I tripfagged as cloister !bellotgnp. before /who/ existed though posting in doctor who threads before /dwg/ or /who/ on /tv/. I originally donned it on another board for purposes of an ARG chat somewhere around 2009/10.

What happened to our mole in the Foreman team? Also, reminder to sign up for the BBC's survey thing, they're currently asking members for feedback about (1) shortened animations based on missing serials and (2) which Titan Comics we're interested in seeing adapted to animation. Are there any good ones? Four Doctors was... okay... and I'd like to see an animation of that Eighth Doctor miniseries they did, especially if they could match the art style. More McGann is always good.

They should just give 90% of their budget to Lawrence Miles in exchange for him writing some cheap episodes for them. He'd probably do it, and there is literally no way it wouldn't lead to a vastly better result.

I like the comics idea mostly because it would mean getting the actors in to record new voice-overs, plus it'd be interesting to see who they get to write and direct the adaptations. I dunno, it'd just be something we haven't seen before. Animating old episodes can kinda be done by anyone in the future, and the results will probably be better the longer they hold off anyway.

Possibly, also who's to say chinballs agrees with her or anyone else's wish for her to be the doctor. I'd think she'd be bit high profile and her salary would eat into the budget substantially when they could cast someone that will cost less. I think she would be quite the ratings draw and might be worth that extra cost, but what do I know.
>>79365030
Just speaking in the colloquial.
>>79365065
Possibly, but /who/ nose, right? She'd probably be in my top 10 or whatever and IF they were to choose a woman for the role, she'd probably be the highest profile one and would get the most out of the news i'd think.

>I know smith's salary really didn't compare, and I have no idea's about capaldi's.
And why do you think Hayley wouldn't work for Capaldi's salary?

How much do you think she makes not having a show and doing occasional Marvel cameos in old-drag and playing main characters' moms in Kenneth Branagh films?

And remember that even at the height of her career, which was more than half a decade ago, she still got back to England twice/year to do theater—and Big Finish Doctor Who. You think Nick Briggs can afford to hire Hayley, but the BBC can't?

She loves Doctor Who. She needs something unusual to fire up her career if she wants one last chance at being a megastar. Of course she'd take the job.
>>
>>79365309
>MUH MALCOM TUCKER DARK DOCTOR REEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
what a pleb
>>
>>79365826
I agree with everything you said. Gemma Arterton seems to be revving up her career big time lately with a bunch of interesting movies that have more of an international audience. My sense is that Hayley needs to do something similar if she wants one more shot at being a big name draw, at least while she's still in her physical prime. I don't think she'd be likely to turn down something like Doctor Who if it was offered to her, even if the salary is lower than what she might have been paid on her US network contracts (although we have no idea how much she made for Agent Carter and Conviction - could be less than we think).
>>
if haley atwell isn't the next doctor we protest the BBC!!!
>>
>>79365826
Well you're much more informed on her career than I clearly. Given this information I'd be even more hopeful that if the powers that be chose a woman for the job, would choose her. She'd be my first choice for female regardless of the news you've given me. However I don't trust the BBC's decisions when it comes to doctor who, and could easily see them botching the first female doctor choice, over a few dollars or just plain retardation.
>>
>>79365476
>I know smith's salary really didn't compare, and I have no idea's about capaldi's
According to rumours—which were prevalent and consistent enough to be printed in the Telegraph and the Guardian, not just the Sun, but still unconfirmable enough that the real papers emphasized they were only rumours…

Tennant started at £400K/year, ended at either £1M/year or a £5M total.

Smith got £200K/year his entire time, but made much more on the Adventure Games than on the show anyway, because BBC Online doesn't have any standard salary guidelines.

Capaldi gets either £400K/year or £500K/year.
>>
>>79365826
>>79365958
I'm really surprised Hayley has nothing lined up for 2017 yet. At least nothing publicly announced.

How is that even possible? Did anyone even play them? I tried like hell for ages to even get them to work, and when I did they were nearly unplayable. DS9 Harbinger tier gaming. Oh and amy regenerates for some fucking reason.
>>79366079
I've said for awhile now that Tom Ellis would be my pick for 13, but If they were serious at all about doctor who's longevity and ratings and committed to a female doctor atwell is the only logical choice and probably like 5th or 6th overall.

No idea, but most people on the BBC are.

Anyway, even if Tennant got 1M, that's still about half what a solid B-lister gets on a US network show. Nobody but Jonathan Ross and Jeremy Clarkson ever got American money out of the BBC. And after both of them announced their deals in public (despite having a contract saying neither side will do that) and then got themselves fired, it'll probably be a long time before anyone else gets similar…

Actually, Andrew Lincoln reportedly makes $90K/episode, which is only $1.4M/year.

I think the current highest salary per year is the Big Bang Theory stars, who each get about $25M, while the highest per episode is the top Game of Thrones actors, who get about $12M but only do 10 episodes rather than 22-24.

The lowest anyone can be paid, by guild contract, is 20-week scale, which works out to a bit over $40K/year.

I guess that makes sense. Originally the cable shows paid a lot less than network, and people took the job just for the shot at prestige/publicity. But now each cable network's prestige is entirely wrapped up in one or two shows, as opposed to the dozen plus shows a real network has, so the stars can get anything they want out of them. Capitalism at work.

Because when David Tennant left Doctor Who to do something else before he got burned out and/or typecast, that "something else" presumably didn't mean playing the same character on a show called "Doctor Who: Ten".

Getting him to come back for one special many years but not every year, that's probably the limit of what would be doable.

If Class feels like something some idiot slapped together for £17 to fill time on BBC3, that's probably because it's something some idiot slapped together for £17 to fill time on BBC3.

BBC1 prime airtime is a much more valuable resource. (And they're certainly not going to spend Doctor Who money on a BBC3 show, or hire David Tennant without spending Doctor Who money, so we'd have to be talking BBC1.)

Doctor who is fucking garbage.
It can tell any story in all of time and space and it always ends up a shitty looking celebration of mediocrity.
It's a predictable, safe formulaic children's show where the Le wacky man saves the day with some 'witty' banter and a 'clever' scheme.
The Doctor never goes anywhere in his development, just going from dark to light or dark to light depending on the incarnation.
It has no love for science or history, it just boils everything down for lowest common denominator. It's a waste of time and effort,
why don't you losers mature and watch some grown up television for a change.
You shouldn't watch doctor who unless it's with your own children but I really don't want you plebs procreating.

They finally had a good script editor, and a pool of ambitious and talented (if inexperienced) writers for him to draw from, and the BBC had given up on interfering. But I suspect without a new showrunner, it still couldn't have recovered as well as the remaining fans desperately believed it was going to, and even if it did, it still wouldn't have brought a new generation of kids in the way the show had always done when it was successful.

There are all kinds of things you can attribute it to but I'd guess that more than anything the cheesy production values turned a lot of people off. JNT is probably the cheapest-looking era of the show. and first impressions like that are important for drawing in viewers.

But what really killed the show is undeniably the hiatus. Even despite the poor reception of Colin's Doctor, season 22 was still doing okay, but after the hiatus the ratings went to shit and never recovered.

There are only 7 more stories that are recovered or at least animated.

You could do an Ice Warriors marathon with Ice Warriors and Seeds of Death.

Or a Cybermen marathon with Tomb and Invasion.

Or War Games, which is a marathon in itself.

Or you could watch Zoe's most mediocre story, The Krotons, and her worst, the Dominators.

Or just watch all 7.

Aren't they gradually releasing the old EDA/PDA and Virgin books as print-on-demand, through some weird deal with another company instead of from eBury/BBC Books or something?

I remember Lance Parkin talking about how happy he was that all four of his BBC books were part of the original batch, but none of his Virgin books, and he thought it was brilliant they were only doing a small batch at a time instead of releasing everything (which I never understood, but maybe he was just pretending to agree so he didn't sound bitter about The Dying Days not making the cut?). But that was a few years ago.

I just did a quick search and found Lance Parkin's blog posts about it, but they all link to a Random House website that no longer exists. Which isn't that promising…

If they released everything, I'd wait until I had the cash to buy the 30-odd EDAs I'm missing, and a couple of PDAs, all at once. But the original announcement was something like 12 EDAs and 8 PDAs, and most of them books I already had, so I didn't pay too much attention.

http://reprintthedoctor.weebly.com/

It looks like there weren't enough orders, partly because they kept changing their minds about what books to reprint, so these guys started a group to try to order as many as possible and help let other people know to do so, but it looks like they failed, because their website hasn't been updated in over 5 years and the outbound links are all to dead sites.

Meanwhile, looking at amazon, it's pretty funny how the prices vary on these books. The cheapest used Alien Bodies is $34, but you can get some of them for under $1. And War of the Daleks is not one of the cheap ones. Maybe people want to buy it just to see if it's really as bad as everyone says? Or John's mum has some spare cash?

Anyway, I just ordered the $0.89 copy of Scarlet Empress, so I didn't feel like I was wasting my time, but I definitely can't afford to buy all the ones I'm missing.

The first time I really thought of it as a collection was when someone asked if I had all of them, but by then it was maybe 2004. I did manage to find all of the last few EDAs, but as for filling in my collection—I looked on eBay, and the lowest price anyone had for Lungbarrow was about $85 (including shipping and currency exchange), so there was no way I was going to complete it. And then people started scanning and pirating them, so I got to read all of the NAs from start to finish without all that work. And then the new show started while I was doing that.

>Eye of Harmony
So I'm finally caught up on War Doctor audios. The final story of Agents of Chaos was one of the more bland ones and even worse than most about just being Doctor Who: Technobabble Wars. Still looking forward to the final volume with Leela though, pairing her with the War Doctor could be bretty cool.

How are the boxsets as a whole. I enjoyed the first one except the middle part. Deciding to continue them or Doom Coalition

Why river song / melody pond? If "shoot him twice" is what it needs to kill the doctor, why not let anyone do it? Why it had to be river song the one to kill him?

These days, 'coming out' is a good career move. So, I have my doubts as to the truth of these 'rumours', if they even exist.
