That scene at the end of episode 8 where he made the speech in Africa with this song playing in the background

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2Yl0ALK3-4

was the most beautiful television I had seen in a while
>>
I just finished watching this last night. Marathoned the whole thing. Is he a narcissist?
>>
>>7932662
i think he is a narcissist, but he's also legitimately a saint. he's a real human bean who happens to have the genuine bona fide grace of god
it's what makes the show so good
>>
>>79326622
probably
>>
>>79326510
Africa episode was pretty kino
>>

Which episode wasnt?

In the beginning yeah. At the end nah.
>>
>>79326510
>start watching this thinking it would be some reddit tier brand of meme show because of random out of context screencaps
>be hit with this level of kino
It's been a while since I've been surprised this pleasantly.
>>
finish watching The Young Pope, don't know what to watch now. There isn't another serie with this level of kino

>>
Reminder that if you ain't a Catholic, you're a loser.

Deus Vult amicum
>>
So is this show about a reddit pope who blesses gay marriage and women being priests in the catholic church or about the "deus vult" type of pope?
>>
>>79327941
no, the pope is basically trump.
>>
>>79327961
This opinion is inexcusable unless you're just watching the first episode now
>>
>>79327941
Much closer to "deus vult."
>>
>>79327941
He's actually a pretty conservative pope who doesn't quite believe in God but aside from that he's free of sin (a saint) and can also perform miracles by "speaking" to God and channeling His grace.
>>
>>79328017
i watched the whole series. loved it. he's basically trump in a sense that his this new rebellious figure on the scene that everyone hates and wants to impeach.
also he wants to get rid of gay priests.
>>
>>79327941
he's literally /pol/ in that he's a """cultural Christian""" who believes in traditional European Christian doctrine but can't really convince himself to believe in God
>>
>>79328042
I don't understand how he doesn't believe when he's able to do crazy things through prayer
>>
>>79327941

I only watched episode one and hes dreaming of telling people to fuck each other and use condoms, that gay people are okay and that they should get abortions, hes having dreams about saying it in public and everybody is mortified

Coupled with him actually being an atheist I think hes exactly the kind of reddit pope you're thinking of beats me why idiots think hes "trump pope"

in fact the show was so reddit I quit after the first episode
>>
>tfw watched The Borgias then went straight to The Young Pope

any more Papal kino? or should I just go to church tomorrow and see what this shit is all about?
>>
>>79327941
It's the "stop trying so hard, you edgy basement dweller" type
>>
>>79328145
I actually feel bad about giving this shitpost a (You)

but there may be people reading who see this and quit the first episode after that dream where the audience is tricked into thinking he's some Pope Francis-tier cuckold
>>
>>79326510
The soundtrack to the series is beautiful. There's a spotify playlist.

I am partial to this remix of Halo myself

Sorrentino's film from about a decade ago, Il Divo, a true story
>>
>>79326510
Even though it's completely different, this show kind of reminds me of "Twin Peaks" - there's a sort of tongue-in-cheek sense of humor to the whole thing, it's sometimes tough to tell which scenes are meant as satire, and which are meant to be taken seriously. But then it's the strangest, most out-of-left-field moments that feel the most sincere and powerful.

The scenes where Lenny uses the "power of prayer" to help Esther conceive, and then to punish the corrupt nun in Africa, are ridiculous on paper, but somehow the show makes it work. The way prayer just "works" for Lenny is pretty much the way I always wished it'd work when I was a kid - he just concentrates really, really hard on something he wants, and it just happens.

I'm rambling now but it's a great show, best I've seen in a long time.

Seeing as he clearly prays for intercession at various points and then his wish "coincidentally" gets fulfilled (killing the african nun, getting that girl pregnant), does that mean the holy spirit actually exists in the young pope universe

>>79328138
I think people are misunderstanding his loss of faith. When he says he doesn't believe in God, he's not saying it in the sense that God physically exists.

In the dream speech in the first episode and the Africa speech, he says that he tells children that God is in the things they like. In the Africa speech, he also says God is peace, and for him peace was his parents. Because he was never able to get over his abandonment by his parents, he doesn't feel God's love or his presence in his life because He's more than just some nebulous being in Heaven, He's in all the things that give people passion.

TO NOT FORGET

HBO’s Vatican drama is darker and harsher than the memes would have you believe.

But . . . I don’t know. I’m having trouble reveling in it right now. The show’s accidental similarities to real-life events—Lenny was elected Pope in a stunning upset that confounded the Vatican establishment’s assumption that a more familiar veteran would win—are so keenly felt in the first half of the season that it makes for difficult viewing. I don’t really want to watch this amoral, perhaps insane autocrat exert his ordained might, upending an age-old institution while others fearfully scramble—disbelieving and caught entirely off guard—to save what they can. Sorry, that’s just not the kind of Sunday night I want to have right now. I’m sure those with stronger stomachs—or, indeed, different political sensibilities—will find something exciting or trenchant in The Young Pope’s political annihilation. But, for me, it’s no fun.
[...]
The main Italian in the cast is Silvio Orlando as a beleaguered, mole-flecked cardinal tasked with advising this cocky young Pope, and thwarted at nearly every turn. Cardinal Voiello is horrified by the new Pope’s flouting of tradition, his refusal to submit himself to observance of common courtesies and ethics. (Ugh.) Voiello plays the role of dutiful vizier when in the presence Pope Pius, though we know—and Lenny knows—that he’s much craftier and more resourceful than he lets on. A potentially satisfying bit of intrigue is developing there, but for my sanity’s sake, Voiello better be able to topple this frightening, power-mad narcissist. If not, all of Sorrentino’s style and quirky Euro humor will have been in the service of something rather cruel and redundant. We’ve already got a real authoritarian fox (Trump) in the henhouse to worry about. Lord help us, we don’t need another one on TV—blessed though he may be.

it's the buildup and context to these points in the story. if the show started with Lenny doing these things, or if you isolate them out of context, it would be cheesy, but when taken into context with the rest of the story it's a masterpiece

>>
>>79339683
The "death of God" refers to mass irreligiosity and loss of faith, it's not a literal expression.
>>
>>79339874
it refers to the birth of modernity and inevitably post modernity. The death of anything previously held to be sacrosanct or an immutable truth. God was just the ideal expression for what was being killed
>>
>>79339911
>The death of anything previously held to be sacrosanct or an immutable truth
it refers to loss of religiosity and faith in higher values explicitly, which is a consequence of modernity, not the same thing. save your lectures for people who want them
