Modern Russia cannot into filmmaking. In the USSR the state payed pretty much all the expenses, so people made movies for the art, now they just do it for the money. There wasn't a single big movie made in the last two decades that was made to deliver a message or realize a vision.

They don't become big, because the probability of you seeing them on TV/in major theater chains are next to none, because muh propaganda must be anywhere and no conflicting opinions are permitted.

These movies usually tour on festivals, are shown in select theaters in major cities, but they are not profitable at all.
