For some reason, people have hard-on for live adaptations although the story already exists in its best form. It makes my head spin when I hear that people want a live-action Akira when the anime itself is a work of art and the live-action film will only tarnish the original. In both versions Light gets shot by Matsuda and he starts talking about how Light killed his own father etc.
In the Anime Mikami stabs himself and acts as a diversion for Light to walk away and we hear a monologue of Ryuk that he is going to take Light's life now like he promised, since he didn't want to wait until he dies in prison.
In the Manga Light starts to lose his mind and uses his last strength to move himself forward with his arms until he is right in front of Ryuk.
And then he gets the idea: Ask Ryuk to kill them all and safe him.
Ryuk smiles and seem to agree to the deal.
Light thinks he is safe until Ryuk reveals that he actually wrote Light's name in his Death Note.
Everything in this scene makes a much better ending.
The anime butchered it.

That is due to the fact that was just explained later in the 13th volume that gives background informations such as L's real name, it is not part of the main story.
The main story ends a few years later after what happened in the warehouse with Matsuda explaining a theory of how Mikami could get tricked by Near. This theory includes that Near wrote Mikami's name in the Death Note, as a matter of fact: Mikami died 10 days after the warehouse incident.
The last page is a cult of people with candles praying that their god kira will return.
