>He did not like the movie Aliens. I thought it was fun, scary, cathartic; he thought it was needlessly violent and why must extraterrestrials be portrayed in such a negative light? He had mixed feelings about Star Wars. I remember watching it with him, and when we reached the part where Han Solo brags that the Millennium Falcon made the Kessel Run in "less than twelve parsecs," he made an exasperated sound. I asked him what was wrong, and he explained that a parsec is a unit of distance, not time. I said, "Dad, it's just a movie." He said, "Yes, but they can afford to get the science right." And I thought, yes. He's absolutely right. (What movies did he like? He was a big fan of David Lean epics like "Dr. Zhivago" and, especially, "Lawrence of Arabia." I remember how he loved that transition where Peter O'Toole blows out the match and we cut quite suddenly to the Nafud desert. It's such a powerful moment.)

Knowing preexistent laws and exercising trial and error doesn't make you wise.

I hate NDT so much. He is that one kid in class who thought he was better and smarter than everyone when all he did was just memorize a bunch of facts of Google to seem smart. Whenever anyone gets something wrong he'd snort under his breath and whenever someone got something he'd pipe up and say how HE would have gotten it right, or that they're technically incorrect because blah blah blah. Then he proceeds to bomb a test and says he's just a bad test taker. He'd hate on Harry Potter because "wtf magic isn't real this is stupid" and he'd hate on Star Wars because "wtf the force isn't real this is stupid"

NDT is a no-fun allowed douche

>We were a small college club with around 10 members and on a whim one of our members emailed tyson's agent to see if we could book him. We found out it would cost 40k (it raised to 50k in December of that year where I think it still might be) for his speaking fee plus expenses to have him come to our college for 1 day where he'd host a small lecture, a press meeting, dinner with up to 6 people, and the main lecture and a book signing time permitting. We decided to go for it, and spent a year where our club exclusively worked on bringing him in.

>When he arrived, myself and others introduced ourselves and our fields of study. He went after first of us in humanities or soft sciences pretty much relentlessly from the get go. We're all used to the philosophy major working at McDonald's joke, but he wasn't trying to be funny, and spent the ride from the airport making repeated comments about the uselessness of our majors. Additionally he spent about 5 minutes trying to show that logic was stupid but he was citing logical rules and Occam's razor.

>The small lecture was him bragging about how famous he was, and how easy it is to pull yourself out of poverty or etc. The dinner was for leaders of other clubs so helped us raise money. He took the piss out of how one student held her fork, and was impossibly smug when giving advice to physics students.

>The main event was a terribly boring lecture consisting of fart jokes and fan service; teasing the upcoming TV series he was in and not much else. He spent a quarter of the time reading Sagan's blue dot, which is nice but shouldn't have cost us because it wasn't his material.

>He left at about 2am, and we were all exhausted because we had spent the day busy setting up and tearing down. The whole affair cost nearly 85k. The additional money being for locations, personnel, air fare, Tyson's hotel, catering, etc.

>We all decided he was an ass hole. I'd never want to spend 16 hours with a celebrity again.

Take a look at modern type theory, set theory, or any modern high level mathematics and tell me it doesn't at least resemble abstract philosophy.
Theoretical computer science is like ~30% philosophy on its own

Some of the most recent advancements in deep learning, artificial intelligence and computer science make use of extreme abstraction which is essentially the same as construction with rudimentary philosophical concepts
Even if it's not hard philosophy, philosophical thinking is important in modern science

well as i said, someone needs to lay the groundwork and instill fervour in the rest of the people so that they don't waste time on philosophy, but instead just do the philosophy already laid out for them. any time spent on philosophising increases the likelihood of purposelessness and overthinking
it's also worth mentioning that your example sucks, a more apt one is that greece in general had philosophy while rome had sheer brute strength and nothing cultural to offer, and we know which one of those got a bigger slice of the pie, but that's what i mean, rome didn't have philosophy because they had people who laid it out for them with fictuous stories of how rome was founded. they engineered the identity of the roman to align perfectly with the pre-prepared philosophy, it really just showcases what i mean

I honestly don't know why I waste my time on this cesspool of retardation known as this board

You have to be intelligent to conduct actual science. The problem is today a lot of (((scientists))) are paid shills who just create whatever results they are told. They dont really follow the scientific method, but are more concerned about public approval and following the public narrative. A very good example of this is experiments that deal with race. There are no true scientists working in this field, only (((scientists))) who are actually sociology retards who claim "race is a construct" with no factual evidence (in before >>>/pol, just fucking look up actual studies and ask yourself the question why no modern studies are being conducted on this topic).

Neil de Grasse Tyson isnt even a (((scientist))). What articles of merit has he published? How has he improved his field of "expertise". He is a shitty, meme version of Carl Sagan, a glorified high school science teacher, the kind who uses movies and memes to promote (((science))) and that the plebs following "I FUCKING LOVE SCIENCE" on facebook has embraced as their leader.

This retard doesnt even know basic rules about capitalization yet portrays himself as a scientists. Embarassing. He wouldnt get an article published without someone else proof reading.

That's usually how that works, actually.

everything pre-empire was taken from somewhere else, everything afterwards was innovated from that foundation

Not true, the first credited authors of most studies are the ones who have constructed the study, chosen the methodology, delegated work, led the interpretation of data and done final proof reading.

Only if the main scientists are aware of their own short comings with language and grammar will they have someone else proof read (and the proof reader will often want co-credit in the article for their contribution, which is why most scientists who do actual ground breaking work dont want someone else proof reading).

>Not true
It is true. I've done (paid, but uncredited) pre-submission proof-readings myself.

Post link to one study. I refuse to believe its not some shitty doctorate work that has 0 citations.
