I would say he's less of a side character and more of the type of protagonist who exists to move the plot forward. He's weird and he gets shit done, that's really the extent of his characterization. The meat of the show so far has been how the world reacts to him.

I just wait for him to do some real voodoo shit every episode, and end up disappointed. If this gets another season and they end up on a boat, I expect some supernatural shit to happen.
