had it on VHS when I was 9, saw it more than a few times. even as a kid it made me mad because I was always scared of being held back.
i know there is almost zero continuity in the series but it would have been ballsy for them not to have a happy ending. even if they retracted it the next episode, like how Homer gives up drinking for Marge, goes to the bar, sees the sad guys, and then goes on a bike ride with her. He didn't slow down on his drinking, he kept on going.
but that fucking episode "triggers" me, he DESERVED to fail. Krabappal taking pity on him means he'll continue to 5th grade and still continue his stupid bad habits. hits a nerve

4-7 are the sweetspot, there's about 60 episodes in those 3 seasons where it is a decent cartoon. before that, they try to make you feel feelings, but it's ruined because it's episodic and nothing ties together from episode to episode. after that, the writing staff did a heavy change and you might still like some jokes but the episodes aren't good
