I'm a Hayley fan, but I don't think she's really at the level of being a major Hollywood star. She has a supporting role in one big budget Hollywood movie that's a little over 5 years old now. And now that her recent US show is cancelled, she's back in England and probably looking for work over there. I can't say for sure, but I really don't think she'd view something as iconic as Doctor Who as being "underneath" her, so to speak, unless she lucks out and lands a career-making project between now and whenever the new Doctor is announced.

Yeah, I'm a huge Hayley fan and even I forgot about her 5-minute part in Cinderella, which, according to my young nieces, isn't even a good Disney movie.

I can't figure out if her lack of a big breakout role is due to shit luck, a shit agent, or some combination of factors. She's ridiculously hot (yet still adored by lots of female fans, unlike some actresses that are highly regarded by men as being God-tier attractive), talented, charismatic, classically trained, etc. I hope she gets cast in something worth her time soon, even if it's not Doctor Who. I'm also fairly certain she wouldn't turn down a role like the Doctor unless she miraculously had a really, truly amazing project lined up. I don't think she'll get another American TV project any time soon, but I suppose there's a chance she'd like to get back into more movies or theatre...

I think it's just bad luck. And not that uncommonly bad. I mean, she got her vehicle show, and it got on the air, which is more than most people get. But, like 90% of the shows that make it that far, it didn't have a good enough concept or good enough writers to rise above the herd despite having a good star. So it goes.

Meanwhile, she's now in her mid-30s, which is probably too late to become a sex symbol from Hollywood's point of view.

Most likely, he doesn't think Chibnall's ideas are crap, or amazing. It's not like he had no reasons at all to leave and then suddenly decided fuck it, I'm out. He liked working with the current crew, he wants the best chance to go out on a high note and knows Moffat will give his finale everything he's got, he worries about being blamed for the bad ratings, he wants to find other roles before he gets too old, etc. Sure, he sounded super-positive right up until he announced he was leaving, but that just means he's a professional actor—they always sound super-positive in public about anything they're going to do, it's part of their job.

If he would have stayed if Chibs' ideas were 9/10 but they were only 8/10, that would sound exactly the same as what we've heard.

I'm okay with this. I'd rather see her take parts that allow her to show off her acting skill rather than just her looks (don't get me wrong, I appreciate her looks... Like, a LOT). Would be nice if she could get a role that earned her a few big award nominations to get her name out there a bit more. Her last big one I can recall was a Golden Globe nom 6 or 7 years back for Pillars of the Earth, but that was pre-Marvel so nobody except some Brits really knew who she was back then.

Alternatively, a more fun role like the Doctor would have the benefit of exposing her to a large international audience. Kind of like Peggy Carter, but on (I think) a bigger scale. In fact, her ability to play Peggy on screen and also handle the Marvel fans is a large part of why I can imagine her playing a good Doctor.
