Kitano's 90s crime films are really fascinating, not just as great films but the way his criticisms and contemplations evolve from genre (Violent Cop) to the audience (Boiling Point), to himself (Sonatine) and then art and life(Hana-bi). I can't think of films that feel more therapeutic to their author as his early ones
