I remember this long winded, incredibly pompous Amazon review where some guy tried to sound smart by claiming the first season was the only good one and the others were lowbrow and tasteless for having actual jokes in them.

On the day of shooting the pilot they still weren't certain on the direction of Rowans character and when he got on stage he winged it and played it as this creepy awkward pathetic adolescent with a dark streak. Which was odd since in the pilot, he performed Blackadder like the cynical bastard we came to know.

Baldrick was the peasant with a common mans touch and had a lot of practical knowledge the pampered Blackadder didn't. Percy was still the guileless fool. Brian Blessed as the verbose, almost insane King was probably the best original thing in the series.

Also shooting on location in a real castle and in real English conutryside didn't make it any funnier.

In the second season, which they had to beg for, they retooled the Blackadder character and his relationship with his dogsbody Baldrick. They also opted for small, almost theatre like sets. This served as not only a cost cutting measure but also made it much more obviously a comedy. The incredibly small, fake looking sets were much more conducive to laughs than watching Rowan on a real horse in a real foggy English countryside. It made it more about the characters and less about the surroundings.

This. Blackadder is the perfect example of why Britain turns out so much kino comedy.

Blackadder season 1 was a misstep. Not bad, it just never lived up to it's potential. If this were an American show, it would be cancelled.

But the BBC agreed to give them a second chance, on the condition they lower the budget. The team worked within this limitation and focused on fixing what wasn't working with the characters. They solved the largest problem by changing Blackadder into the cunning Machiavellian character he would be in the rest of the series. Miranda Harts Queen Elizabeth was also a wonderfully weird creation.

By Season 3, they had Blackadder and Baldricks master/servant relationship figured out and they dropped Percy who ok but never hilarious. Instead they replaced him with Hugh Laurie as the moronic prince who played a Percy type but 10x funnier because he was in a position of authority over Blackadder.

And by season 4, Blackadder and Balders were iconic characters. Hugh Laurie's George was so popular they brought him back.

They kept up the idea of a buffoon running the show with Stephen Fry's Melchett, who's mustachioed barking and lack of military strategy made him instantly funnier than the Melchett from season 2.

They also brought back Tim Mcinnery, not as Percy, but as Darling, Blackadders snivelling suck-up rival, who was so good you wish they had have had Darling in earlier seasons.

Add cameos by Flashheart and Bob, happy callbacks to some of season 2's best one-off characters and one of the most poignant endings to a comedy series ever and you've got a perfect season of television comedy.

And then they said, that's all folks! They knew they would never top that season or that finale so they ended it. The exact opposite of the American system where once a show hits it's stride they run it until all profitability and public favour is gone.

TLDR: Blackadder got better with each season and then ended with on it's best season period.

Last season was the shittiest after the Queenie season. HURR DURR WE EAT LE PIGEONS AND DRINK LE PISS HURR DURR WE DIE AT THE END. No historical references for intelligent people, no paraphrasing classic western literature, nothing. What a crock of schlock.
