Pretty good. I like being known as the "get stuffed" anon. There have been two other occasions where I saw other people using the phrase, and I got a tiny bit jealous, but at least I'm not a tripfag.
And you?

Assume that Chinball shits the bed with Series 11 and now you've been appointed with taking charge of Series 12 (because you're fucking awesome). Also assume that for the time being you're short a team of writers and instead it's up to you to pen 13 episodes (but that's fine cause you don't fucking need them). Post the tiles to your thirteen episodes as well as anything else you'd like to include.

1. The Sea of Steel
>Cybermen decide to convert aquatic life as a suitable mass of expanding their empire and they decide to take their siege on land (inspired by Gyo by Junji Ito).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgMJbwR9MpY
2. Full House
3. The Dark Abyss Pt. 1
4. It Came from Beyond Time Pt. 2
5. Crossroads
6. Familiar Faces
>After a particularly difficult adventure, the Doctor revisits and old companion or two for a "one for the road adventure" and gets a range of unexpected reactions.
7. Tragedy on New Earth Pt. 1
8. The Return of the Horned Ones Pt. 2
9. Wrench In the Machine
10. Smooth Sailing
11. Tailor Made
12. The Forgotten Arsenal Pt. 1
>In the Time War the Time Lords had an arsenal of unthinkable weapons that could rewrite the fabric of reality. All of the arsenal were extinguished during the Last Great Time War but millenia later a second arsenal was discovered on a secluded asteroid belt and it's up to the Doctor to retrieve it before it falls into the wrong hands.
13. Sin Pt. 2

>But he had an MA in writing and a couple of plays by that point, I think.
Really? I'm 24 and only just starting my BA in writing this year. I'll be 27 by the time I finish it and won't have my own show.
>>
>>79149386
>I'm 24 and only just starting my BA in writing this year. I'll be 27 by the time I finish it and won't have my own show.
Maybe follow RTD. At your age, he was a college dropout and a washed out comic book artist begging for jobs writing or illustrating for Welsh kids' TV, but he had Dark Season… I think not quite as young as Moffat, but before he was 30.
>>
>>79149481
And at 25 Sarah Dollard was in the writer's room for Neighbours. I wish I hadn't wasted the last 6 years doing nothing.

I guess before 30 is the goal, but even that is quite ambitious, especially considering where I am in life at the moment.
>>
>>79149668
Don't worry so much about what happens before some magic age. The 35+ years after that point are a lot more important than the 6 before it, unless you're a one-hit wonder. RTD isn't remembered for doing Dark Season before 30, but for doing Queer as Folk and Doctor Who in his late 30s. And does anyone remember the first series Sydney Newman produced for Canadian TV (a hockey preseason report thing, I think)?
>>
>>79149893
Yeah, I know that but the early works helped them secure the later jobs. I'd love to work on some completely unimportant crappy show right now if I could, just for the experience and because it's a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

>I'd love to work on some completely unimportant crappy show
Yeah, that's good experience even if you don't get connections or an episode to your name out of it.

So, where are you going for your BA?
>>
>>79150321
It's just some Australian university. Not one of the well-known ones.

Our television industry isn't great, which doesn't help. But I think there are internships here and there.
>>
>>79150554
As long as they have a program focused on TV/film writing, not general creative writing. Even if it's crap, it's forcing you to spend years writing what you actually want to learn to write and listening to people tell you the parts that suck, and hopefully teaching you some of the business side of things, like how to pick the right agents to target and how to tailor your query letter to them.
>>
>>79150735
For my first year I'm majoring in both creative writing and film, and then I'll decide which one to continue as my major for next year. I get the feeling that neither are very focused on writing though, especially screenwriting. I think mostly I'll be analysing film/books, at least in my first year. But it's still better than nothing and I could always defer if I find a better program somewhere else.

I don't need to look it up because I don't have a terrible memory. You're probably referring to him being a co-writer. The showrunner basically cowrites everything, Moffat just started actually adding his name in recent years it seems.
>>
>>79155899
No, RTD always cowrote everything, but Moffat doesn't.

He only added his name in two episodes, because those are the only ones he cowrote.
>>
>>79155899
>Moffat as co-writer
>not a Moffat episode
Get stuffed desu.
>>
>>79155970
>RTD always cowrote everything
If by "cowrote" you mean "sent it back three times with extensive notes and then just rewrote the whole thing from scratch and, if there was time, asked the original writer for comments and then ignored them". I'm not sure why he even bothered commissioning other writers.
>>
>>79155970
>No, RTD always cowrote everything, but Moffat doesn't.
What makes you think this? Of course Moffat would tweak scenes, and especially dialogue. Maybe not the extent that RTD did, but there's a line in The Doctor's Wife that is lifted straight out of a previous Moffat show.

>>79155984
You get stuffed. They're obviously not Moffat episodes.
>>
>>79156276
>Of course Moffat would tweak scenes, and especially dialogue.
That doesn't count as cowriting.

Which is why Moffat didn't list himself as cowriter in the 6 episodes where that's all he did, but did list himself as the cowriter in the 2 episodes where he did a lot more than that.

Or do you think he just made that distinction because he thought Jamie Mathieson could handle it, Catherine Trigenna would cry, and Peter Harness could handle it half the time but would cry the other half?
>>
>>79156395
No, I think he probably got to the point where he'd rewritten a large enough chunk of it that he felt entitled to add his name. Where are you getting the "2" number from, btw? He starts doing it in S8, probably because he wrote the Danny scenes.

I do think some of them are a more traditional cowriting setup though. The Zygon episodes for example.
>>
>>79156446
The "2" and "6" number come from S9, where there were 4 episodes he wrote solo, 2 he cowrote, and 6 he didn't write.

Anyway, just adding a couple scenes, or rewriting a few lines of dialog, does not count as cowriting. Well, at least not by WGA guidelines; otherwise, every sitcom episode would have a dozen writers listed instead of one or two. I'm sure the BBC or WGGB or whatever rules are different, but it's probably not just "do whatever you feel like to your writers".

Also, for the Zygon episodes, the first is credited to Harness alone, only the second to Harness & Moffat. But it's possible it was a more traditional arrangement—maybe they worked together on it with the original intention of roughly splitting things one episode apiece, but a lot more of Harness's stuff ended up in the second half than originally expected, or something.

At any rate, whatever the distinction is, there clearly is a distinction that means something to Moffat between The Girl Who Died and, say, Mummy on the Orient Express, or the former wouldn't be credited to Mathieson & Moffat and the latter to Mathieson alone.
>>
>>79156545
>Anyway, just adding a couple scenes, or rewriting a few lines of dialog, does not count as cowriting. Well, at least not by WGA guidelines
That's a good point.

>At any rate, whatever the distinction is, there clearly is a distinction that means something to Moffat between The Girl Who Died and, say, Mummy on the Orient Express, or the former wouldn't be credited to Mathieson & Moffat and the latter to Mathieson alone.
My thought was that Moffat probably wrote the scene about Capaldi remembering his face, and a couple of other things, and that's what justified slapping his name on it.
>>
>>79156616
Again, I don't know UK rules, but I suspect it would take a lot more than that.

If it was just one thing, it would probably be something pretty big. Like maybe he hadn't decided that Me had to be one of the characters from the Viking episode until after Mathieson had submitted his draft, so he had to change Ashildr's character and beef up her scenes accordingly?

>>
>>79156715
When I started this conversation, I honestly forgot there were guidelines for these sorts of things. I knew about the rules when it comes to movie scripts, but hadn't thought about television before.

It probably helps that Moffat is the one who comes up with the story prompts. Like he'll tell them the basic setting and possibly plot. That would work in his favour if he wanted to attain credit, but yeah. I really don't know actually.
>>
>>79156795
Yeah, good point; Doctor Who is not like a sitcom, where the story ideas barely matter and usually come from someone in the writers' room.

But I don't think Moffat is grabbing as much credit as he can just to be a dick, or I'm sure he could have claimed a lot more than 2 episodes out of S9 for himself. He just doesn't bend over backward as far as RTD did.
>>
Wow, the closed caption subtitles for S9 really suck, like as bad as most American TV shows. Did the BBC lay off most of their captioning department between S8 and S9 or something?

Not a lot to talk about. We've been on break for well over a year. Capaldi's leaving (sad) but so is Moffat (good!*) Most of this has been known for a while if not quite formally announced.

The show is kind of stagnating. That's happened many times before but needs new writing to perk things up. That was the mistake with Capaldi-- a new doctor with the old writing team was just a new voice to say the same old things.

I wouldn't mind a female Doctor, but it has to be someone with larger-than-life acting chops. The only actress I can think of who could handle the role is Helena Bonham Carter (maybe w/ Neil Gaiman in the writing room?) Both would be slumming it since they're already very big names, but she could rock that role and catapult to the top tier of Doctors.

*Moffat was very good for a long time but direly outstayed his welcome. Especially once he got distracted by other ventures, but even before then his style was much less personal than RTD and that approach would have made Capaldi's Doctor far more engaging. I feel like we'll always wonder how 12 would have been with different/better writing than we got with Moffat at the end of his rope.

Also Moffat missed a great opportunity with the War Doctor. John Hurt did a fine job and RIP in peace he was great in the episode, but he was a one-off. Why not fix the OTHER one-off by bringing back Paul McGann? The swagger we saw from him in that webisode left me very hungry for more.

The idea that ancient creatures have been on earth, since the dawn of time, to protect Earth from solar flares isn't a bad one. Maybe just a bit too 'magical' for a sci-fi show, imo. Anyway, not a big fan of this particular episode, was reasonably entertaining but nothing special. Average, but not bad, low budget 'series filler' episode.

Should Doctor Who remain a 'family show' or become darker and scarier, also broadcast after 9pm in UK so that more adult themes can be explored?

Viewing figures fall slightly because parents feel the show has become too adult, but the core fan base keep watching and appreciation index goes up?

I'd love that.

I'm going to rewatch Listen.

First time I've seen I thought it was okay, but nothing special.
I was convinced that people just wanted Capaldi to have something outstanding in his first run, and just imagined things and imagined Listen being outstanding and 'classic' for not being dissapointed.

I have clear mind now, I've rewatched Hell Bent . Hated it for the first time, I enjoyed it more when rewatching, but it is still nowhere close to great finale.

Let's see how my opinion on Listen will change.

Drama shows in the UK broadcast after 9pm have lower than expected viewing figures. The BBC, being a public service broadcaster, considers AI figures crucially important for 'niche' shows like DW, often more important than viewing figures. Keeping the 'fans' happy is paramount.
>>
>>79169022
Broadcast Doctor Who at 9pm and watch it die. The Capaldi era has already been criticised for being 'too dark' with quite frankly tame plots such as Dark Water.
>>
I've rewatched Listen.

It would be sertainly better in black and white.
The main thing I hate about it - it's a Clara Who story. Clara made the Doctor who he is. I hate that. This needed to stop long ago.

It was good though.
I have a feeling that it was oddly paced and doesn't really make you follow an episode with your mouth open like Blink.
Or most episodes.
If you think about it, it's really badly paced.

The idea is clever and Capaldi has some insanely good lines.

But still, I don't think it's a all-time-classics. It's a clever episode which suffered from Clara Who influence and lack of "adventure".

Only the Monstrous was a fantastic collection of short stories. The first story was a comfy war story where the Doctor is presumed dead and he chills on a planet that the war has not reached yet.

The second "episode" involves the Doctor having to come behind enemy lines to rescue a Timelord taken captive by the Daleks and during the operation things to not go as planned.

The Doctor attempts to resolve the Keska situation building on the events of the prior two episodes culminating in a satisfying ending that sets the stage for the next set up audios.

VOLUME 2 IS INFINITELY BETTER THOUGH!!!!

Deep Breath - 6/10
Into the Dalek - 5/10
Robot of Sherwood - 7/10 (its fun, literally fuck haters)
Listen - 6/10 for cinematography
Time Heist - 7/10
The Caretaker - 5.5/10 (not sure why I didnt like this)
Kill The Moon - 4/10 (I liked Capaldi's performance in this alot)
Mummy on the Orient express - 8.5/10 (it's really fun and great and clever enough)
Flatline - 7.5/10
In the Forest of the Night - 3.5/10 (reminded me of Fear Her for some reason)
Dark Water - 8/10 great opener
Death in Heaven - 4/10 mess of a story. points for Missy and Capaldi performance, the story MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL

I'm looking forward to series 10 though.

Listen - 9/10 (Stellar episode)
Time Heist - 7/10 (rolicking good adventure)
The Caretaker - 7/10 (very comfy episode)
Kill the Moon - 4/10 yeah I hated this one.
Mummy on the Orient Express - 8/10

My S9 rankings. I absolutely loved Capaldi in this, it was pretty good.

The Magicians Apprentice/The Witches Familiar 8/10 (Great opener when watched together as a movie. Capaldi and Bleach are fantastic. Gomez and Jenna are also fun. People should rewatch as when it's watched separately with a week in between its meh.)

Under The Lake/Before The Flood 7/10 (It was good, but not great. Villain being underwritten and generic ruins it. Waste of a great design too.)

The Girl Who Died 7/10 (its fun, literally fuck haters)

The Woman Who Lived 5/10

The Zygon Invasion/The Zygon Inversion 8/10

Sleep No More 4/10 (fuck off gatiss)

Face The Raven 9/10

Heaven Sent 10/10 (Literally the best episode of NuWho)

Hell Bent 8/10 (One of the better finales. Capaldi was GOAT as a villain. It's better after the hype has died down)
>>
My series 7 ranking.

Asylum of the Daleks - 6/10. Daleks parliament is shit. Daleks asylum is unbelieveble. Dalek humans are worst design and idea to ever invented. Amy/Rory story is forced and dull.
It still somehow delivers though. Needs rewatching.

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship - 6.5 or 7. Can't decide. I dont remember much of an actual story, Solomon isnt impressive villain, story isnt catchy, but this episode has some brilliant parts: Rory's dad for example. Was it Moff's idea to finally develop family background or Chibnall's?

A town called Mercy - 5.5/10. Forgettable. Didn't impress me at all.

The Power of Three. 6.5 I absolutely hated it the first time. Clever idea was ruined so terribly it hurts. But after a rewatch... I realised it was a good sitcom episode and we've had some developement (Chib's episode again). But I cant let go shit ending anyway.

The Angels take Manhattan. - 5.5/10
Call me autistic, call me whatever you want. If the teaser is the dullest bullshit (HAHA STATUE OF LIBERTY IS ANGEL) I cant keep watching episode with a clear mind. I dont like angels in this episode. I cant remember being impressed or scared or anything. River Song wasnt very annoying, I think.
But the ending sucks ass. It's shit. Terrible farewall. It's bad.

Snowmen - 6 rewatched it recently. It's alright? Maybe. Still not very impressed not hooked to care about great intellegence who was le generic enemy mastermind in this interpretation.

The Bells of Saint John - 4/10 I have no idea what people like about this episode. Lack of ideas. Have never had ANY urge to rewatch this.

The Rings of Akhaten - 5.5/10 Speech touched me. If we talk about actual storytelling and logics, one End of the World is worth ten "Rings" of value

Cold War - 6/10 Cant remember anything. I only remember I wasnt that dissapointed this time.
Hide - 7/10 It was fine. No urge to rewatch tho.

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS - 7/10. People said its bad back in a day, it was KIND OF fun though.

>"The Highest Science" and "Tragedy Day" are the working titles for episodes 11 & 12 according to a Gallifrey Base spoilerhound.
You forgot to include "The Well-Mannered War", "Zamper", and all the other Gareth novel titles which are always included in this joke leak.

Also, the Doctor gets a new companion who will stick around through series 11, and she's a Chelonian colonel.

There wouldn't have been one if Capaldi stayed, which was the original plan.

A couple of episodes in series 11 will have been written for Capaldi, like how The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone was a Tennant script.
>>
>>79174404
To be fair, Chibs may have genuinely been concentrating on Broadchurch 3, then plans to give DW s11 his full attention after that work is finished. Incl the 13th Doctor search.

The whole arc of S5 was planned with Tennant in mind.
Chibnall by his own admission hasn't started working on S11 yet, so I doubt he'll write any of it with Capaldi in mind.

>>79174467
He got either £400K or £500K for S2; his final salary was £1M. And those numbers come from the Telegraph, not a tabloid.

I doubt they hiked his salary without him asking, although I suppose it's not impossible. I'm guessing he asked when the Jonathan Ross deal went public and it was obvious that the BBC were willing to negotiate.

>writer's room
Has Chibnall actually said this?

The way Chibnall changed the writing for Torchwood S2 was to put the script editor back in the flow, like 80s BBC shows had. Which is nice (might be better with a real script editor instead of a guy who edits fanzines and directs audio plays…), but it's not at all the same as an modern (or, if you don't like it, American-style) writers-room setup.

Plus, didn't Capaldi just say that S10 was Moffat "completely rebooting the show"? Even Spidey and Batman don't get two reboots less than 18 months apart…

Also "less darkness" and the scripts being more episodic and less arc-focused, and episode 1 being written to feel like the start of a completely new series that you can get into without any prior knowledge.

Honestly, sounds absolutely SHEEP. The trailer look good too
>>
>>79177913
>Honestly, sounds absolutely SHEEP.
Remember that S6, S7, and S9 were all promised to be less dark and less arc-driven, and it really wasn't true. Not that I'm complaining if Moffat lies and delivers another S9, just that I don't take his year-in-advance descriptions (especially when they're second-hand from one of the actors or other writers) to mean that much.
>>
>>79178076
S9 was sort of true. They rambled on about the Hybrid a lot but they didn't have scenes completely unrelated to the story slapped in the middle of the episodes like with S8 and other series.

But yeah, I know not to set my expectation too high.
>>
>>79177842
I'm hardly expecting an outing like the eleventh hour given his previous episodes.

But who knows?

Apparently not even chinballs cos he hasn't fucking started
>>
>>79178287
>They rambled on about the Hybrid a lot but they didn't have scenes completely unrelated to the story slapped in the middle
Well, Ashildr appears in 5 out of 12 episodes, and her story is connected to a bunch of other stuff. It's a lot better than the usual "tack on unrelated scenes" stuff, but that just means it's a better-done arc story, not that it isn't one.

I suspect Moffat wasn't even really lying this time, he just changed his mind. Probably all he planned for the S9 arc was occasional mentions of the Hybrid and the confession disc, but then he liked The Woman Who Lived too much to resist expanding on the character, and it turned into Moffat being Moffat again.

But again, I'm not complaining; I really liked S9. I'm just saying a second-hand quote from more than a year before S10 may not tell us much about what S10 will really be like.

Oh yeah, I forgot about her. It felt less intrusive because they did the arc in a more natural way. Still, I'd like to see at least one series that has no story arc at all. I have no idea why anybody believed Doctor Who of all shows was a suitable one for story arcs.
>>
>>79177767
>episode 1 being written to feel like the start of a completely new series that you can get into without any prior knowledge
He said that about The Impossible Astronaut, and it really wasn't nearly as good a fresh start as The Eleventh Hour. That's why they needed that whole Amy intro for the world market.

For that matter, Time and the Rani, the TV Movie, and Rose were also pitched as fresh starts, and only one of those was good.
>>
>>79172723
Tell that to William Hartnell
>>
>>79178994
>He said that about The Impossible Astronaut
Did he really? His idea of "fresh start" is very convoluted, then. Honestly it's for the best anyway. It would be a bit of a dick move to make S10 a total "reboot" or whatever they're calling it, when the Chibnall era is just around the corner.
>>
>>79178970
>It felt less intrusive
Moffat keeps getting better at doing arcs naturally when he's actually trying to stop doing them altogether…

>I have no idea why anybody believed Doctor Who of all shows was a suitable one for story arcs.
Because all SF/F shows from after 1989 have them. Because Buffy and X-Files were two of the shows RTD mentioned in his pitch, and he got the show brought back while Cornell and Gatiss and others didn't. Because RTD convinced the press that the reason everyone was talking about Doctor Who was Bad Wolf rather than the stories themselves, so every season had to have something even bigger than the last one.

By the time Moffat took over, critics were writing about nothing but how binge-watching is starting to change everything, which can't have helped…
