>somehow the chinese general knows to give his number to her and tell her his wife' s dying words
how?

>she decides to have a kid, knowing it will die.
seriously?

inb4 she had no choice, she would have had a kid anyways
how does that make sense?
>>
You should really stick to capeshit. Nobody has the time to hold your hand
>>
>>79082767
How could she possibly have not remembered she called the chinese general and told him his wife's dying words if it had happened? If that were true wouldn't it prevent that whole UN ball from even happening?
>>
>>79082844
She skipped to that moment from the moment she was currently living
>>
Because predestination
>>
>>79082767
>not creating a life, even knowing it will end quickly and cause you pain
That's just dumb and selfish.
And obviously she chose that, no one is saying she didn't have a choice
>>
>>79082840
>i don't want to seem stupid so i pretend that the movie was amazing and intelligent and you have to be stupid to not get it
>>
>>79082767

She was learning to remember the future. You can't use a memory that you don't remember existing. So once she realized she was really seeing the future, and that she could remember things before they happened, she looked to see how she got out of that situation with the phone call.
>>
Maybe it should have been a comic. Seems a waste of millions of dollars to make a film like this.
>>
>>79082896
So when that moment happens can you really believe she is going to act the same way?
>>
>american woman randomly calls you on your private number and tells you your wife's last words
>she becomes famous, writes a book about the whole "seeing all of time at the same time"
>you read it because she single-handedly averted a crisis
>you realize that you need to tell her these random things so that she can call you "in the past"

In case it wasn't clear enough, you can tell by how the Chinese general is acting that he is saying this with the explicit goal of helping her. Its not like people will just randomly come up to you and tell you your private number from four years ago as well as your wife's last words
>>
Why didn't the aliens simply learn English?
>>
i can't tell if this is b8
it's not a difficult movie to follow
>>
>>79082958
How could she have a choice when she was just "remembering" the future?

This was not well thought-out, I'd prefer for people to stop acting like it was. The movie was gorgeous, easy to watch, and interesting, but it had major flaws in the plot/theme/philosophy/whatever the fuck department
>>
>>79083028
>can't answer any of the questions in the OP
>is this b8?
>>
>>79083028
>not a difficult movie to follow
>/tv/ can't follow it at all
really makes you think
>>
>>79083050
Because knowing your kid will die might make you want to re-think having a kid.

People overplay the whole fate/predestination thing in this movie, saying that she was going to have the kid no matter what. She clearly choses to have it because she thinks that the positives will outweigh the negatives, despite what Jeremy Renner thinks
>>
>>79082767
The book explains it better, basically the point knowing your fate makes you a slave to it, choice is illusion etc.

Also I think it's implied the General knows the Heptapod written language.

>>79083022
In the book the Military tell the characters not to teach the aliens English basically out of fear of giving them too much information about humans.

>>79083135
Not quite, basically the book is a bit more explicit and literally has a line like "Those that have read the book of secrets (seen the future) will not act against it for fear of what it might mean"
>>
Minority Report of all movies showed that humans have free will even when they know the future. She could have chosen not to have the kid.
>>
Just watched this piece of shit.

Why did they focus so much on Louise's future life? Nobody gives a fuck. You have this interesting flick that raises fascinating questions such as how would we communicate with aliens that have no similarities to humans and this dumb cunt keeps shoving in memories of her playing with her genetically defect kid in between everything. It's like having a conversation about quantum physics with your bros and this stupid vapid attention whore comes in and keeps trying to steer the conversation to make it about her life. Like, would you please fuck off

They also made this huge deal about the aliens sharing a gift of 12 parts that need to be put together in order to be complete, but as soon as the humans start getting their shit together and collaborate, the aliens vanish and the "gift" is never mentioned again.
>>
>>79082767
The chinese general was very intelligent. He deduced that the only way this could have happened was if he told her these things, though he admitted to her he didn't understand how it works.

The linguist realized that her future child sparked an idea that led to her understanding of the alien language which saved the world from some unforeseen consequence of humanity not learning this language. She also accepted that the few short years of life and love spent with her child were greater than if it never existed.
>>
>>79083135
you're not understanding.
She "remembered" a moment in time ahead of the present. In other words, this event is what WILL happen in the future.
So as soon as she saw the future, she had no choice in any of the events leading up to the moment that she remembered. Because if she did, then something different would happen, meaning that she "remembered" something that didn't happen. Which would be impossible, because she knows that it DID happen, and that's why she remembered it.
>>
>>79083265
>I missed literally the entire point of the movie.
>>
>>79083265
really I was kinda disappointed in how it went from a straight-forward "how do we communicate with aliens" flick into an unwieldy "seeing all of time at the same time"

It doesnt even segway between the two that well if you think about it, since it applies the theory that "language affects how you perceive the world" and gives it steroids. It doesnt make much sense how understanding a bunch of circular symbols allows my brain to transcend time and space
>>
>she decides to have a kid, knowing it will die.

In the end she's having a cryisis and patronizingly asking the audience if it's worth living life having seen it all, and knowing she won't be able to change it. Every person I know who loved this tells me that the whole movie is about this and won't accept an argument it so I guess it's about that

Movie is nice/10. I enjoyed it more for the ideas.
It got me into Ted Chiang (the author of the story the movie is based on).
If youre a reader check out some of his stuff - most of it is short-stories so theeyre easily digestable. Start with "Liking What You See: A Documentary" (for no other reason than it was the one I started with).
He does sci-fi really well and grounded. Even his fantasy seems more like sci-fi because of how he explains the mechanics of how that fantasy world would work.

Heres a collection of most of his stuff.

the "paradox" isnt a pardox, it's just a out-of-time transmission of information.
learning the language you gain the ability to see the entire path of your life (and automatically pick the """best""" one?) basically losing free will but free will is a time-based concept anyways.

my main questions/gripes with the film is
>the "best outcome" timeline she placed into seems an awful lot like it's the best not for her but for the world/universe/whatever which means only time-based creatures have self-preservation based free will while those that learn the language have a communal free will shared with the universe... so un-american

by requesting the aid of Humies? When there are infinite timelines, there conveniently isn't one where they can solve the problems without thousands of light years of travel and depends on the commitment and benevolence of a race that tried to wipe istelf out multiple times?

By sending 12 spaceships to scare all humies when they knew that they just needed one humie who had the Power(tm) ? Or did they know what happened in 3000 years but didn't know exactly what humie they needed? Are they oracles that can't predict the future specifically therefore they can't know exactly what will happen or which humie they need so they need to attract the attention of all humies?

That makes a lot of sense. In fact I feel like I just fixed the movie a little. But if it works that way, then why does she know EXACTLY what to do, what will happen and how it will happen?
>>
>>79085457
>>79085506
to be more explanatory.
spreading the language spreads that prophetic way of living.... humans having self-prevation free will at some point lead to something terrible... they're saving themselves by recruiting humans into their socialist cabal.

you're not getting it. everyone who learns the language gains "the power".

>all the idiotic tropes and obligatory retarded MC
Yeah that's annoying as fuck but you'd end up with a completely different show if you removed it.
Perspective would change, how they reveal characters would change, the whole pacing would be different because you don't have comic relief.

You'd end up with something like psycho-pass or Dimension W, which is hard to call the same show, but that would've been pretty good, yeah.
>>
>>79084738

good/10

It's a nice sci-fi flick with some very good directing here and there. They work a little bit too hard to make sure the audience "gets" it sometimes, but it's good.

This post seriously has to be bait. No one is this stupid.

Those weren't memories, they were glimpses into the future. As she learned the language she began to have more intense visions, eventually leading to a full understanding and full knowledge of what was going to happen.
