your subject, even at f22.

However, artists don't have these problems. They can have the most bokelicious backgrounds even when it's a landscape shot, or they can have the most in detail background during a closeup.

The only way modern cinema can replicate this is by using CG, which is a complete possibility.

However, this discrepancy is part of the reason why adaptations aren't as good visually as their anime counterpart. When we have a fight scene, everything is in full detail, from the fighters to the background. But in real life, we can only have one of those in focus at a time unless the background is completely CG.

Visually it just tries to imitate the original while adding nothing new, the totally opaque skin-suit is such a cop-out to what was used in the original. If it visually can't add anything new then it serves no purpose because the original animation still looks fantastic.
Plot changes make it into a really generic future-conspiracy plot and changes some of the fundamental elements that made The Major appealing as a character.
