No, this is exaggerated.

Hospitals have an assigned trauma level ranging from 1-4. Trauma level 1 is considered the most intensive and have a larger available staff of surgeons at all times and the resources to handle things ranging from gunshots to dismemberment and beyond.

So let's say this kid was brought into a trauma level 3 hospital. Here's how it would go down:

>kid would be brought to a bed
>they would try to access his situation
>simultaneously call for a transport to be arranged
>try their best to stabilize through bandages and other means
>once transport is ready, they'd haul him out
>immediately he would be transported to a trauma level 1 or any other level that matched his current situation

Hospitals can't turn their backs on individuals but they can refuse to treat them.

For instance, let's say you're a for-profit hospital who receives a patient from a car accident who doesn't have insurance. You can't just push him out the door and have him die. You can however stabilize him and transfer him to a neighboring nonprofit hospital. This is the case with Florida Hospital and Orlando Regional Medical Center for example.
>>
>>79175839
I forgot to mention there is a trauma level 5 but these are really small and only deal with very minor things so they transport almost everyone who has any serious trauma.
>>
>>79175516

>>
>Cop just carrying a kid around with an open wound instead of performing basic first aid on the scene initially

Or do cops not get issued IFAKs?
>>
>>79175548
I can't speak for all hospitals but most don't leave the bullet in nowadays from what I've seen. The biggest concern is that the bullet could trap bacteria into the wound if left inside and the patient could develop an anaerobic infection.

Furthermore, if you were to be shot in the gut, not only would they remove the bullet but they would open you up to make sure you don't have a perforated colon leaking shit into your insides or to see if you have organ damage.
>>
>>79175206

For any Yuropoors who think hospitals in the U.S will let you die or not save your life, you are completely wrong. There are laws in place that force emergency rooms to treat anyone who needs it. The ONLY thing they can do to you is fuck your credit with Medical Debt, and even then if you pay at least a penny towards it each month they legally can't do anything.
>>
>>79176689

a debt is when you agree to pay it back, and if you dont they can sue you or come take your property and I am pretty sure put you in jail for things like child support debts

so can you have that happen to you if you don't have insurance but got shot and a hospital saved you without you agreeing to anything because you were literally passed out?
>>
>>79176697
>Thinking anyone actually pays those amounts
lol
>>
>>79176485
>>79176520
>>79176621
You're exaggerating.

A for-profit hospital will NOT let you bleed out or die. If you come in unconscious with no wallet or anything saying you have insurance, they will still stabilize you. They will just not treat you. What I mean by this is that they won't have you sit in their hospital for five days getting all sorts of expensive care while you recover. Instead, they will stabilize you until you're in no harm by being transported to another hospital.

However, you probably would not even end up at a for-profit to begin with. Ambulatory services and police know which hospitals are level 1 or not and if they are nonprofit or not. They will preferentially send you to the right place so that you're not in this kind of position of having to move. However, sometimes people have bad shit happen where they need attention right away and then they do go to the for-profit where they are stabilized before being moved.
>>
>>79176755
>debt is what i say it means!
Dont ask questioms you wont accept the answer to faggot.
>>
>>79176756
I can see insurance has covered $11k of it, but they're still over a grand to pay, as well as that $40 baby holding fee kek.
>>
>>79175398
There are some hospitals that don't have emergency operating rooms.

This was/is an issue in Chicago where in spite of the fact there are so many shootings on the South Side, for a long time emergency services weren't required to take a victim to the nearest ER with an operating room. There's an ESPN 30 for 30 on how it used to be in the 80s when a high school prospect got shot and how he was taken to a place that couldn't do anything for him.
>>
>>79176770

I'm not exaggerating I just dont know, I know they wont let you die but it's the being charged after bit thats funny

do americans honestly carry around a card that says they have medical insurance like an ancap meme on /pol/?

and what do you mean by nonprofit? it's run by a charity or the state? why wouldnt absolutely everyone just go there then?

>>79176791

ok so tell me what happens since you're really smart if you dont pay it back, can they sue you or take your property like if you racked up credit card debt?
>>
>>79176837
>can they sue you or take your property like if you racked up credit card debt?
They send the account to a collection agency, who handles the legality from there.
>>
>>79176791

also the definition of debt is you agree to pay something back later, I can't save you from drowning and then say that'll be a thousand bucks if you didn't agree to it before hand
>>
>>79176837
>do americans honestly carry around a card that says they have medical insurance like an ancap meme on /pol/?

Yes they do.

If you want a good laugh at the American healthcare system I suggest sicko by Michael Moore. The preexisting condition stuff was actually nixed by Obamacare but this place is a joke in regards to coverage
>>
>>79176863

and then what do they do if you simply cant afford it?

what if you are a foreign national? can you just go home?
>>
>>79176837
>can they sue you or take your property like if you racked up credit card debt?
Yes. Theyll pass off your debt to collections which hits your credit and then collection will try to get money. If you dont pay them then they can sue. That leads to shit like wage garnishments.
>>
>>79176755
child support debt is the only debt you can be jailed for that even then it's for contempt of court for not following the courts orders, not the actual not paying
>>
>>79176892
>and then what do they do if you simply cant afford it?
Take you to court.
>what if you are a foreign national?
Nothing, unless they are able to circumvent jurisdiction.

Paramedic here, one, fuck niggers. Two, they would have controlled the bleeding and stabilized him by administering fluids before flying him to a hospital for vascular surgery if needed.
But shame on the cop for taking him to a bandaid station.
>>
>>79176447
>go to jail?
We don't have debtor's prison anon. A hospital can't refuse you treatment if your life is in danger. They'll do what they can to get you stable, then throw your ass back out on the street. Expect a big hospital bill to come in the mail, but the trick is not to pay it until they sell it off to a collections agency, which will settle with you for pennies on the dollar.
The trick is the severity of the injury or illness. If you show up to an ER with the flu and no insurance they're going to direct you to the nearest flee clinic. But if you're bleeding out or suffering from a serious trauma, they're going to do what they can to keep you alive.
>>
>>79176078
this is bullshit

a bullet is way too hot for any bacteria to survive on it

they don't that them out unless there a specific reason to do so, just do even five minutes of reading before spouting this utter bullshit
>>
>>79176837
Yes, medical insurance cards are a thing but they are usually just for the doctors office to have proof of your insurance so they can contact the company for payment. It's not a card that say anything like "DONT TREAT THIS FAG THEY ARE POOR"

Nonprofit hospitals and for-profit are just two different business models. For-profits are publically traded and have shareholders. Nonprofits usually have charities but also don't pay any taxes.

Because for-profit hospitals have investors, they can be more up to date. They will sometimes have better equipment, better surgeons, etc. It really depends but it can sometimes be that for-profits have more research centers or are more specialized. There are a lot of factors.

>>
What a lot of you don't understand is that hospital staffing is expensive. Imagine the level of expense if every single hospital was open 24/7, had surgeons on staff at all times, had a blood bank with enough units for a mass trauma scenario, and had enough nurses/techs/etc available.
>>
>>79177028
>If you show up to an ER with the flu and no insurance they're going to direct you to the nearest flee clinic.

Paramedic here, this is a lie. Hospitals are legally obligated to provide you with the necessary care, hence why they bill you afterward. County hospitals in big cities will often waive the bill if you meet the financial requirements, they even provide healthcare for illegal immigrants without documentation. If Americans understood the hundreds of billions illegals cost them in healthcare annually there would be riots.
>>
>>79176518
Untrue. They still have to give you emergency treatment even if you don't have insurance.

Hi, Dean.
>>
>>79175256
Every hospital is equipped to handle gunshots, at least to the point of stabilizing, stopping bloodloss, and with lesser cases removing the bullet, stapling veins and closing/sewing the wound.
Advanced cases, like multiple gunshot wounds, headshots, rifle wounds, partial or full limb loss due to gunshots are a different story. They won't turn a GSV away at the door, they treat, stabilize do what they can and then send off to a specialist/another hospital down the line if they have to.
Sucking chest wounds like that kid has are fairly basic tier, it would depend more on severity of exit wound and how long he's been injured

Dude go do PA school. You have tons of experience as a medic probably and you would probably make a good candidate. PA's originally were old army medics who had tons of medical knowledge but couldn't go to school for years and years to be a doctor. Look at the PA school near you at what undergrad prerequisites they require and go do it. Trust me you would thank me in the end.

At my hospital, PA's and NP's make six figures easy with some experience. You won't have that kind of autonomy and money as a nurse.

Some countries will cover up to a certain amount anyway, usually it's small. You will be advised to seek all follow on care in your home country.
If you say got shot, they would stabilize you and treat you (whether there or in another hospital) to the point where you can be released. You'll be in pain and get pain meds, they would advise you to seek follow on care/surgery/rehabilitation in your home country and would give you doctors letters/etc.
Basically the bare minimum to get you out the door, whether it be walking or on a wheelchair
>>

>>79177559

>nurse practitioner

What is this, you are not a doctor you don't have your own patients you just boss other nurses around? Steal meds that shit?
>>
>>79177749
Imagine a doctor as Batman and NPs as Robin.

We can prescribe, we can see patients, and we and treat patients. A percentage of our patient charts are then reviewed by the supervising doctor who can then counsel on what to do next. We have a Masters degree and usually have prior experience in the medical field. I personally worked as a nurse for 4 years before becoming an NP.
>>
>>79177728
>can't speak, can't complain, are unconscious

Nursing is fun but it's a fucking bitch some days. I haven't had as many ups and downs not as I did during a nurse. I think I maybe had more fun days at work as a nurse but I definitely had more shit days.
>>
>>79177665
Medical proffessionals wont, the idiots who make the rules in PD's are a different story. It's better to be on the line with a Paramedic anyway so you have somone to corroborate your statement/back you in court, and also so they know the TQ time and can walk you through further treatment. Sometimes a TQ isn't enough, a Paramedic can walk you through a pressure dressing/gauze as well - and he's jogging all this shit down
-quickclot/hemcon/gauze applied x time
-TQ applied x time at x limb
-pressure dressing/ITB/dressing applied at x time

If all of this comes to a head and the cop has to sit in front of a review board or god forbid in a court room now he has statements from a medical professional who advised him on the scene, as well as his partners testimony

While there isn't technically a debtor's prison, you're all forgetting:

Most good employers won't hire people with tens of thousands of dollars of outstanding debt, ESPECIALLY if it's in non-payment status.

yes the other day I suffered a severe laceration and the hospital told me I'd have to leave the state to get it sewed shut.
