i'm usually the crystal skull defender but it's obvious that if it came out back then people would still have criticized it for being too different. the first 3 movies are homages to adventure serials, which were themselves rooted in colonial adventure stories like Allan Quatermain

the first half of Crystal Skull (the good part) is a pastiche of iconic 50s cliches. you've got aliens, the red scare, nuclear tests, greasers. it's entertaining as hell, but it's barely an Indiana Jones movie at that point. then it turns into a shitty version of the earlier movies about an old man and his irritating kid instead of a dashing hero
