Just finished watching this. Holy fuck what a great movie. Bets I've seen in at least 5 years. Why, WHY can't Hollywood take more chances on great material like this. Why do fantastic movies like this get drowned out by superhero sequels and the latest reboot of a remake of a whatever?

You're happy and heartbroken at the end. Can;t wait to see what Villeneuve can do with Blade Runner.

We'll since the aliens in this movie was based on coffee stains and people playing "spiders" with their hands on a table. The invader evil aliens will be butts smacking against whoopee cushions. With the cushions being their means of communication.

You know what, my bad. I should have known posting a positive opinion of anything on this board would immediately be met with the cynicism of a kissless 15 year old basement dweller.

Admit it, you shed a tear at the end, so now you trash the movie because you think you might, just might, be a fag. And you are.

>>79052049

>>
>>79052080

The 3000 years thing was mentioned multiple times. Basically, the entire reason the aliens came to earth was to give humans their language as because they would need our help in the future.

We never find out what exactly they need help with because the movie was not about that.
>>
>>79052080
The "3000 years from now" scene is when Adams is brought onto the ship near the end of the movie. If you didn't have the right subs you missed it, since it's the ayy lmaos dialogue subtitled.

Let me tell you what's shit about this movie

>woah girl you're so smart, come with us to talk with aliens,
>uhhg no?
>we came in helicopters, what about now?
>okay take me there

>no space left for mystery or wonder, the film left no question other than "what happens in 3000 years latter?", which by the way it does not matter anyway, because the focus of the movies is not aliens it's about UGH CANCER IT'S SUCH A BITCH RIGHT?

>when you learn their language you learn how to see the future
>still, she was the only one with the visions

>that disgusting depression inducing filter, I dont give a fuck if you're actually payed for being a colorist, your job is as stupid as a millennial bitch using Instagram filter into a photo to make it look more deep or interesting, it's fucking horrible, I'm so fucking tired of this trend in photography, design and film

>that bullshit stupid climax, oh kill this bitch she's a traitor, typical american way of writing conflict

>HURRR DURRR HUMANS ARE EVIL, WE'RE SO FUKING ARROGANT WHITE GUILT WHITE GUILT etc.

the movie had great aesthetics and alien/spaceship design and conceptualization, to be honest the whole communication segment was pretty interesting and well executed, visuals and effects were okay, kinda glad they didn't went full capeshit with morbid senseless action

slightly better than that movie where keanu reeves is and ayylium/10, mediocre pretentious sci-fi
>>
>>79052348
Aliens don't have subtitles in real life.
>>
Arrival is good, but watch it a second and third time. It kind of starts to fall apart and you realize how clunky the third act becomes, both story wise, sci-fi wise and effects wise. Seems like they spent a lot of time on the first and second acts and then just shit out the last 30 minutes because they couldn't think of anything better.
>>
>>79049362
Can someone explain to me how they translated the circles? I feel like they went from seeing a couple of them straight into figuring them out in one too easy montage that didn't give me enough technical information. Or did I just miss something?

Why was an alien in her bedroom? Did the aliens live among the humans in the future, and was she fucking one of them? Reminded me of that scene from the spider invasion movie Dennis made.
>>
>>79052397
>write "human" while gesturing that they are human
>assume what the aliens wrote was the word for what they call their race
>write each persons name and gesture to show the difference between human race and specific names

>do this for basic words and concepts until you notice patterns in their language

>>
>>79052507
Maybe I'm just not very good at languages, but that still seems far too under explained. I mean fuck, with every circle they had a pretty wide range of what that shit meant. I wanted more explanation rather than just a montage.

I assumed that the bomb the soldier put into the ship somehow put that alien into death process. the alien would have known that was happening since they dont experience time linearly but alien didnt do anything to stop it from happening.

chinese general showing her his personal number in the future and saying "for some reason I feel like I have to show you this."

the way she delivered the line "he said i made the wrong choice" when she explains why renner left her came off like he thought there was free will but she knew they didnt. idk there isnt any 100% evidence I suppose
>>
>>79052745
>>79052641
The whole point of the movie is the deterministic nature of time. Like the past and future will always be the same and cannot be changed
>Except when the aliens need help in 3000 years so they prep earth, or when she needs to learn Chinese magically

>>
>>79053487
I'm not that guy but I missed that too. Because the thing seemed suched a closed case. Divorced husband, dead child, and then the movie starts.

Also she says something like "I'm a linguist but bad at communication" which I thought was referring to the divorce
>>
>>79053487
it was ambiguous
>>
>>79053567
I agree, it could be before or after the main story and both would fit.

Also she gets like flashbacks during the movie, but that are flashforwards then? It seemed more like reliving a memory than seeing the future
>>
>>79053591
I just hope you're pretending to be retarded
>>
>>79053639
No I think it is indeed ambiguous. Especially because the opening scene is so irrelevant to the rest of the movie. "OK this woman is divorced and lost a child so she has some deep going grief. Movie starts." She even talks about it in past tense, and it all happens long before we are introduced to the non linear time concepts

Was literally the dumbest shit I've seen in a long time.

She doomed her daughter when she could have easily avoided the disease. She could have waited a few months to try for a baby, she could have had that baby with literally any other person on the planet, she could have adopted, she could have chosen not to have a kid that is destined to die at 15. What kind of monster knowingly dooms their children like this character, like literally what the fuck.

Also the aliens were probably a bunch of teenagers that stole moms car and knew in 3000 years they have a homework assignment that had to do with humans so they laid the groundwork early so they could get A's.
>>
>>79052358
Of course you're a fucking /pol/tard
>>
>>79054063
>she could have had that baby with literally any other person

No, she could not. Had she had a baby with any other person or at another time it would not have been Hannah.

>she could have chosen not to have a kid that is destined to die at 15. What kind of monster knowingly dooms their children like this character, like literally what the fuck.

Louise over the course of the movie got connected to her unborn child and figured 15 years of existence is better than no existence at all.

Just because a character did not act exactly like you would does not make it bad.
>>
>>79053124
Why do you guys insist in being stupid?
The aliens did not CAME BACK BECAUSE, they ALWAYS were on the Earth in their "past".
It's exactly the same thing of when Adams averted an international crisis
>>
>>79054174
this time fuckery just doesn't work. What if she did decide not to have a baby or changed something enough that she didn't have hannah. Welp, future just got bamboozled because it gave her everything she needed.

Seriously the logic is stupid.
>>
>>79054035
Oh I missed that
>>
>>79054279
It is though. I like the deterministic concept of time they toy with, but then they crap all over it when the plot needs it.
>>

SHE COULDNT CHOOSE TO NOT HAVE HER DAUGHTER, THE FUTURE DOES NOT EXIST, IT'S JUST A CONCEPT, IT'S A CLOSE LOOP, EVERYTHING IT'S PREDETERMINED, ABBOTT COULDNT AVOID IS DEATH, THE ALIENS COULDNT NOT CHANGE THE FUTURE BY GOING BACK 3000 YRS TO EARTH, THEY ALWAYS SAVED THEMSELVES BECAUSE THEU WERE ALWAYS ON EARTH 3000 YRS PRIOR.

IT'S SO SIMPLE. FUCK

The aliens already had a non linear understanding of time, they knew how the humans would figure things out so they have them the right symbols at the right time. It's a stable time loop transfer of information. Same thing happens with Amy Adams calling the Chinese general with a number she pulled out of her ass (or so it seemed to the other characters).

Friend of mine told me that she didn't perceive time as a linear sequence of facts but in a different alien way. From what I understood she didn't perceive future or the past or the present, everything was a mix of these to her.
She could not not have had the child because even with this change of perception she still is the same person she was before, so she would be doomed by causation to still have that child because the same person, put in the same situation would do the same thing. Now, I disagree with him but this is a rough explanation of why she had it. I disagreed with him because to me a change of perception so heavy would inevitably alter the relationship between the part of her that is her conscious self and the rest of her person, so in doing that it would alter the relationship she has with the outside world and thus she would be able to change and act in another way. Maybe she didn't believe she had a choice, or as some other anon pointed out "Some existence is better than no existence" is what she believed and decided to give her hypothetical future child 12 years of life. I guess.

tldr she had the baby because despite the fact that she could perceive time in a different way (seeing the future is a reductive way to put it)

I just watched this today and really enjoyed it except for the last 20 or so minutes: suddenly she can time travel wtf? Also why not just wear a condom and have practically the same baby a month later but without whatever desease she had?
I hope they do a reboot soon.

Those are the most retarded aliens I have ever seen.
I would have rather some crappy cgi instead of an obviously upside down hand

In early script they need humans to get out of their "future is predetermined" trap. Aliens see end of their race and they don't like that future. But they can't change it. Humans can't see their future and have freedom of will here. Soldier kills one of aliens and their leave because aliens didn't see that coming and now they know that future can be changed.
