Really looks quite good, only thing I am concerned about is the story. The major not knowing her past has never been any part of the manga or any series. Also, why is it super abnormal to have a full cyberbody in this movie's interpretation? Should be rare but not unheard of

>>79385598
You're trying too hard man

Eh, I'm pretty okay with it. I've given up on accepting this as an actual GITS movie, more like heavily inspired modern sci-fi shlock.

If the Major was like 5'6", wouldn't that make Togusa like 5'10", and also make Batou a /big guy/?

So it's confirmed they've totally shat all over the Major's character. I'm going to pretend really hard that this movie has nothing to do with GitS and maybe I can enjoy it.
>>
>>79385602
>The major not knowing her past has never been any part of the manga or any series

Probably couldn't think of a better storyline than the hackneyed "to save [his/her] future, he/she must discover their past" shit

And I suppose her being "forced" to become a cyborg makes it easier for the audience to understand why she is a cyborg
>>
>>79385598
this.

Man, they just took some of the manga's premise and put a generic cliché story into it. It feels like capeshit in manga environment. What a disgrace!

So I have only seen the movie twice.

Is everyone in the society have some cybernetics? I know that Major is full blown and one character only has a cyber brain but is there anyone that doesn't have any cybernetics?

Not everyone is a full cyborg in the GitS setting because high end cyborg bodies cost as much as an F-35.

But almost everyone has a cybernetically enhanced brain for interfacing with tech, or some low key cybernetic work on their body.
>>
>>79385735
I think most people just have their brain cybernetically adjusted, or limbs/organs/eyes etc

IIRC full prostheticisation (?) like the Major was pretty rare

Also there are regular robots in the franchise too, used for whatever you can think of.

In the manga, the major visits a contact of hers who has two high end sex robots, both of which cost as much as a Ferrari (circa 1992).

Good God Almighty. The original Ghost In the Shell is my favorite piece of moving pictures ever produced by mankind and this made me put my desk pistol up to my monitor, millimeters from actually sending a bullet through my monitor. This is fucking abhorrent and a complete bastardization of the original material.

If I could more than audibly REEEEEEEEEE I would. I don't even know where to start in my criticism of this piece of shit. The iconic naked assembly of her body. The iconic thermoctic camouflage face swipe with her hand. The most iconic battle of all anime with the spider tank. Completely bastardized. The character of The Major totally annihilated by "well we have to make her vulnerable and shit for the normies".

I fucking hate the world right now.

There's lots of poor people who have to live without any augmentation all over the place, since they can't afford it. It's not quite a dystopian setting, more of a "the future is a mixed bag" setting.

>when do they put people under for it.

If you mean do they put people asleep for the cyberbrain procedure, they actually don't. You are awake during the procedure. It's straining, but not super painful. They basically strap you into a chair, poke your entire head with things that looked like acupuncture needles that have nano bots install your cyberbrain and set up everything.

There are pictures of it in the original manga, but I don't have a physical copy to scan or look through atm.

So basically they ditch your whole body, and most of your brain. The only thing that matters is the "Ghost", which is just a clever parlor trick to get around the Ship of Theseus problem and incorporates the idea of the soul into the universe.

as far as I can tell it's combination of the puppetmaster with the character from the individual 11 plot
the laughing man plot is more interesting though
>>
>>79386030

That's not quite it.

There is a social stigma about cyberization of the brain because many people believe it leads to a lack of personality plasticity. They especially look down on the act with kids because they have yet to really form their own personalities, since they aren't adults. This is why most of the A level Hackers in the show are kids (or adults) who went full cyborg at a young age. They basically become autistic savants to some level or another. The Major, the Laughing Man, Kuze, literally every kid at that hospital, etc.
>>
>>79385986
>Do they ever go into detail on what they do for full cybernisation like the Major?

Your brain and part of your vertebrae get scooped out of your body, and encased in a cyborg brain/spine case, which is then made into the central nervous system for your new cyborg body.

Note: Your new body doesn't have to be human shaped.

Also, your original body is either discarded, sold for organs to pay for the cost, or put on ice in case you ever feel like going back to it instead of being a cyborg.

I'm aware, I am just saying there is a stigma to it.

I know she had it done because she had a terminal disease, so did Kuze. I'm just pointing out there's a definite problem with going full cyborg when you're young.
>>
Not trying to be an SJW, this is purely about in-universe reasons. Why are there so many white people? I thought race was still an issue in the GitS world. It's not that far into the future only like 2030, Japan would be still mostly homogeneous.

Shells can look like whatever you want them to look like. Also there is a considerable number of Americans in the show/movies. Further, the '95 movie didn't exactly do a great job of showing a real Asian aesthetic. The Major only kinda, sorta looks Asian. Batou isn't Asian at all. Togusa is barely Asian (if even that).

>>
>>79386100
She had the choice of remaining in her body and dying, but that didn't appeal to her. She chose her life, and she's long since come to terms with the lack of autonomy. What she grapples with is her "humanity".
>>
>>79386167

They did, but that's where the stigma comes from.

There seems to be a problem where cyberization causes this to happen in adolescents, so most parents don't let it get done until their children are adults. Togusa's daughter is an example of this. He found the whole notion of his daughter being cyberized so repellent that he was willing to kill himself (even if it wasn't him controlling his body).
>>
>>79386168
I think there's a pretty big difference between the Major in any of the existing media versus the Major as an amnesiac that's been forcefully cyberised and is now hunting down her creators

>she's long since come to terms with the lack of autonomy. What she grapples with is her "humanity".
And unfortunately it looks like Hollywood missed that entirely. They seem hung up on "muh freedom!" and it's gonna be about some kind of retarded rebellion or attempt to reclaim her freedom, as though she were some naive dupe that had never realized she was effectively government property.
>>
>>79386215
>There seems to be a problem where cyberization causes this to happen in adolescents, so most parents don't let it get done until their children are adults.

Oh, that makes sense. I thought it was implied that it was a standard procedure at that age and the kids at that hospital were just the minority that reacted badly to it by becoming NEET super hackers (instead of waifu-addicted shitposters)
>>
>>79386168
The major is still essentially the same in all versions of GitS. Her core personality that is. But she seems very different in this movie.
>>
>>79386252

The manga is the origin of anything that counts in the GitS universe.

It was Oshii's version that was the first major detraction.

That's the fault of the adaptations, not the source material.

GitS:Sac got closer than Oshii's version imo.
>>
>>79386268

Nah, it's the minority cases where this has happened that results in scared parents. It makes sense though, and it's an interesting quirk that they use to good effect in the story.
>>
>>79386279
FYI: if you ask literally anybody what the definitive GITS is, you'll get about a 70-30 split between Oshii's movie or Standalone Complex

Oshii is responsible for the iconic GITS, not Shirow.

Don't fight it. The word is generic.
>>
>>79386315
Mate, her body is a piece of high maintenance military hardware that needs to be regularly serviced. Running away in that body is unthinkable, and the major is nowhere stupid enough to overlook that simple fact. Another thing is, the major actually could leave if she wanted to. She's not an indentured servant. But she'd have to give up her body. She'd need to pay for her own civilian-grade prosthetic.

Eventually she does run away though in Solid State Society with her fancy body. Maintenance is just expensive and Major can easy make tons of cash money.
>>
>>79386323

Doesn't matter.

No one thinks about the manga as being a seminal work of its medium. Meanwhile there is a very strong argument to be made for the case of the '95 movie. I also think that too many people give Oshii too much credit, and no one gives Ito enough credit.

Ito was the sole writer on the screenplay, and he's been the writer for basically all of .hack// he also wrote the screenplays for Oshii's Patlabor movies.

When you consider that this was an adaption of a preexisting work, and it is such a major divergence you must consider where these ideas come from. Since there seems to be a repeating trend in Ito, I'd be willing to put a considerable amount of stock into him actually being the one who came up with most of the philosophical stuff, and the mechanics of how things operate.

As for the manga, isn't it hinted that the Major is just a dude who wanted a female pornstar's body?

Togusa basically boils down to two points design-wise
>Mateba
>Mullet
>>
>>79386259
>never realized she was effectively government property.

Even in Arise, where this is a major plot point, she never gets all muh oppreshun. She follows orders, her drive is mostly to solve the case, not the allure of freedom. She earns her freedom as more of a side effect/additional objective of getting to the bottom of the case. I feel like they paid way too much attention to arise. As while Arise's charter quirks made sense in context with the existing characterization of The Major, taken by themself without knowledge of the source material they could pretty easily be misconstrued as 'muh freedom' and a rebellion against authority. Her traits in Arise only make sense if you know who she develops into.

This whole new movie seems to have been done with no real love of the source material. Not adding any artistic vision to the universe but simply creating an action movie as approved by focus group #4113 using GitS paint by numbers set pieces.

The thing about Oshii's movie is that it took that source material and it took the core themes and ideas and made it into something unique and in my opinion, great without diluting it. It took the concepts and turned them into something that has a similar effect on the viewer, but in film form.

This new movie seems like they took the superficial elements, the tank, the camoflage and cyborgs and just pasted them into a safe action movie.

The stoic Major from the movie is almost nothing like the slutty and carefree one from the manga tho (and partly SAC)
>>
>>79386278
>The major is still essentially the same in all versions of GitS.

Yeah, no difference at all between so wacky XD manga Major, emotionally dead Oshii movie Major, cool but professional SAC Major, or rookie Major from Arise.

None at all.
>>
>>79386607
It's been a long ass time since I read the manga, but from what I recall carefree and slutty aren't really what I'd use to describe her. She had those elements to her, but only when she wanted to be those things. Like the R+R scene shown above. She still has those stoic elements and a sort of coldness to her outside of those very few intimate moments. She's still all business when it comes to getting things done, she just has a little bit more of a sense of superiority that comes across a bit more like in SAC. It almost borders on very dry quipping at times.
>>
>>79386681
>It almost borders on very dry quipping at times.

She makes funny faces at the Chief and cackles like a nutjob, she also gets extremely emotional too like when she smacks that kid who was sabotaging workbots to reveal he was part of a child slave ring.
>>
>>79386593

You son of a bitch.
>>
>>79386681
Well, yeah, when she has to be serious she gets serious. I think the exchange with the puppet master is the same word to word in the movie and manga. But i think my point still stands.

Plus it's just a trailer, for all we know the sillier lines like "they can't control me!1!" may not even be in the final movie. We've already seen this happening with "i rebel XD" and "you just started a Marvel™ presents: Captain America - Civil War©"

>>79389768
It begins with some of the inmates working on garden duty in a field and allotment area, with some C-Wing inmates working the field and A-Wing inmate Davis working alone in a greenhouse potting shed. The C-Wingers - James, Chambers and Smith - ask the supervisor gardener Mr Philpott if they can have a 'quick burn' (smoke) and they head to the greenhouse area to light up; upon seeing Davis alone, they enter the greenhouse.

A shocking sexual assault scene follows, with James leading the attack. Davis is sodomised by at least two of the inmates before Mr Sands enters, having seen what is going on through a window - he merely smiles to himself, as if sadistically amused by Davis' terrified cries and suffering.

Sands enters just as the gang are finished, and orders them to get back to work, and asks Davis what happened. Davis, lying on the floor sobbing, gives the standard excuse of having 'fell' as all inmates do when attacked or showing signs of injury. Sands, knowing full well what really happened, heartlessly tells Davis "Fall back on yer feet then! This isn't Kew Gardens laddie, on yer feet!"

Davis later learns that he will be on gardening duty again the next day, and, driven to despair and fearing another attack, commits suicide in his cell by cutting his wrists after warder Mr Greaves ignores his pleas for help. His bloodsoaked body is discovered by Mr Sands at morning call.

I didn't really want a remake of the original movie and I would have been fine a shortened version of the Laughing Man or Individual Eleven storyline but I feel like the whole "They created me but they do not control me" thing is pretty much what I suspected the movie would become, Blade Runner derivative schlock. It's "different" in the sense that it's just like every single major hollywood adaptation. Did we really need another "muh past" origin plot?

Cyborg? Yes. Emotionless? Not really.
The Major definitely isn't an emotional rollercoaster but in the original film her character could better be described as pensive or introspective. Which is pretty different from being emotionless. She wonders about the nature of her existence and she even makes a joke in her introduction about periods.

This movie is based on the english dub of the movie - which was terrible, and Major was VERY emotionless.
>>
>>79391525
I agreem we don't have to watch. No one is gonna sit us down and make us but when a series that a lot of people really like finally gets a live-action, high-budget adaptation its not like we can ignore it.
Watch it, but do not pay for it. There's nothing here to convince me that this will be a quality film. In all likelihood I'll pay for a movie I actually want to see, watch that and then sneak into the next showing of GitS. I could be pleasantly surprised and if I am I will be sure to buy it when it comes out on blu-ray or whatever. But I'm really getting teh BvS vibe here where if I pay for it, I will feel like I was robbed. Hopefully they don't pull that "BUT THE DIRECTOR'S CUT IS SO MUCH BETTER BUY THE BLU-RAY" shit when this one tanks though.
>>
>>79391554
I really like her english voice. ._.
>>
Scarlet really doesn't fit the Major role. She looks so weird. I understand that they needed a big name to sell the movie on, but it's jarring.

Someone like Rinko Kikuchi or Mary Elizabeth Winstead would be a better fit. They have the perfect resting pensive bitching faces. Scarjo just looks dumbfounded and confused.
>>
>>79391554
I'd really like to know if that is something a producer or the director said. I'm not saying that they really respect or even understand the source material but I really would be interested if they flat out said the dub was their 'inspiration'.

There is nothing cool about those giant colorful faces popping out of buildings

This trailer is as far away from kino as possible.

oooh seems like they've added a lot more new stuff to what we've already seen in the previous trailers... is it a good thing or is it a good thing or what kind of thing is it?

Why. I mean, I know it's hollywood, but why?

Just... ugh. This stings.

Wow, they really are going through the hollywood checklist with this one huh?

>FIrst trailer had slow sad pop song
>Second one has DUN DUN and mysteries to get normies invested
>>
Is that mysterious guy the laughing man? he was a great character in sac. I will be hugely disappointed if he is now this.
>>
>>79390592
now the villian is probably some horrible cross between the puppet master and kuze
>>
>>79391754
Producer already said that the Laughing Man is for the sequel. That dude is the villain from S.A.C 2ng Gig.
>>
>>79391644
>>79391123
Seriously though, what's the purpose of those giant ass holograms?

To hide how shit tier the city looks for a cyberpunk movie?
>>
>>79391123
I actually dig the look of the city in this, spcially the green neon in the buildings.
>>
>>79391786
>Producer already said that the Laughing Man is for the sequel
hooooo boy, I guarantee that the sequel with be with a different director, different lead actors and will be direct to DVD and will be better than this shit because they'll have to find someone who WANTS to make a GitS movie not a Blade Runner rip-off
>>
>>79391693

>Make lead characters white and say its a remake so its not racist
>If any of the focus groups happen to know anything about the source we can always chink up ScarJo's eyes with CGI, that should fill the diversity quota
>The audience is retarded so we should really make her background a mystery that we have to figure out over the course of the movie like Blade Runner, that made money right?
>Throw in a bunch of shots from the first one to get the nerds off our back
>Don't forget to start planning the sequel now so we aren't blindsided when this thing makes a billion dollars on day one

Dialogue was terrible.

ScarJo's nasally voice is also irritating.

It's not my fault every filthy chink wishes they were white and draw themselves that way. The only medium where dirty Japs actually look Japanese is porn.

At least there is potential for a lesbian sex scene.
>>

That's not the Major.

Why didn't they cast MEW or Rinko Kikuchi?

Why does Scarjo look so fucking stupid in every single scene. I'm not talking the outfit, her facial expressions are terrible in this trailer.

Look at this. This is how a badass Major should look. In control, sure of herself, serious.

Scarjo either looks confused or like she's pouting.
>>
>>79392526
Plus I'm 99% sure ScarJo will never be down for a straight up lesbian scene.

>Everyone complaining that Scar-Jo will ruin Major
>Implying Major is a decent character to begin with

Why are you all defending the objectively most boring Mary Sue of Television? She literally has as much personality as Lightning from Final Fantasy 13. If she wasn't wearing a Bikini no one would give a shit about her.
>>
>>79386122
Sapience, you dumb ass. All living things are sentient. Even worms are sentient. Hell, even several species of plants are sentient because they can physically respond to stimuli, such as venus fly traps.

SAPIENT means you are self aware, sentient means you are alive.
>>
writing has this awful, american, unintentionally deadpan sitcom 'bleak' tone

that's my main gripe with this

all that horrible exposition and as a result the movie will have tons of tonal problems.

>>79393217
they can't even tell an original plot anymore
>>
>>79393257
that's because it's obvious the audience isn't interested in getting to know a new concept but rather wants to 'recognize' an old one, cue all self referential comedy and capeshit quips.

soft reboot is a really good term.

So how do i watch the old stuff again? I'm confused here.

The 1995 one first obviously, then GITS2 Innosence?

And then, help anon.

The major had a sense of humor but was never this distraught lesbo character. I hate how they do this to what was essentially a cool slightly emotionless anime with true cyberpunk and mystery elements.
>>
>>79385252
Why are they turning GITS into something resembling a superhero movie? The script makes it seem like Motoko is some kinda fucking female Batman

I don't get it, they must see that the old movie already got famous and well reviewed because it's GOOD not because it had murrica generic plot, ost and action scene right?
wtf wrong with the people in head of Hollywood? wasn't they greedy but smart jew according to meme
>>
>>79393973
But she is literally a lesbian. In the fucking mangas she flat out has female only orgies where they are all stoned off their ass.
>>
>>79394159
Yeah I know about the manga and have seen those pages. But I only watched the anime movie and TV series (Which was GOAT for the first couple of seasons). I like the almost clinical nature of it and sex was only ever hinted at in those. You don't need sex in everything for it to be good. It was all about the intrigue and suspense piled with great action scenes.
>>
>>79394159
the manga is badly written with tropes also badly written from 80s scifi movies in US

Right, but Masamune Shirow was apparently attempting to expose American and Soviet elements that were working against Japan. They bounced between working against Japan and working for it. This seems more like a celebration of NGOs, foreign spies and propaganda.

America can't afford to let the Japanese produce a nationalistic GITS, with characters that are really at loggerheads with culture-distortion.
