So why should I ever feel sorry for everyone if feudal serfs existed? Or African babies eaten by vultures? Why should I ever feel sorry for anything or anyone?

No, you were supposed to be feel sorry for him because no matter what women he got it never satisfied him, and he could never get attached to anyone after what happened to him and his sister when they were children.

The only pleasure he got in his life was the five seconds after he came, and when that happened he immediately moved on to try and get that few seconds of happiness back.

So? Anyone can become depressed for all sorts of reasons. Loss of a loved one, chemical imbalances in the brain, general ennui, isolation etc. Depression is very much a first World phenomenon.

You seem to have this idea that depression is tied to affluence when all studies into it show the opposite to be true. In America for example, depression is far more common in the inner cities and economically-stagnant/struggling rural areas that it is in economically prosperous areas.
