Has the latest episode brought you to tears? Can it be mentioned in the same breath as the Sopranos or the Wire?

Who actually got inspired to go to Church?

Pure pope kino.

>Has the latest episode brought you to tears?
Episode 9 is perfect 10/10

That said, i can see why this might not appealing to most peoples, due to the focus on Catholicism, the pro-conservative undertone in the surface, and the slow pacing of the story.

Honestly at this point in time in our culture it's a mark of true greatness to be received poorly. The shows that will be remembered as the best of this decade (i.e. Young Pope and The Knick) got little to no hype and regurgitated think pieces, and this board's ignorance and lack of attention to them has become the most reliable indication if a show has genuinely high quality.

TO NOT FORGET

HBO’s Vatican drama is darker and harsher than the memes would have you believe.

But . . . I don’t know. I’m having trouble reveling in it right now. The show’s accidental similarities to real-life events—Lenny was elected Pope in a stunning upset that confounded the Vatican establishment’s assumption that a more familiar veteran would win—are so keenly felt in the first half of the season that it makes for difficult viewing. I don’t really want to watch this amoral, perhaps insane autocrat exert his ordained might, upending an age-old institution while others fearfully scramble—disbelieving and caught entirely off guard—to save what they can. Sorry, that’s just not the kind of Sunday night I want to have right now. I’m sure those with stronger stomachs—or, indeed, different political sensibilities—will find something exciting or trenchant in The Young Pope’s political annihilation. But, for me, it’s no fun.
[...]
The main Italian in the cast is Silvio Orlando as a beleaguered, mole-flecked cardinal tasked with advising this cocky young Pope, and thwarted at nearly every turn. Cardinal Voiello is horrified by the new Pope’s flouting of tradition, his refusal to submit himself to observance of common courtesies and ethics. (Ugh.) Voiello plays the role of dutiful vizier when in the presence Pope Pius, though we know—and Lenny knows—that he’s much craftier and more resourceful than he lets on. A potentially satisfying bit of intrigue is developing there, but for my sanity’s sake, Voiello better be able to topple this frightening, power-mad narcissist. If not, all of Sorrentino’s style and quirky Euro humor will have been in the service of something rather cruel and redundant. We’ve already got a real authoritarian fox (Trump) in the henhouse to worry about. Lord help us, we don’t need another one on TV—blessed though he may be.

>A number of things might have been interesting in a show based on the idea of intrigues in the Vatican leading to a strange new Pope.
It had an opportunity to explore the institutions and cultures involved, the ideas, any number of things that HBO does exceedingly well in its highest achievements. But it doesn't really do any of that.

Instead, we get an interminable, frustrating character study of what is possibly the most punchable main character ever written for a TV series. And I say punchable very deliberately, because my overarching emotion through hours of programming was a deep desire for any other character to just up and punch the guy.

Jude Law's "Pope Pius XIII" is not an antihero. He's not a fascinating villain either. He is best word I can come up with for this a cunt. Just an absolute cunt. Thoroughly unlikable, thoroughly full of shit, completely up his own ass, lacking in any meaningful or interesting ideas, whiny and unsympathetic, just awful. And the show is hours and hours of that awful.

Why did I continue watching such a show? Because despite this agony, there's a lot of beautiful camerawork and great acting, and a vain hope that it all would go somewhere (which we can charitably hope is a metaphor for religion)

Nobody does anything. It's like a giant chick flick written by a medieval Byzantine eunuch. Everyone just talks in circles, treats each other poorly and then whines about their own guilt. The intrigues aren't actually intriguing or exciting in any way. It's the exact opposite of Canal+ extraordinarily visceral "Borgia: Faith and Fear."

A handful of scenes with James Cromwell as a pissed-off runner-up to the Papacy and betrayed mentor to the new Pope are one of the few genuinely interesting moments. A certain tshirt worn by Diane Keaton's nun character a handful of times as an understated joke is more interesting than 95% of the rest of the show. The rest is gloomy in a way that's not the least bit emotionally engaging, just swampy.

I tried looking at some Youtube reviews of the show and keep going on about how evil Lenny is for opposing gays. This is one of the reasons I hate millennials so much, you can do or say pretty much whatever you want, but if you criticize gays that's crossing a line. The first grievance they'll have about any conservative is that they oppose gays in some way because that's what is most important to them. Gays are the natural aristocrats. it mystifies me why some people think catholicism should "modernise". there are half a hundred different liberal, reformed christian denominations. the catholic church should just be what it is and always has been. im not a christian myself but if people want a conservative christian church then i have no problem with that in the slightest. and i dont see what the catholic church has to gain in the long run from trying to appeal to a subsection of the population who will always be implacably opposed to them no matter how "liberal" they become

The Young Pope is fucking amazing. Lenny is literally the Chosen One, but the bullshit of the world has turned him into a borderline autist.

He's trying to find a way to bring his light into the world, but the world makes it so hard that he doubts his own faith at times. The world resists him, though they need his light now more than ever.
>>
>>79411985
you're right but they are two totally different acts.

One is just acting outside of hetereosexual activity, the other is violently raping children and scarring them for life.

After dealing with Kurtwell and considering his own past, Gutierrez had a point, they're both actions deemed degenerate by the church but they're not equivalent to the same category.

I think he took offence to the Pope making a false equivalency between the two.

Watering down Christianity is what has allowed the state and the ruling class to hijack religion for the conservative white vote for the past century or so in the US. Hard-mode Christianity is about making Christ the center of your existence and letting your self fall away. This show is beautiful because it shows what real Christ following looks like. It's a pretty messy existence that makes most feel as orphaned as Lenny. Whether your gay or overly heterosexual, Christianity is fulfilling your role in God's church as Christ's representative in this world. Allowing your desires(whether it be sex, drugs, media, people, objects, money, power, reclusive living, insert character flaw here) to become the focus of your existence is the best con the devil ever pulled. Faith is actually easy, it's being a disciple and then bearing fruit as an Apostle that is difficult.

Try finding a very High Church worship styled United Methodist Church. You'll find a lot of the same vestments and the same accessibility to God and Christ as the Baptists. Not nearly as many Sacraments(two instead of seven)and the sermons will be more familiar. If you don't like it, you will find it to be a less jarring change when you do go full Roman Catholic.

I don't know, all the catholic churches I went to growing up were really hokey. It was rare that any valued solemnity over being a weekly community center

The worst was this little shithead priest who spent all of 2008 making barely concealed allusions to how Obama was gonna destroy the country after mass but before he said "go in peace", so everyone was held hostage by his town hall meetings. Not that I would have stayed religious anyway but shit like that killed it for me very fast.

It's ambiguous because it focuses on the character of the Pope rather than Church as a whole. That's the way these artsy "indie" film makers do stuff. It doesn't prove anything except reluctance to make definitive political statements.
However, when show focuses on the character of the Pope, it shows itself as being religious, as it does its best to definitively prove Lenny a Saint. And since it's a character focused work, the in state of characters and what film maker does within them rather with crude outward politics, is what's genuine.

You can't show faith and its sacrality if all you do is try to either marginalize it, blaspheme it or subvert it.
>"I literally don't understand the themes of the show"
I do. You probably don't, since you try defend things that don't really have an effect on the meaning of the show other than pointing out how it's subtly anti-catholic in its character

>Yeah, you're an idiot.
yeah, you're projecting

What happens if I was once dragged to mass, took communion because almost everyone else in the room did, and didn't eat the wafer because it looked like a piece of plastic when I thought they were supposed to hand out bread? Am I going to hell?

What was the point of his relationship with the landwhale landlord? I don't get it all.

Don't forget about the Leftovers too

She was a stand-in for Gutierrez's insecurity. She preferred to die in bed than to go through the window because of her fear of heights, like how he was terrified of leaving the Vatican. Her hesitation was what ultimately convinced him to stay in New York and finish his investigation, he didn't want to be -that- pathetic.

Finished it last night have have wholly avoided threads for weeks, though very tempting. Anyone wanna bring me up to speed on the best memes, waifu consensus, favorite characters, etc.

Jude Law was excellent obviously, Voiello is the fucking man, and Guiteriez stole the show the last couple episodes. Highly recommend seeing him in Almodovar's "Talk to Her." For me, PM of Greenland is top waifu. I wish I was fit enough to pull off Lenny's papal jogging gear.

Beautiful series, ranks along w/ The Great Beauty as Sorrentino's best, maybe even better. Youth was mostly a misfire, but I'd also recommend his Il Divo, dealing w/ similar subject matter.

I was raised Catholic, but don't believe in God any more and only time I go to Mass anymore is during funerals or sometimes holidays I'm spending with family

Is it appropriate for me to get back into the Church, even if I don't share many of its beliefs and don't plan on starting to believe in God again?

It's also not that cold, similar climate to Seattle or Vancouver.

Not that it matters, but the age difference between Sister Mary and Lenny seemed off, no?

From their younger days i think it was made clear she was only about 10 years older. If he's 42-45, she looks way older than 55 (real age 71)
>>
>>79426502
Lenny is said to be 47 so it doesn't seems so off, when she's shown with no veil on his head she may well look around 65/70 while older and 25/30 while younger

>implying he isn't the antichrist
I'm going to drink up the tears of all the self righteous conservative catholics here when that shit is revealed

>narcissistic and vain
>doesn't know either of his parents
>menacing smiles at the camera on several occasions
you guys are so blinded by your rigid ideology it's not even fucking funny

The writer talks about 'when i'm praying this' and uses other phrases that include him within the religion. He's definitely catholic and he talks about it as a practicing member of the church not as some 3rd party observer.
>>
>>79426417
you can never leave the church mate.
>>
Did anyone else think Gutierez wouldnt make it out of the US alive? It was foreboding there for a bit.
>>
>>79426712
you could ask the church where you were baptized to be removed from the archives of baptized people
not exactly a 'debaptism' as some like to call it but it's the closest you can get to officially leave the Church

only way for sure to leave it for good would be if you got excommunicated

It was great.
I liked the Africa part, showing how it was without going overboard.
