Can we talk about the reasons why television in China, Korea, and Japan are so completely inferior compared to the Anglosphere?

Is it just a result of having completely different tastes? Do I have to be Korean to enjoy this shit? Because 99% of it seems vapid as fuck.

Can anyone point to me a show that even rivals Fargo in the Orient?
>>
>>79328070
Fuck, now I want to rewatch Fargo S2.

Man man
>>
>>79328070
Japan has anime.
>>
>>79329016
>>79329099
S1 was good too.

Seriously, why doesn't Korea or Japan have stuff like this?
>>
>>79329016
With the exception of Hanzee being Tripoli it was perfect, but that one last call forward hurt the show quite a bit for me.
>>
Terrace house on Netflix is goat.
>>
>>79328070
>Because 99% of it seems vapid as fuck

That's pretty much western media in a nutshell
>>
>>79329266
Wrong. American television is in a golden age right now.
>>
>>79328070
My guess is that the harsh working (and study) conditions (in japan at least) create a need for more "fun" shows. Most of the single salarymen and women are thinking of a walk to the suicide forest frequently. After a long and demanding day at work they dont want to open the tv and look at some depressing shit for the rest of the day. They already feel bad without that. That's also propably why Otaku's like moe so much.

>Asian television thread

Let's talk about how shit Filipino shows are.

Teleserye, teleserye everywhere.
>>
Japanese shows like Beach Boys and Nurse Aoi are top tier
>>
>>79329344
A golden age where most things are still painfully mediocre. More things just happen to be getting made.
>>
>>79329405
That's weird. When I'm depressed, I want to watch something depressing. And my life isn't too bright, by the way.
>>
>>79330513
Why? I'be been "melancholy" for a whole now and some dark and melacholy stuff seems counter-intuitive for my mental health...
I get the feeling that a panic attack might come easier while watching something like that but i have no actual evidence of that being the case yet...

Because most of the actually talented people from these chink countries go on to make films instead of doing tv

To be fair, 99% of western TV is vapid as fuck.

Television is a shit medium bro

Asian TV is about 30-40 years behind Western TV in a lot of ways. It's why you see places like Japan still using the exact same variety and talk TV format that America used back in the 60's and 70's.

That said, I'd make the argument that Asian Television is vastly superior in the Game Show, Variety, and Reality genres.

>why television in China, Korea, and Japan are so completely inferior compared to the Anglosphere

Our model of television production financing is almost alien to Japan's. The production company literally rents airtime from the network and then prays that physical media sales will recoup their investment (which is why anime DVDs cost $100 for 4 episodes). I can't speak to China or Korea.
>>
>>79331355
>Asian TV is about 30-40 years behind Western TV in a lot of ways. It's why you see places like Japan still using the exact same variety and talk TV format that America used back in the 60's and 70's.
This. I somehow found a stream of live morning Japanese TV a couple years back and it was vintage 1974-75. I honestly expected this to be the incidental music.

And yet, Japanese television funds theatrical productions esp. live-action adaptations of anime (Parasyte, AoT).

I don't usually try to watch Asian television because most of what I see in JP season listings is either adaptation of anime/manga, or soap opera and not being fluent in JP I have no idea where the few good things are.

The biggest letdown was Sumire17!, not just because I'd read the entire manga voraciously but because I only knew that manga existed due to someone posting a screencap of the show here on /tv/. To be fair, the acting wasn't terrible and the producers KNEW what they were up against.

Live-action anime adaptation in TV and movies is as cancerous there as capeshit is here, but they've been doing it longer and presumably take fewer risks by doing it more cheaply.

If I had to describe the Japanese movie and television industry in one word it would be "undercapitalized."

But other shows can fail without budgetary reasons as well. Sumire16!'s adaptation only lasted a season, probably because suspension of disbelief in the manga lets you get past how creepy the premise is if you think about it. With live actors, it's more of a hurdle (and the puppet's kind of ghastly too).

The only Asian soap I watched for more than 5 minutes was something about Hong Kong organized crime royalty in the roaring 20s until my food arrived for takeout. I could tell the acting was mediocre but it had glitzy dresses and machine guns. I probably would have liked it with subtitles.

Then again it's not like any country's soap operas represent the vanguard of television, now is it. I mean, the term "Australian soap opera actor" is generally understood to mean "couldn't make it in porn."

Different taste, smalle budgets, developing their stuff only for the internal market, etc.
I'm from a country that lately produced at least two good TV shows, yet the large majority of our production is simply awful.
>>
>>79334329
No, but I know it's not better than Fargo S1 or S2.
>>
>>79334850
Well I've seen all 3 and I say it is.
>>
>>79329950
Only absolute numbers matter. Who cares if there's 100 shit being made? I'll watch the 10 that aren't shit.
>>
>>79334932
And you'd be absolutely false. I bet all the symbolism in Fargo went over your head tbqh.
>>
>>79328070
Don't know about Korea and China, but in Japan, TV is not seen as a serious medium. Koreans are too insular and just make stupid shit only they would like.

Real answer is, though, that they know the world is not interested in watching shows only featuring Asian people. American can export good shows to other countries and people will eat that shit up, but even if some Asian country made something objectively similar to Breaking Bad, the Sopranos, whatever, the rest of the world wouldn't want to watch it.

People want to watch attractive white people on TV.
>>
>>79332314
Plebian taste
>>
>>79335104
Why are you acting like such a child? You haven't seen the show, so you can't say that for certain. You're coming off as a retard using words like "absolutely" when you have no clue what you're talking about. Preferring one over the other is totally fine, but you haven't even seen the other show.

I watched Fargo weekly with /tv/, read all about theories and such, but frankly I don't remember much of anything about the show besides all the key plot points. It's not fresh in my memory. I don't see how that's relevant or would affect my enjoyment of the show. It's not a Lynch show. It was a decent show, far from the best show of 2014 and 2015 (?).
>>
>>79328070
There have been a lot of good Korean movies though.
>>
>>79335378

I can't believe a Korean movie made me take it so seriously. This is all the SW prequels ever dreamed to be.

>>79329208
>>79332308
I know, I like the fact that they tried to end it with a twist but that was a very bad decision.
>>
>>79335298
That's not true at all. Japanese horror, Korean revenge thrillers, Chinese kung-fu movies, all very popular with Western audiences.
>>
>>79335399
That's not even close to being true. Just admit that you don't shit about Korean cinema and have only seen the 2-3 most mainstream Korean thrillers.
>>
>>79331427
god why are asian dudes so fucking faggy
>>
>>79335604
It's a show with "flower boys" aimed at teenage girls and old ladies.
>>
>>79335515
Fine, but we're talking about television. Western audiences will watch a one-off thing of an interesting subject like Japanese horror, but they're not going to watch a look into the lives of an average salaryman week after week.

That's why I said "on TV." As in something you're going to watch repeatedly for years. We'll watch like an Oscar-nominated flick made in some shithole Middle Eastern country if it's good, but that doesn't mean we want to watch TV show that reflect their lives.
>>
>>79335399
They might mostly be dramas, but they are really well made.

>Can anyone point to me a show that even rivals Fargo in the Orient?

>>

Choi-Min Sik is top tier Korean actor. Watch his other movies.
>>
>>79335731
First season is a 7/10 at least. There are plenty of better series from many countries. Seems he just discovered his first serial drama.
>>
>>79335523
The other stuff is shit though
>>
>>79335813
It's critically acclaimed and loved by a lot of people, but I'm sure you just have superior taste than the rest of us.
>>
>>79335690
People in general are definitely racist in regards to their viewing habits (proof of this is the fact that movies with black casts do terribly with international audiences), and I would say there's almost a universal preferences for lighter skin, and this can translate into their TV and film preferences (see Latin American telenovels), but I don't think white people (or people of any race) have any problem watching movies and TV shows with Asian casts. I'm not Asian or a weeb or anything, so I don't have a dog in this fight. That would just surprise me very much because while Asians and white look and act very different, I don't feel like there's substantial enough differences for me to imagine anyone behaving this way. "Oh, look, this movie looks great, but dammit, the actors and actresses have epicanthic folds. Can't watch it." That just seems bizarre. Even /pol/acks love Asian shit. You're posting on a Chinese cartoon board for Christ's sake.

Asian television isn't for everyone. Its the kind of thing you have to make a commitment to get into, you cant just watch 5 minutes of it on Netflix and expect to immediately like it.

I think a lot of people should make a effort because Hollywood is so degenerate right now. Also why give money to people who hate you, the white/male/4chan user?

At least asian television doesn't push SJW propoganda down your throat. Also I'm so disgusted by american female actresses nowadays. Its nice to have characters played by actors whom I haven't seen coming out of a grocery store in ugly leggings and no makeup

Asian-American cast would probably go over well if the show itself was decent, since Asian women are generally desirable, Asian men aren't seen as overly threatening or alien, and everyone would embody values and practices familiar to an American audience.

Salty white women probably wouldn't like it though.
