I went the Quarry Junction route when I first played even though NPC's warned me not to. Basically ended up walking into Freeside with zero ammo and consumables left, all limbs broken, and a smidgen of health. They either have absolute shit writing (not that much worse than most movies though) and the few that have some quality are far too long to fit a 3 hours max medium.
Many videogames, even some semi AAA stuff like New Vegas are also far too experimental in their narration and atmosphere setting compared to movies. The Witness to give a recent example was a commercial success and has precisely zero story. Everything comes from exploring the gameplay and the world.

I can just see it now, the protagonist moves forward 20 feet, finds a place to explore, goes in kills something finds jack shit then leaves. Rinse and repeat for 110 minutes until the plot final comes along and then is resolved in the last 5 minutes.
