Discuss horror films and television series.

What was the last horror film you saw, and how was it?

Are you looking forward to David Gordon Green's Halloween reboot?

Are you sad that the Friday the 13th reboot was cancelled?
>>
I watched Seventh Moon a few days ago. It's by the guy who made the first Blair Witch so I thought there's a chance it'd be good.

It was garbage. It's not a found footage movie but for some reason it still uses an obscene amount of fucking shakey cam. Really, really, really bad.
>>
>>79361937
I had no idea that the guy who did The Blair Witch Project made other films. Are any of them worth checking out or is he a one hit wonder?
>>
>>79361979

He has a segment in VHS 2 that's really good. I forget what one it is.

But no, not really. One hit wonder.
>>
What are some good snow/winter horror films? There's a big snowstorm in my state right now. I've already seen every The Thing film and The Shining.
>>
>It Follows

Eh. They had a really good premise and built up some great tension but they just went nowhere and did nothing with it so it fizzled out pretty quickly. You can only have your characters run around in circles with the idiot ball for so long before you have to make something happen and they just never did. It was pretty much "Okay we're gonna go far away over here. It's here now let's go far away the other direction. It's here again let's go. Until the end with the pool when they finally tried to DO something.

Best Scene: Pic related

>DGG Halloween

Not at all really. I haven't looked up anything about it other than the people behind it but are reboots ever a thing to look forward to? Surprisingly I actually did like the Rob Zombie ones for the backstory but once it got to the Shape and the killing it stops being interesting. I also know for a fact they're going to give Danny McBride a role in the movie and I hate seeing his face. Ultimately I'd have rather seen Carpenter come back to create new horror rather than retread Halloween again.

>Friday the 13th Reboot

I didn't even know it was a thing or that it was cancelled so I can't be too upset. I stopped watching most slashers before they got too bad so dropped Friday after 4, Halloween after 1, Elm Street after 3, Scream after 1.
>>
My favorite horror film is The Blair Witch Project followed by Evil Dead 1.

>What was the last horror film you saw, and how was it?
Harbinger Down with Lance Heriksen. It's basically The Thing on a fishing boat. Pretty okay B-movie but definitely could have used a bigger budget for effects.
>Are you looking forward to David Gordon Green's Halloween reboot?
Cautiously optimistic but as with any new horror shit these days, I have low expectations for.
>Are you sad that the Friday the 13th reboot was cancelled?
Not really.
>>
>>79363742
>Friday after 4
5 is a mess but 6 is a great dumb fun slasher. It's by far the best of the Friday the 13th series. You should watch it.
>Halloween after 1
2 has some very sloppy writing but it's a solid slasher. It's the only Halloween sequel that comes close to replicating the dread filled atmosphere of 1.
>Elm Street after 3, Scream after 1
Wes Craven's New Nightmare and Scream 2 are legitimately good meta slashers. Watch them.
>>
>>79362262
watch Fortitude! Season 1 was good, season 2 is try hard entertainment but still better than most stuff.
>>
>>79364078

I have New Nightmare on my plan to watch for sure just because the concept sounded so interesting. I just got really turned off by 3 and to a lesser extent 2 taking the series in a more campy direction because I felt 1 was a masterclass in horror.
>>
>>79364201
Wes Craven's New Nightmare has some meta humor to it but it's less campy and more straight-faced than 2 and 3. Besides 1, it's the only ANOES film that treats Freddy like a very serious, ominous threat. I hope you enjoy it.
>>
Just watched The Borrower, trashy 80's flick

Looking forward to the new Aliens

Not sad that Friday the 13th was cancelled. t. Jason X
>>
>>79364284
While I like it for the most part, the kid is awful. At least 2, 3, and the rest don't have that obnoxious shit.
>>
>>79364368
My feelings on Alien: Covenant are 50/50. On one hand, I'm very happy that Damon Lindelof is gone and Ridley Scott is directing. On the other hand, the trailer was pretty meh and the writers don't fill me with hope. I'm praying it turns out better than Prometheus.
>>
yo, is hellraiser III worth a watch? II was already kind of bad
>>
>>79364384
The kid is a bit annoying at times and is definitely is the worst part of the film but I don't hate him.
>>
>>79364571
I do, I wish Freddy killed him, that would have been fucked up.

>>
>>79364459
Yeh same. I didn't like Prometheus at all, i felt like it took itsrlf too seriously above all. But I'm looking forward to what they're going to do with the Alien and what new ideas they have. It will be worth watching.
>>
>>79364538
It's really bad. The club scene is kind of fun. Hellraiser: Inferno is a lot better imo
>>
>>79364538
If you didn't even like the second one, you'll probably hate Hellraiser III. It's definitely worse.
>>
>>79364538
1 is the only great Hellraiser movie, 2 is the only Hellraiser sequel that some people argue is good, the rest of the series is varying degrees of bad. Don't bother with 3 unless you're a completionist or a horror fan who likes dumb schlock.
>>
>>79365431
I'd defend Hellraiser 2 because even though it's disappointing as a sequel, it's an okay horror movie all by itself.
>>
>>79365210
>>79365317
>>79365431
thanks, watched the first 20mins, realized it was horrible, skipped through the rest (club scene is pretty good, cd flipping cenobite is pretty good too)
>>
>>79364368
>>79364459
>>79365158

I actually really enjoyed Prometheus and felt like it had some of the same vibes that made Alien work just too updated and flashy.

Covenant on the other hand makes me think more of Ali3n. It feels a little too slasher shlocky with none of the artistic inspiration that went into making Alien so legendary. Hell, Danny McBride is in it. It looks like a teen summer camp movie with xeno.
>>
>>79365665
Prometheus was entertaining and the technical aspects of it were fantastic. The problem with it was the script. Lindelof's "DUDE MYSTERIES LMAO" shit really hurt the movie.

Seconding Black Christmas.

Last real horror film I've seen, highly recommended. Clever writing, great tension, interesting and distinct female characters, superb pacing. Light on gore, not that much violence but used quite effectively.

I've seen a good amount of creepy/atmospheric/horror films recommended to me by /tv/ the last couple of weeks.

>Jacob's Ladder 8.5
>Mulholland Drive 9
>The Ninth Gate 4
>Pontypool 6.5
>Picnic At Hanging Rock 3
>The Exorcist III 7
>eXistenZ 6

The Exorscist III really surprised me. I thought it would be crap, to be honest.
I have no idea why anyone would recommend Picnic At Hanging Rock to anyone. The scenes with the lordling and the servant guy were good, and the final dinner scene, but everything else was completely abysmal.
>>
>>79362262
Pontypool, its low budget but its a bottle film so it doesnt need a whole lot. I really enjoyed it
>>
>this faggot forcing his shitty general again

You left for months, fuck off. There aren't enough good horror movies getting released nowadays to justify an eternal general every fucking weekend.
>>
>>79368436
I agree that The Exorcist III is a surprisingly good film. I watched it last month after Blatty died. It doesn't get the credit it deserves.
>>
>>79368495
Yes, there is.
I still a hven't seen a lot.

What are some good horror television series? I've already seen Outcast and Ash vs Evil Dead, right now I'm in the middle of The Exorcist and I plan on watching Hannibal.

But I can't hate a horror movie with a practical monster.

It was announced a few days ago on John Carpenter's facebook page. David Gordon Green is directing/writing, Danny McBride is co-writing, John Carpenter is exec-producing and he might do the score.

Just watched this. More of an edgy comedy than a proper horror movie. Also, every character is an impossible asshole.

7/10
>>
>>79370586
It's a 7 because I like edgy shit, by the way. It's barely a 5 as a horror movie.

Thanks to whoever recommended Housebound, it wasn't really funny at all (someone described it as a comedy/horror film) but it was a lot less shit than what I expected and the twist was kind of interesting. I thought the start was a little slow and they dragged out the final 20 minutes or so, but it was a solid 7/10 film that should get more recommendations.

It's a really product of its time. It almost comes off comedic these days but you have to appreciate how fucking terrifying it would have been in the year it came out.

Yeah, it has a fantastic atmosphere and some subtle scares that still work but a lot of the stuff that was outrageously scary in the 70s is considered comedic by today's snarky kids. The writing, acting and cinematography have aged flawlessly though.

I enjoyed the first three hellraiser films and thought nightbreed while having shit editting was actually dumb fun. I remember thinking candyman was up there with the first hellraiser too in terms of Barker's work.

He's okay in some stuff, like in the Hatchet movies or in Exit to Hell, and I do think he has a great horror movie physique, but I agree that he's generally overpraised. Most of his parts (including the one in Muck) could be played by just about anyone.
>>
>>79372353
I need to see Hatchet.
>>
>>79372444
Yeah, it's worth a watch, though it's a bit heavy on the self-aware humor. If you end up disliking it, you should still give Hatchet II a chance. It's a better movie, in my opinion.

>>
>>79372751
Didn't like it as much as Hatchet II, but it's still alright. I think the first one is the weakest even though it has arguably the highest production values and the best acting. The others are gorier (especially Hatchet II) and not as obnoxious in the humor department, though, which elevated them for me.

It's a solid trilogy either way.

I watched Erasehead the other night and now I wonder about this:
In every horror movie characters are scared by situation presendted in the movie. Do you think that something like a "slice of life" horror would work? Plot revolves around something that is scary to us but for characters in the movie universe it's just a fucked up situation that they have to deal with. Imagine Erasehead with all the surreal elements cut out, it's just a story about a guy with a mutant kid.

I would like to see the series come back in a big way, I'm sick of these shitshow PG-13 ghost movies and found footage. It probably would have been terrible anyway, so whatever.
