Because he's a method actor, and most method actors are intolerable douches that think they are better than other actors because they "become their character." Their smugness is exhausting.

Method actors aren't smug in nature, plenty of actors practice method acting. Leto is smug and exhausting, mainly because of his insecurities.

And plenty of actors are smug, most of Hollywood is smug. But method actors just give off this air if "I'm better than other actors because I commit more than anyone else by possibly endangering my life instead of just fucking acting." Method acting is a crutch that real talented actors do away with.
