That's the point, George is a terrible director.
Kids performances in movies are a great tool for showing the director's ability because a kid isn't completely self-aware of it's performance, the director is entirely in charge of it.

I agree it's not fair to blame the kid, Lucas cast him after all.

I've heard an interview where he said he tried to explain to George that the Phantom Menace needed a human character like Han Solo who could bring the movie down to earth with a sarcastic comment whenever it gets too up-it's-own-ass with mysticism.

I'm with him on Jake Lloyd though. That poor fucking kid. I won't say he was a good child actor but George is the one that chose him out of all the kids that auditioned.

He's the only guy allowed to say George Lucas ruined my childhood.
