All of Wes Anderson's films are shot in a very stylistic way that's almost like a stage production.

Everything is similar to real life, but never attempts to mimic it. It's meant to be stilted and unrealistic.

that's why all his films are so bloodless and dull.

>why try to portray real human emotion and fail miserably (same as most directors anyway) when you can hide your ineptitude by not even trying and shifting focus towards your autistic obsession with color palettes and out of place pop songs?

I don't know why anyone would want to see a movie that doesn't even want to make its audience feel something strongly.

but why everything has to be so fucking ironic and deadpan? it's nauseating.

it makes me depressed to think that so many people don't care if something is genuine or not, as long as they can get fun out of it.
>>

Maybe just acknowledge that it's not your cup of tea and move on. There's a world of shit out there that people like and don't like for reasons you'll never grasp and plenty of stuff that you like that others don't get.

Just move on and let everyone like what they like.

not in small part thanks to people like wes anderson.

it's far from harmless entertainment.
>>

Wes Anderson is totally sincere though, are you dense or is this comment b8?
>>
>>79416278

Wes Anderson movies aren't even really that cynical, they have cynical characters, shitty dads, and all kind of horrible things happening.

But there's an earnestness to them, they're almost wholesome in a way, purely because of their presentation.

I believe that Wes Anderson's movies are genuine. It's just that they're filtered through a genuine self-hatred, as well as a need to cloak one's artistic aspirations in a comforting cocoon of irony.

Sometimes it's good to enjoy something even when you know it doesn't do justice to the infinite complexity of the human condition. It's alright to slap a chastity belt on the rabid brain-boner you have for 'honesty' and just enjoy a well-crafted film. If you can't, frustration and impotence will destroy your mind.

I can't remember though if in the movie, they ever encountered the real killer, and didn't know it was him.

Either way though it's a great scene, makes your skin crawl when it's him looking at the killer IRL, since the killer was never caught and could be watching the movie.

>he had a plain and ordinary face.

What? Everyone repeatedly thought of him as handsome.

Either way I thought the point of the killer being "ordinary" was that it went against the main characters' trend of judging people by their looks (the main guy himself's "ability" to look someone in the eye for guilt), and how they kept thinking the killer must have had a really distinct look, but at the end he turned out just to be an average joe who could be anyone.

This fucking scene

I loved this movie as a young kid, back in the early 90's

Must have watched it 20 times in one year, back then I thought it was a cool story with some young Dinosaurs that reminded me of myself and my friends, and everything worked out happily ever after in the end

Rewatched it for the first time in 20 years about a year or two ago, after this scene played I just stared out the window for 10 minutes

The charming tale of a group of young dinosaurs is actually a terrifying tale of genocide, and survival and personal loss

What does it mean for something to be genuine?

I've struggled with this question for a while, as an engineer. We make flooring now that simulates wood floors in sound, appearance, texture, and every other conceivable way. You can't even tell it apart from the real thing once its laid down. It's also safer and cheaper to manufacture. If that's the case, why use real wood at all anymore?

A few months back, I went to an airbnb in the hills of North Carolina run by these two hippy ladies. I had a moment where I looked through their strange, radical library and thought, "everything about this experience could be simulated, from the book choices (pulled from Amazon), to the architectural choices (building the house out of reclaimed wood, and with an emphasis on renewable sourcing), and even the individuals running it (would it be so hard to find two lesbians who could play such a role outside Asheville)?

The thing that made me realize it could not be a simulation was a wind chime over the mulch toilet behind the cabin. It wasn't put there for decoration. It wasn't put there for safety, really, as the couple were the only people there. As a man, my first understanding was, "as you pass it, the chime rings and people nearby know to stay away", because I saw it as a man would.

Then I dropped acid, and thought about what it would mean to a woman. And women don't negotiate the exchange of needs and wants that way. They're more subtle. The chime doesn't say, "stay away". It's a gentle, unconscious behavioral reminder to give space. It was in that moment I realized that it was the touch of a genuine individual. It had perspective. It possessed "self".

Genuineness will be a rare quality as time goes on. With each passing day, we become more able to shape the world as we see fit. Wes Anderson's movies reflect the "truth" of how humans see the world in abstraction, just as Charlie Kaufman's films reflect the "truth" of reality many of us refuse to accept.

Am I dead inside because when I see a wind chime I don't really think about it for more than 2 seconds and only as "there's a wind chime above the toilet"? I definitely don't have some epiphany about the concepts of "self" and "genuine", not even on acid like you, because I just saw neat things in my head and watched it like a movie.

Are you "an artist", is that it? Or do I lack much-needed introspection to the point where I'm as dull and hollow as my thoughts?

Nope. I was on acid which ratcheted things up 100 notches. And when I'm not, I constantly spend time analyzing things because it's how I approach life. It's a coping mechanism. If I understand things, I'm better able to deal with them. But it is a COPING mechanism, and its only recently that I've come to understand that it's not always helpful. Further, you can really take all the joy out of life when all you do is think, and not experience.

It's taken me a long time to learn how to stop the analytical part of my brain. I think people that can do that are so lucky. You're not dead inside. You just understand that analysis isn't as useful as it may seem. I envy you.

>>
no intro to "UP"?
waterworks for me everytime.

That is in here, and I'll never understand why people always rate it so highly. The rest of the movie ends up being more sad than that intro.

i'm an easy mark for emotional manipulation.

Not really. I get that it sounds the same, but it's different. It comes down to how men and women interact. Men are not conflict averse, and they tend to resolve disputes through direct interaction. Women on the other hand don't really like fighting, and have to achieve their goals in other ways (like by manipulating others).

The choice of a wind chime is specific because it's so mild that it can fade into your subconscious. A woman who hears it in the distance doesn't even think "oh shit someone's on the toilet, gotta stay away". The unconscious understands it as, "there is a noise, when I heard that noise I was on the toilet and wanted space, therefore I will avoid it". It's the difference between being told to stay away and understanding why you should without being told.

Or I coulda been whacked outta my head on acid and coming up with crazy shit, as has certainly happened before. I dunno man. It's a hell of a drug.

It's an emotional hit but it's a cheap one, the whole sequence happens in like 3 minutes.

Only thing that can make me teary eyed.

widowers really get to me. it's my opinion that men love differently than women and nothing makes me sadder than seeing a lonely looking old guy eating supper by himself.

You actually remind me a lot of someone I know who is an artist, hence the question earlier. I figured that was maybe a characteristic of the artistic mindset, questioning things heavily to a point where they almost stop making any sense in the flood of possible information.

If you're like him I'm sorry your brain is always thinking like that. He likes to talk about everything that happens in his day and overanalyze it all. He also questions concepts and theoretical situations, critiquing lots of things and liking to start lots of sentences with "Isn't it funny" or "Ever think about". If you're like him you're probably always thinking about something almost pointless and have a tough time with friends because you like to talk about these things to the point of becoming weird and making others uncomfortable.

I hope you learn to roll with the punches more, anon, though I know that's not something you learn by thinking about, it's sadly something that just kind of clicks.

>as the people who adore you stop adoring you; as they die; as they move on; as you shed them; as you shed your beauty; your youth; as the world forgets you; as you recognize your transience; as you begin to lose your characteristics one by one; as you learn there is no-one watching you, and there never was, you think only about driving - not coming from any place; not arriving any place. just driving, counting off time. now you are here, it's 7:43. now you are here, it's 7:44. now you are... gone.

Not the best in this thread, but I have always appreciated it because it's not cheap, but it totally blindsides you. In another wise good comic episode with their normal hijinx, they manage 'to sneak some real feels into it.
