Not to drop off the deep end, but who else thinks Trek is in big trouble because they're putting Discovery on CBS access in the US?

I'm 100% not buying it. I'll find a way to watch it (piracy being an absolute last resort) and that's it. They're putting it on netflix in other countries where they can't do this to people.

What are they saying to the fan base right now?

It should have just been a joint project between CBS and Netflix in the first place. Those executives are retarded.

I think you're right.

Progressive thought is natural, and doesn't really need action, protest or hostility. Millenials, or at least the ones we vilify are as such because they're impatient. So they attempt to force change rather than letting it happen. Instead of being pragmatic and allowing it, they create the opposite of their own action.

I mean, do people actually want to see the world of Star Trek come true? It doesn't come by cheering for Madonna.

Watch TOS, finish watching TNG, and watch DS9.

TNG has some Earthers who run a vineyard because it was a family tradition. They don't get paid for it, they just do it for fun.

DS9 has some Earthicans who run a restaurant because they enjoy cooking. They don't get paid for it, they just do it for fun.

All the Q episodes from TNG. All of TNG, DS9 parts of voyager.

>>
>>79188308
Basically it's a utopia where everybody gets everything for free and you only work if you want to, like a hobby, or out of a sense of obligation. Nobody "needs" to work. Everybody in Star Fleet is pretty much just either people who feel a sense of duty or who think it's cool to be a space explorer, or people who are scared that the Borg/Vulcans/Klingons are going to come and fuck Earth up the ass unless they sign up. The majority of humans on Earth spend all day doing whatever activities they enjoy, with free healthcare, free electricity, every home has a replicator in it, and you can teleport anyplace you want to go so traveling is simple.

Pretty much, the thing to understand about Earth in Startrek is that they effectively have an infinite amount of everything because of replicators. There is no scarcity. There's no reason to limit anything.

I see some people still view the world in terms of good and evil like when our parents would read us books before bed.

Arab princes are one small contingent of the ultra high income bracket of the world's tycoons and plutocrats.
Yeah some come from old rich families and many are self-made like Buffet, like Gates, like Jobs, like Cuban, like Jack Ma, etc. etc.
They were originally highly motivated to reach that level of success. Their ambition motivated them to find ideas to help further their net worth and reach such heights.
This world's economic system is very flawed but it's the closest thing to an advanced extension of mother nature.
In other words, when the bare necessities are all accounted for, you take away some piece of that innate drive that exists in Type A personalities, people who mentally and physically resilient, etc.

That's my soapbox about post-scarcity. I'm done.

it has nothing to do with good or evil.
it's simply to point that even if you have "everything" you can still be motivated to do things either for your own interest or for the interest of others

and while you named some people that raised above others the majority of people still have to struggle for normal basic things and not everyone has the opportunity to reach success anyway
and even so in Star Trek there's an entire galaxy and colonies with different cultures so if someone doesn't like the horrible earth society can always go be a Type A somewhere else or find a different career which isn't about making money

>Is it really worth eliminating poverty and hunger,

Do you really think half of the world is ready for that level of economic freedom?
Africa needs neutering at this point or it will explode like a bloated sac of spider eggs.
Indians still are growing way beyond their means. 1.7 billion and growing.
Indonesian is similar. Growing beyond it's means.

It's not as simple as waving the magic wand, there are consequences to free everything.

Like you remember the episode where teh holodeck returns to 1990s Detroit and the sentient mayor hologram gives the disadvantageous free replicators and the crime explodes?

My point exactly.

>Don't you understand? If we have infinite resources then we'll run out of resources!
Oh, of course, how silly of me.

>No, stupid! We've already achieved FTL travel and have colonies across the galaxy

Huh, I thought we only had this one planet to take care of with greenhouse gasses, carbon footprint, ecology equilibruim, etc.

with replicators space travel would become way easier

When post-scarcity fails, you'll need men of fiscal breeding....

So once we have FTL and colonies, it's fine?

You've abandoned your argument that the Star Trek universe would be a terrible place to be?

Good for you, you're finally living up to your statement of "I'm done."

also to quote Transformers 3: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few"

>You've abandoned your argument that the Star Trek universe would be a terrible place to be?

No, I swear this is it because I need sleep but it was a bit of an aside to point out that it's myopic and very hippy of you to think that there would not be disparity of cultures in post-scarcity.

My original argument was that it would be somewhat dreadful for some, at least for a period of time because economics and barter has been a part of humanity (except in ssAfrika) for thousands of years.
Added on top of that the inability of some races to live within their means in the here and now. Is there just an endless supply of new worlds for 13 new Jamals and their litter to go inhabit in the Federation? I mean that's REAL post-scarcity, an endless supply of M class planets.

We just assume Star Trek has all sorts of new worlds with similar gravity as ours, or that they can all be terraformed, that it'll all work out because of technomagick.

Right, of course, because we're so great at avoiding a disparity of cultures right now.

>My original argument was that it would be somewhat dreadful for some
Right. Your existential angst. It's so dreadful. You being bored is so much more dreadful than people dying due to lack of food and water. You poor thing. Why don't more people think about your needs? You are the center of the universe, after all.

It's Patrick Stewart by a mile. Meaney is a good actor though but Stewart has had a fantastic career in film and TV as well as the stage.

The episode where Barclay is given super intelligence by an alien probe has Troi going on a pity date with him at the end. Troi's a big enough whore to have gave him a pity bang right?
