Why won't Americans just watch movies with subtitles?
>>
>1. All male characters will have mutilated penises
>>
>Kristen Wiig

Can't wait for her to do something awkward and silly then laugh and throw her head back, maybe roll her eyes too
>>
>>79291928
Because they genuinely are on the reading level of a nine year old, have you heard Americans talk about subs, it's like they're small children.

> I can't concentrate on what's happening on the screen
> it passes too quickly

Americans literally take several seconds to read a sentence.
>>
>>79291928
From what I've read online they're simply not that good at reading.
>>
>>79291928
While I'm tempted to be excited, because Nicholson is perfect for the role, Wiig doesn't fit.

>most famous and best scene involves protagonist completely nude for extended amount of time
>Wiig will refuse to do it
>>
>>79291928
Subtitled movies anywhere aren't a particularly great money making exercise, whether it be the US, UK or any other major movie market, so studios take good ideas and repackage them. That said, I don't particularly see this being the greatest money making enterprise... then again, what do I know.

It true, I believe, that US audiences seems the most vehemently opposed to such things, I suppose one might be able to garner all manner of conclusions from that. I'm not going to bother because why be elitist about such things?
>>
>>79291928
why dont they just dub movies in america?
this doesnt seem so hard, and they could just stop remaking a whole good foreign movie with their american shit
the tourist was horrible, and toni erdmann was good in german
>>
>>79292863
Dubs are only tolerable on animated stuff. Dubbed live action is cringy as fuck.
>>
>>79292947
im from germany, every foreign movie here is dubbed and on a very high quality mostly
>>
>>79291928
how can you direct someone else's film? especially when it came out last year? how do they not feel shame?
>>
>>79291928

Our mass media is written to be understood with a 2nd Grader's level of reading comprehension.

Make of that what you will.
>>
>>79291928
Is Jack doing it for the money or is he getting "forced" to do it?
>>
>>79293364

Even worse that your president talks like a 2nd grader.
>>
>>79293381

One last Oscar nomination
>>
Toni Erdmann wasn't good to start with
>>
Every time I ask people who don't watch movies with subtitles they say "If I wanted to read a book I'd go to the library."

I think it's that people can't read fast and they end up frustrated because they miss what is happening.

That's certainly not the problem; I mean, dubbing exists for a reason.

It's just money grabbing.

What did they mean by this?
>>
Europeans don't watch subtitled movies in languages they don't at all very often either. It's different to watch a film in English and use subtitles as a support for the occasional thing you don't catch and another to have to rely on them for every line.
>>
Jack was retired? He's like 60
>>
Honestly if you heard the average American try to read out loud you would know why.
>>
>>79293381
I bet for the tax breaks mostly, and old people get bored and lonely easily so why not do something related to the craft you love?
>>
>>79291928
This is hardly exclusive to Americans. Europeans get movies dubbed into their native languages. Russians just have a translator speaking over the movie.
>>
>>79294179
Nope. In a large majority of european countries, american movies still make up for more than half the revenue and only the biggest few blockbusters every year get dubs. Furthermore, in countries where many people already have at least a rudimentary understanding of english, they prefer to leave the english audio up.
>>
>>79291928
Toni Erdmann

>first the film is incredibly boring
>then it becomes kind of interesting for like 15 minutes
>then it becomes boring again
>then it goes on for another 3 hours

What a waste of time.
>>
>>79294185
He's turning 80 this year.
Remember, this guy was in the original 50s Little Shop of Horrors, was in movies with Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, and Peter Lorre when he first started out.
>>
>>79294216

>Nope
>doesn't contradict me
YES, people watch movies in English, a language they largely understand, with subtitles. They don't (usually) watch movies in languages they don't understand at all without subs; which for most Americans is all languages except English.
>>
>>79293168
i'm german, too.
if you're used to watching movies in their original language, or seeing words actually come out of people's mouths like in real life, watching something that's dubbed is just irritating on so many levels - in german dubbed films you hear that it's recorded in a studio and not on location, the dialogue is too clear, people are mostly talking in one volume, there's almost no dynamic, everything has to be heard clearly. I've been avoiding dubbed films since i was 16 years old, and i don't just watch english movies where i can actually understand the language. so much of the acting is transported through the voice, and so much is lost by just dubbing over it.
>>
>>79292130
Not all Americans I can hit 2000 words a minute but yeah way to many kids are taught reading is dumb
>>
>>79294891
true, dubbed movies are actually the biggest pleb filter.

>>79291928
I can see why they would make a remake. the characters were very European to begin with. Then you also got that nudity scene.

what changes does he suggest?
>>
>>79291928
It's because we are not used to subtitles and people from non-English speaking countries are. Thus only the Americans notice that using subtitles genuinely takes away much from the experience of watching a film. While watching a movie with subtitles you must keep your eye on the bottom of the screen, which inevitably causes one to miss details in the image. On top of that you will not be able to understand background dialogue or whenever two characters are speaking at the same time. Euros are so used to these things that they don't realize they are ruining their experience.
>>
>>79291928
What do you expect from a nation that thinks Dr Seuss is the height of literary achievement.
>>
americans are fucking retarded...
>>
Japs do it to our flicks as well. This is more of a creative bankruptcy thing than a "eww americunts won't watch foreign films". Recreate a flick that did well in another country and now you have one with a lower chance to fail while retaining all the shekels it makes.
>>
>>79295053

Remaking a movie ruins it far more.

Name 1 (one) straight up remake thats better than the original.
>>
>>79295141
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Scarface (it's debatable)
The Thing
The Fly

I'm sure there are more.
>>
>>79295141

>>
I watch all movies and shows with subtitles even if they're in English.
>>
>>79295323
You are the worst kind of person. If you ever acted this way in real life, everyone was cringing nearly to death around you. No one actually thinks you're a victim of things like this, it's basically like when a kid is fake crying and everyone knows it and you just roll your eyes over the blatant attention seeking, except you're an "adult."
>>
>>79295141

The purpose of a remake is not improving over the original, but adapting it, making it accessable to a different audience.
>>
>>79294891
>seeing words actually come out of people's mouths like in real life
This is the case with english. When you speak german, you don't use your lips that much, so it looks more random. Just watch a german movie and try to guess the sounds from the lip movement alone.
>>
will they keep in the scene where she eats a cum splatter fondant fancy?
>>
>>79292130

In reality subtitles are much more widely accepted here. Europe is where you find the worst fucking dubs because people are just unwilling to read subtitles. But of course you were just talking out of your ass so now you will say something to the effect of "no u"
>>
>>79291928
>According to a study conducted in late April by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Institute of Literacy, 32 million adults in the U.S. can't read. That's 14 percent of the population. 21 percent of adults in the U.S. read below a 5th grade level, and 19 percent of high school graduates can't read.

It's literally because some Americans can't read.
>>
>>79296623
When Imwent to visit my fiancé's family in Sweden we saw Lights Out and it was all in English with subtitles. Apparently most movies are in their native language.

The only annoying part was the two second pause between the lines finishing and reactions from the audience.

Germans are the worst offenders in dubbing everything, then perhaps France and Italy but almost nobody else ever dubs live action movies. Krauts are prone to getting extremely butthurt if you poke fun at them about this btw, claiming the dubs are superior and how they truly can't be expected to learn English etc.

I like to watch every movie with subtitles.

I'm so used to having the option when watching a blu-ray/DVD/rip that I don't really like going to movies anymore since sometimes there will be a scene that'll be low in audio or the actor will with have a weird accent and I won't be exactly sure what was said.

Kraut here.
Dubs are cancer in most cases.
Generally any medium should be enjoyed in its native form.
Obviously thats a problem if i want to read russian books, watch finnish movies or jerk of to jap cartoons, so you have to compromise occasionally.
