I seen a long ad for it before John Wick 2 and it looks all over the place. Seems like it has terrible dialogue and effects as well as some very iffy shots. However the character designs and sets look pretty good and it retained some of the cool scenes from the anime film.

Everything that's not heavily lifted from the anime film looks completely uninspired and bland. I don't think this has to exist at all.

Most Ghost in the Shell fans appreciate Oshii's version, but know the manga is superb.

Also, it's not like Oshii doesn't have his flaws. As an example, in most of his movies he gets sloppy about characterization/dialogue. He gets a plot set up, and then instead of writing a script, he just copy-pasta's philosophy quotes into characters mouths whether it fits or not.

The important thing is, all these adaptations are re-interpretations of the original source material and stand out on their own.

No, it's not. They deviate far too much for that to be the case. For one thing, in the new movie the trailers depict that Motoko is freshly put into a robot body, whereas in the original movie she had been in a robot body since she was a little girl. There's a line in one trailer where a doctor/scientist says to her "You're the first of your kind," which is also not the case in the original movie. By the time the original movie takes place, full cyborgs aren't uncommon at all, but in the new movie there's even a line from a character who looks into Motoko's eyes and says, "What ARE you?" as if a full cyborg like her is a completely novel idea.

It's fucking terrible. Original GitS has a setting that implies all the cyborg shit is just another day at the office, but new GitS is trying to make a story about what it's like to become a full cyborg after living your whole life as a regular human. It doesn't remotely match the source material and it's going to be garbage as a Ghost in the Shell movie, even if it's okay as a generic cyberpunk sci-fi flick.

1995 movie and all of Stand Alone Complex is definitely worth a watch. Innocence is there if you want more, and Arise is watchable if you're desperate for more GitS. Haven't read the manga so I can't speak for it.

I was surprised how closely they aped the original movie's scenes. Some of those shots were clearly made to be as close to the original as possible. Yet for some reason they found Motoko's personality too hard to write so they just completely rewrote her into an entirely different person. A shame, cause I doubt Hollywood Major is going to be even a tenth as interesting.
