Salt was typically poured into wounds since the Civil War. It caused tremendous pain and helped the soldier focus on staying alive
>>79359439
It's called a visual metaphor. Speilberg is making a play on the phrase 'to pour salt on the wounds', the guy has already been shot, so in order to 'pour salt on the wounds' as it were, the other men LITERALLY pour salt on the wound. In another ironic twist of fate, further metaphorical salt is poured on the wounds because he dies.

Salt is used as a preservative. On the battlefield they can't get the bodies to a mortician on time, so in order to prevent the bodies from decomposing they salt the wounds.

Historical illiterates everywhere in here.
They're pouring sulfa powder on the wounds - sulfonamides were the first mass-produced antibiotic, invented in the 1930s.

Not an expert on military first aid or anything, but it feels like they're not acting with much common sense here.
Rather than bandaging or putting pressure on the wounds to stop the bleeding, they're just wiping away the blood and allowing him to continue bleeding all over the place.
I would imagine it's supposed to be a hemostatic agent
