What is his masterpiece?
Blue Velvet
>>79032621
I think it's Blue Velvet. Lost Highway's a close second. I have a feeling Lynch himself would say it's Inland Empire.
his meme hair
Eraserhead, Mulholland drive or inland empire
Or all of them
Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet. Most of his shit is aimless and grotesque nonsense.

Inland Empire

Eraserhead. Took him nearly 6 years to make, and deals with his own fears of being a father.

yo I watched that shit and I don't think i could have enjoyed it unless I was slightly drunk and watching it in an actual theatre
and I love Lynch's stuff that I've seen

His hairstyles and Fire Walk With Me.
wild at heart if you're a normie but try to be patrician so you don't want to name the obvious ones but then you look like an idiot cause it's dune-tier
Nothing he has done has come close to the quality of Blue Velvet.
Things like elephant man are too straight laced and shit like inlnand empire is far too off the wall and just lynch fucking around with a digital camera
But blue velvet has a lot of top lynchisms while being a wonderful and cohesive film.

I've seen Lynch in an interview say he despised Dune and regretted ever making it, and it's the only thing he feels that way about.
But I think that's more because he has a weird sense of integrity where he wants everything to be Blue Velvet/Rabbits/etc. tier
Mullholand drive. His most emotional and tragick one
>we never got a David Lynch directed Return of the Jedi.
Worst timeline. Still rather sweet that Lynch never has a bad word to say about Lucas.

All of his movies are interesting except maybe Dune. Inland Empire is the only one of his movies that I really dislike though. It's odd, I really enjoyed watching it, but got so fucking frustrated with it afterwards.
>>79033619
Hipsters have never even heard of The Straight Story. They're very surface level, most would stop at Twin Peaks since that's what's hip maybe Eraserhead since that's well known.

Not true at all. Plebs like you who say it's not really a Lynch film have no firm understand of the movie itself. Watch it again or read an analysis.

Just because its not a typical lynch movie doesnt make it forgettable.it doesnt need muh dream sequence to be a masterpiece

If you can't be bothered to take 5 minutes to explain/defend your opinion, I'm not going to spend 2 hours re-watching it. Again, it's a fine movie, I'm not trashing it, but when you pick something so low-key and unambitious as Lynch's "masterpiece" it really just seems like you're trying to make yourself feel special.

This is a joke right? MD is one of his easiest to get. The story and the dream are pretty straight forward. All the little connections and things were just so he could include the footage from the failed pilot. Which I liked, it's not a bad movie, it's just not as complex as so many seem to think. Lost Highway had all those little things that actually lended to explaining the plot, and Inland Empire is a different beast all together. Which to answer OP's question is what I'd say is his masterpiece. It's overwhelming and works moreso on a subconscious level than any of his other films. If any of his movies were to be "not understood" and still likes as some people do with his films, it would be this one. I never understood that though and I see it as a look at consciousness and death/afterlife.
>>79041002
I liked MD well enough, not my favorite Lynch movie but good.
But I really hate how every time someone says something critical about it some asshole like the anon you replied to comes out like "oh just didn't get it". As if the movie's plot/subject matter is the only thing of relevance.
I didn't really "get" Lost Highway but I thought it was very good, maybe even better than MD, which I agree is not that hard to follow.
>>79041150
>he didn't get Lost Highway
>>79034548
It's a meme you dip
>>79041150
Lost Highway had me puzzled for a long time. It's not too difficult to see that it's about a man that killed his wife and created an alternate reality in his head because he couldn't come to terms with it. What was hard for me was explaining every detail because while some people can write it off as tone, I felt like Lynch had a purpose for everything, as well as a consistent explanation. I believe that the mystery man exists in the man's head, not as some devil, but as an embodiment of truth. The whole movie is the man's memory of the events that happened, now influenced by both his denial of what he did and the truth brought by the mm. The two pasts collide and eventually he realizes and comes to terms with what he did. My thoughts are that since the tapes were sent by the mystery man, they never existed and therefor neither did the detectives and any part of the film that involved them. Its been a while, so I may be missing some, and there's a lot to go into explaining why things in the alternate personality were the way they were, but overall I think he finally sees his actual self kill Dick and rides away on the "highway" of his consciousness, finally being electrocuted for his crimes. This death and his transformation in the cell are the only things I think that we see happen as they occur. Everything else is through the lense of his altered memories

Maybe if by TP you mean only the episodes he personally directed. As a whole, lol no.
Season 3 is going to be incredible right /tv/? David lynch is about the only guy out there I would trust to revisit their old work and understand how to do it correctly in modern day. Still can't shake past experiences with how much stuff has been ruined with needless follow ups tho.
FWWM > Mulholland Drive > Twin Peaks > Wild at Heart > Lost Highway > The Straight Story > Blue Velvet > The Elephant Man > Eraserhead > Dune
I have been putting off watching Inland Empire because then I won't have anymore new Lynch to watch until May.

But it ends the same way that it begins. So maybe he regains the shocking memory of what he did, but then starts burying it again and creates the hallucinatory reality again. Like it's a cycle of remembering and then forcing himself to forget. But yeah otherwise yeah great theory, I'd never have thought of that.

Man Twin Peaks though season 1 and half of season 2 was so orgasmic, but now I'm not sure what to think. Cooper's and Briggs story are pretty interesting for the moment but the other sub plots with Nadine and James, I dunno, also shouldn't Edd be worried about were James is?

Watch Snake Eyes. It's all Cage, all the time, and always overacting.
The only part when he's required to show some depth is near the end, when he gets beaten up. And it's so embarrassing the entire film falls apart. All of the build-up to that scene is fucking wasted because Cage completely fluffs it.

That screenplay really sucked period. The opening tracking shot and the chase through the casino are the only reasons to watch. And I typically don't like show-off steadicam shots, but DePalma is so good at them. A third of the 12 minute scene is just Cage reacting to things you can't see, it's totally subverts expectations for shots that are usually so excessive.
