Not remotely, are you baiting me or something? I'm wondering if you guys have actually even read the Catcher in the Rye. Salinger's own words on why he never sold the film rights:

>...the weight of the book is in the narrator's voice, the non-stop peculiarities of it, his personal, extremely discriminating attitude to his reader-listener, his asides about gasoline rainbows in street puddles, his philosophy or way of looking at cowhide suitcases and empty toothpaste cartons... He can't legitimately be separated from his own first person technique.

he goes on but that's it in a nutshell. There are some things you can do well in a novel but not in a film, and vice-versa. It just so happens that 90% of the actual content in Catcher in the Rye falls into that category.

Gardens of the Moon could be adapted, but think about how plot hooks and characters are in it for future books. You'd have to axe so much of it the movie would be unrecognizable. Which is funny because Erikson originally pitched Malazan as a movie script so maybe he still has it somewhere.

The fact that it isn't "genre fare." It may very well be one of the most important book ever written.

This description is going to sound weird, but imagine if The Bible was written 10 million years in the future by an evil man who became Jesus by way of time travel to appeal to God to spare the planet from destruction. That's the basic plot, but everything else in the book is nearly indescribable. There were times when I would read a paragraph, not know what the hell Wolfe wrote, read it again, then stare out my window trying to expand my mind enough to be able to comprehend his words. It's a tough read, but it's worth it.

>The Increate maintains all things in order surely; and the theologicans say light is his shadow. Must it not be then that in darkness order grows ever less? [...] Perhaps when night closes our eyes there is less order than we believe. Perhaps, indeed, it is this lack of order we perceive as darkness, a randomization of the waves of energy (like the sea), the fields of energy (like a farm) that appear to our deluded eyes—set by light in an order of which they themselves are incapable—to be the real world.

I really hope he goes much further than Quixote's adventure with the windmills, like everyone seems to think the entire story revolves around. That part is like 50 pages into a 900 page book.

is this series worth reading?

This looks like the kind of thing you would buy in a CVS or one of those train station book shops. What exactly is unfilmable about it?
>>
>>79133581

Yes but if you don't appreciate abstractness then you won't like it.

I think Catcher could've made a good John Hughes movie, he seems like he would've captured Holden's existentialist angst pretty well going by his other movies with similar themes.

That would probably be one of the easier Lovecraft stories to adapt. Since it doesn't have any "indescribable horror you just couldn't comprehend it you poor human".

Pic related for on topic.

But it's essentially his autobiography and general complaints. So you could technically film it by having it like this

>Hitler writing down
>This is why Jews are bad....
>Fade to a scene which highlights why they're bad
>Back to Hitler
>This is why the Treaty of Versailles was retarded
>Shows scenes, like, I dunno, poor people, mass inflation and so on
>This is why we have to bring back German national pride

etc. Just have him in the prison sell writing it.

I know they did make a movie and it's not terrible or anything, but the vast majority of this book takes place in his head or is a discussion of political ideas and ideas about human society. The plot and the parts that can be filmed are the least important and interesting part of the book. You either read it or you really don't get it.

It'd get too many Harry Potter comparisons. Then again everything with the Uni was pretty boring except the mystery of the door. How is the sequel?

excellent, i'd hold off reading it (after re-reading the original) until the last book is released. at this rate it should be out sometime within the next century.

this is the series that proves the rule 'never read an unfinished fantasy series'.

oh wait

It's been almost-made a million times. What I think would be the real problem is keeping the same steady build of insanity going in a modern setting that is already way more absurd than the book. It would have to start crazy and end gore-porn-tier insanity.

They're going to fucking ruin it

The film HAS to be NC-17

We need to see the scenes of them massacring the village and the babies as described in the book, which they will never do.

The Judge needs to be created using makeup and facial prosthetic, he's supposed to look unworldly. They're going to go the lazy route and just have the guy portraying the judge shave his head and be plastered in white.

If done correctly it could seriously be one of cinema's greatest masterpieces but knowing Hollywood they'll find a way to fuck it up

That's because it's just plain low quality. It's alright in wish-fulfillment, Mary Sue way, but the actual story is just not very good. Kvothe is a shitty character, as interesting as Rei, I'm here at everything than the original cast. Every encounter is solved by perfect luck, or Kvothe's uncanny ability to be "awesome" under pressure. Don't get me started on the unreliable narrator copout that Rothfus totally planned.

This would be like a 50/50 chance of working as a film.

If the film gets it right it would be great but if it doesn't work I can see a godawful film being made.
