It's the most self-indulgent of Refn's films. Which is saying a lot in the scope of his filmography. Drive's popularity was the reason he decided to make something less accessible, and an even bigger distillation of his typical themes than his films usually are.

The director's commentary is pretty insightful, if you can hack his godawful snotty accent
