I have no clue what this was about. Anyone else had a similar experience?

How do you mean "about" like the ostensible plot, or the themes?
Thompson is hired to cover a race but takes a lot of drugs instead. It's partially about the end of the generation of drugs being seen as mind expanding and freeing and hopeful and stuff into a darker more sinister nihilistic abuse and dread.

The journey is the destination.

There's not much to get. It's just about a guy who goes to Vegas for work and does a bunch of drugs instead of working.
i didnt' get this movie the first time I saw it either
of course back then I didn't do drugs
after I tried taking drugs, this movie made a lot more sense
>The story follows its protagonist, Raoul Duke, and his attorney, Dr. Gonzo, as they descend on Las Vegas to chase the American Dream through a drug-induced haze, all the while ruminating on the failure of the 1960s countercultural movement.
how was it a failure?
Closest I had was going to Mexico with my friend, getting stoned and going to a cathouse with some mexican nutjob at 4 in the morning.
It's about consuming too much drugs.
And personally I thight it also trys to show people, especially psychs, are not spiritual and nothing more than cheial reactions in your brain, like they are.

It's about how Hunter S Thompson gave birth to the modern media and journalism by just taking drugs and making up stories he thought sounded good instead of doing any actual real work.

The hippy/counter-culture movement thought they had found a new way of life the whole of humanity was going to adopt.
They thought they were going to change the world and save it.
from what i understand you shouldn't have watched the movie sober and understand it but consume drugs and have fun mindless instead.
