America as a colony wasn't even top 10 in their most valuable properties, the carribean + india + opium made the english waaaaay more money, and the english parliament at the time was half for just letting the americans become basically independent

The brits sent an appropriate response (like a couple green battalions) to the Americans telling them to fuck off, and when that didn't work they just didn't bother anymore

Did anyone else have a certain degree of difficulty distinguishing Norrington and Beckett when watching through the movies for the first time? I wasn't always certain which was which unless they were explicitly referred to by name.

The only poor part of Beckett in the series is that he's never given an initial establishment as a character. All that can really be told - for a while, anyway - is that he's a semi-corrupt British authority with a great deal of influence.
