Mr Bean was a fucking genius idea. The fact that it was pure physical comedy with no dialogue meant it had universal appeal and no need for translation. It was easy to sell all over the world, and is popular as fuck in all sorts of weird places you wouldn't expect to see British comedy, like North Africa and South America.

There really wasn't any ideological endgame in mind. Germany was just supposed to go to war with France and Russia to keep Russia off Austria-Hungary's back while they fought Serbia because of the death of Franz Ferdinand. It rapidly spiraled out of control in a way that's hard to describe - where it took months for WW2 to really heat up and years for all the major participants to be involved, WW1 went off like a bomb, with almost everyone involved within days. Within a few months, the rapid movement of the long-laid war plans had ground to a halt and no one knew how to end it, so they just kept expending men until they could figure something out.
