The season failed because the writers boxed the show in by presenting Glory as a god - they found two terrible escape hatches (the invention of Dawn as the Key and Buffy's self-sacrifice) - but it ruined the show.

Making matters worse, Dawn was a terrible character and Glory wasn't very good as a Big Bad.

Seasons 6 and 7 are very different from the rest, but not worse.
Whedon or someone else involved once said that the villain of season 6 is depression and that's pretty accurate. There's no major external threat. It's just the characters dealing with their accumulated personal shit poorly.

I don't think it's nostalgia, but more because comparing it to the tone of the rest of the show, it really stands out and made an impact on a lot of fans because of the contrast. Not every Buffy fan watched Stargate or every other show at that time so it really depends on what you mean by overrated. Not as good as "x" can be said about literally anything. The show was doing pretty good at the time and the fifth season had such a great cliffhanger ending that Joss thought renewal was a sure thing so he went to the execs and pushed them for their answer.

He alleged that his team deserved to know that they would have work on the coming months; however the executives told Joss they would tell him once they had decided on the grid.

When Joss pushed for a yes or no right there they told him "no" and that was it.
We lost Angel because he pushed too hard.
