Producers generally look at the "big picture" of a production and make sure it has certain elements that the studio demands to satisfy certain demographics or keep the investors happy. They have a tendency to shit things up when they don't have a close emotional commitment to the project and are only satisfying a checklist. Many times nepotism and hollywood elitism result in random people getting attached as producer credits to a film just to keep the money swirling around the private club.

Imagine a director as a painter and the producer as the art gallery owner telling him what to paint if he wants to keep showing his pictures.
