Do people still really think this show is the greatest ever? Maybe it was "groundbreaking" in the late 90s when it's only competition in the TV drama stakes was shit like Law and Order and The X Files, but TV has evolved so much since then.

Compare an episode of this to an episode of something like Breaking Bad and you'll realise how dated this show is.

This is when the bait becomes too obvious. It was good up til them though.

The only things you could make a believable case for being better would be The Wire and Mad Men.

Breaking Bad was very flashy.

Sopranos in the later seasons was very matter-of-fact. Not overstated.
>>
It's funny because I was on /tv/ 10 years ago and back then people felt the same way about The Sopranos that they did about Breaking Bad, that it was lowest common denominator trash, and that Dexter was a superior show.

It's the opposite. It's about how emotionally crippled these supposed "gangsters" are and how that leads to a toxic family life.

It's the opposite of Scarface in that everything is boring and miserable.

It's a great series.

Sopranos is broader in scope for one. It's about a lot of stuff. Family, infidelity, raising children, mental illness, masculinity, nostalgia, even before the crime related aspects. The Wire is incredible, but the scope more specialized, the war on drugs.

I watched it for the first time just a couple of months ago. It's a fantastic, engrossing show. Shows what happens when you have writers that actually care about their craft and have a genuine experience with the subject material.

Breaking Bad was great while it lasted, but I dunno. Looking back it seems kind of soap opera tier at times.

One thing I do want to point out is that I fucking despise AJ with all my heart, and I hope the last scene of the show included him in it.

If breaking balls is such a big part of being a gangster, why are they always so offended whenever it happens? They all dish it out, but they can never take it.
>>
>>79438153
BB is a superbly-crafted crime drama, it just doesn't really exceed that. which is fine in its own right, but imo not enough to qualify it as one of television's supreme masterpieces.
>>
>>79438283
Breaking Bad is a thriller. I watched it live from the first season. I remember picking it up because of Hal. Anyway, it was an incredible experience to watch live. But I haven't looked back at it so fondly after you know the ending.

Video game playing basement virgins. Capeshit chugging normie plebes. It is a show that appeals to infantilized, immature and unsophisticated. Wherever those characteristics may be found. To embrace breaking bad is to reject adulthood.
>>
>>79435717
The Wire also deals with addiction, education, the working class, the government, homelessness, and the media. The Wire has an incredibly wide scope and focuses on multiple subjects.
>>
>>79438437
I was on the edge of my seat when I first watched the Mexican brothers trying to kill Isaac Schrader, but in hindsight it seems like one of the dumbest moments in television history.
>>
>>79438490
the best scene was with the gossip after Ad and Tonys car crash.
>>
>>79438571
The Wire looks society-wide, The Sopranos looks into the souls of it's characters and oddly enough ends up being more universal.
>>
>>79438573
The whole show is a series of "HYPE" moments. Either it's feeding you an epin meme scene or it's laying the groundwork as a promise of giving you an epin meme scene down the line. It's a well produced rollercoaster ride, but it has none of the character depth of the sopranos. I think it had potential in the first couple of seasons but instead of digging deep into the characters they doubled down on the crowd pleaser elements until you're watching borderline capeshit by season 5.

>>79438786

>murders and shooting are rare

I'd argue the opposite. I was surprised at the amount of scenes were someone was casually shot, beat, robbed, etc. However, I think casually is the key word in how it differs to a show like Breaking Bad where a moment of violence is often played up and becomes the focal point of an episode. In Sopranos, by contrast, it's usually just another scene filmed without any flash or show to it. It's meant to show how violence is inherent to the gangster life style and treated as if it's just a regular part of doing business, which for them it is.

Serious question. What are these opinions based on? I've seen all of The Wire and Mad Men and I don't get the infatuation. Mad Men especially. There were so many times in Mad Men that it was obvious the writers had no idea how to proceed so they just pulled shit out of their ass. The show has no fucking focus. I'm really starting to suspect people just think it's a classy show because it took place in an era that still believed in class. Haven't seen the Sopranos but I've learned my lesson not to expect anything spectacular from television anymore so I probably won't see it.

I'm not a huge fan of The Wire but The Soprano's and Mad Men have amazing characters, some of the best ever written. This is only a minor critique, but there are plenty of moments in BrBa that forego any attempt at realism, it's almost like a comic book at times (robot machine gun in the boot of a car, trauma victim missing half his face gets up and adjusts his tie).
There is nothing inherently wrong with this, however Gilligan never used these moments to provide anything greater than surface-level entertainment. There are plenty of surreal moments in a show like Twin Peaks, and to a lesser extent Mad Men and the Sopranos, however they are almost always self-aware and are actually used to further characterization or plot meaningfully.
