Outside of catching the occasional random post about an old movie on /tv/ before it dies in an hour, there's really nothing similar on the internet. It's just endless discussion of the same 25 movies.

The chumps at the top have been worrying for generations about publicity concerns compounded by the cost incurred to police communal discussion areas.

Microsoft operated a global hub of live irc style chatrooms until the early 2000s when they began to phase them out. Too many stories about children being preyed upon or angry parents contacting Microsoft and the media with stories about the horrible filth their children had been exposed to on the website of such a major organisation.

But it's definitely becoming more commonplace in the new era of the web, but it's also true that there are more websites and communities than ever before online. As much as has fallen, much much more has been added. We have VPN stacks, multiple stage encryption, onion, blockchains, Wi-Fi and smartphones now. Technology will continue to empower both individuals AND governments and institutions.

They can't stop us, and believe me, they ARE trying.
>>
why do many people like this movie? i just don't get it?

it wasn't even scary?
>>
>>79069304
Exactly. Seeing people's random comments, hell, even checking out the obvious shills from people who made the movie, was what made the site great.

>>79069273
>other news outlets already act as a form of peer review

>>
>>79069304
Oy vey, you're saying you want to find out more information from individuals that have not peer-reviewed and fact-checked their claims? That could be fake news you're reading, goyim! Only an ignorant alt-right nazi would complain of not being able to read potential lies!

You should read the reviews at rotten tomatoes from experts, and make sure you only watch recent movies or the ones in our catalogs. Don't stray too far from our prescribed films goy, you don't want to look like a social outcast, do you?
>>
>>79069151
Yep, and absolutely nothing will ever be able to replace that

it's a shit decision made with millennial cunts in mind, the sort of people who are only interested in rating a movie or posting an inane emoji and not actually discussing it. see: letterboxd

Nobody is using any of that bullshit. The "powers that be" don't give a shit what 10 neckbeards are circlejerking about on a BBS, they're achieving their goal to make sure the multitudes never hear a single word about it.

This isn't true at all. Literally everything is being centralised to garbage social media sites where you actually can't have proper discussions. How can you not see this? It's what IMDB have done, it's why comments sections on pratically every major newspaper and blog have disappeared. Things are getting worse and worse.

Why do you think IG, snapchat and twitter are so popular now? They are so fucking inane and boring. Literally the most spurious tweets or pictures that convey nothing, and yet they are more popular than ever. Traditional forums have all but died out. How can you not see this as a problem?

This. Controlling the the flow of information and forming the narrative in one-way communication to the masses is what has kept the elites in power. The Internet is a threat to that which is why they are doing everything in their power to control it. This is why you can have literal child porn on twitter but you get instabanned if you criticize immigration.

For it (embodied in large corporations) to expand, it must eat EVERYTHING (including small corporations and individuals), and when it eats everything, it must eat the commons and find new ways to privatize previously public goods, services, including culture, communications, public space, people's thoughts, feelings, etc.

Didn't something look suspicious to you when you realized that you can't even just "go outside" without stepping in someone else's private space with an entry fee consisting of either money or rules you must follow while being there, and "meet people" without going through some kind of a privatized corporate entity that usurped normal communication? That's not even mentioning culture or ideology, both of which have been stolen from the people, repackaged, and sold back to them in such a way that they must be glad for the privilege of having it... or else.

>I think it died out but a few years ago the comments section of Passio of the Christ had a dedicated group of atheists and Jesus-freaks who argued on there and they had meetups and actually spent time with each other. Some of them even coupled up and probably got married. It was the weirdest corner of the internet I've ever seen.
Congratulations, you just discovered how internet worked in the 20th century. Don't you think it was actually pretty neat, and shouldn't have been killed off?
>>
>Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDb's social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDb's editors and one another. IMDb's Facebook page and official Twitter account have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat, Pinterest, YouTube, and Tumblr.

So that's it. They want to take a place for serious and in depth discussion of film and replace it with social media comments. And the dumbing down of social discourse continues.

of course it has consolidated, you jew.

actual, real internet discussion happened in the golden era of bulletin boards. shit was free too. now you cant find a fucking movie sample or a damn hi res texture without a jew site asking mooney for it. all of that was free before, and it was put up by generous people. now its always corporations trying to suck you out of money.

cant you see the orwellian nature of having ONE FUCKING SEARCH ENGINE? one that arbitrarily decides what you can look at?

I have no idea why the shitty IMDB boards shutting down feels like the end of the internet but it just does. Its like the entire BBS/Usenet/Message Board culture is dead pretty much with 4chan being the only thing close to it but /tv/ is FAAAAR worse than IMDB.

I just wish I could go back in time to the 80s and relive my life over and over until I die, be a doctor, be a lawyer, be a scientist, archaeologist, I really don't care about the future, its going to suck unless they somehow kick up VR somehow and make it cool, for a few years that will be amazing.

That just means it's going away soon. OKCupid had a forum as one of the main features while it was still a personality test site, and then first they relegated it to a small link on the bottom, then they removed the link but left the forum if you knew the URL, then they removed the forum (after 3-4 years of it being in limbo like that).

And it slowly morphed from a personality test site where you could find people with similar interests and read and comment on their ridiculously long and detailed profiles, to a barebones dating site with short profiles and emphasis on pictures, to a literal Tinder clone cell phone app.

This is a good example, the first thing that dies when a site like that goes down is the actual culture-related stuff - the stuff that's out of print, you can't get it anywhere else, fan-made stuff, stuff that was the result of years of autistic research or collection, and so on. I spent so much time in my teens on various boards on there, I remember when LOST was airing you'd be considered cool as fuck on that board if one of your theories came true, and when Heroes started we'd raid their board shitposting about their show ripping off ours

it was great, still remember all the things I learned about polar bears from autists trying to prove their theory about Atlantis was right

same here anon. There is no alternative. Can't post about it on /tv/ because the thread gets no replies and if it did it would be meaningless shitposting

You can't be serious, unless you're a teen. This happened a thousand times before, it's the history of internet, places go to shit, people move on. It's exactly how facebook got big, it was a decent thing with barely any innovation at all in the middle of a ton of garbage.

Hell, it happened right here with /v/.

I do this too, I used to make threads on /tv/ but they fizzled out in a few posts.

I used to post there in the early - mid 2000s.

I honestly could care less.

This might seem obscure, but did anyone used to read the BSG forums around ~2005-2007? There used to be this faggot that posted there all the time who always shit on the new BSG and said the old one (1979) was superior, always thought it was hilarious. I think he refused to watch the new one because he was so butthurt and he was constantly shitposting on the BSG forums.

Reddit. I really don't get why 4chan hates reddit so much on the face of it its' really not that bad. IMDB is much worse.

The quality and content of "news" has changed completely.

It's just opinion now, and politicized opinion at that. Countless times I used to scroll to the comment section where some autist would point out how the author got facts wrong or misrepresented the case somehow.

Since "news" is just opinion, they don't want to provide a forum where people can easily disprove their bullshit right below where they speak with an air of professionalism and authority. It'd be like having a dedicated space for your own hecklers.

So they shut it down.

There's no mystery to this other than how long they think they can stretch the authority and impact journalism used to have 20 years ago.
>>
>>79073140

>implying I don't already post on Reddit too
There's no replacement for the haven of contrarian shitposting that is /tv/ though, as shit as /tv/ is at times I still like posting here with anonymity so I can voice my shitty opinions with ease.

Honestly, I use Reddit a lot for tv-show specific subreddits, where there's actual discussion. For example, The Americans has really slow / short threads on this board, but there's a lot more active discussion on the Americans subreddit than here. The mainstream subreddits, like r/politics, r/pics, r/gaming, r/movies, etc. Once you unsubscribe from all the shitty subreddits and only subscribe to smaller communities, the overall quality of the site improves drastically.

>>
>>79073385

Well again different viewpoints. The chans have always had a core to them and even though they have a tidal action and pieces break off and others come to adhere and replace.

The core itself remains. But I can see why you wouldn't know that.

You know I'm pretty sure this just going to end up fueling other message boards that IMDb can't actually mod like whatever subreddits discuss movies. It doesn't treat the "problem", just displaces it.
But I guess it means at least it's not their problem anymore, no need to mod or to listen to everyone's whining.

That's just because they're obscure, little to do with the platform itself, and it allowed torrent culture to grow.

>>
>>79074240
>>That's just because they're obscure, little to do with the platform itself,
It has everything to do with the death of a platform though, since the lower 20% or so (by obscurity) stuff is lost each time, that's what I'm trying to get at.

I'm not saying the platform itself was particularly valuable, what was built upon it was.
